Dear United States of America,
It is with great joy that I pen down this missive to you, which I hope it finds you enjoying of good wealth health (please, do pardon my temporarily lack of sensibility; I am quite aware of the economic & financial constraints you are experiencing right now… and if there is something that I can do for you, and yours, please do not hesitate to request for our aid – times are harsh on everybody, but what are friends for?).
I have been receiving news about the upcoming Presidential elections there: you must be tremendously excited about it! I also learned that for the very first time you are having a black candidate…oops; pardon my European nature once again; I meant Afro-American candidate (although I do not understand why you insist on designating Black people nés [1] in your country as Afro…darling, they are not African, they don’t even behave like Africans! *Sigh* it seems to me that you need to stop labelling people according to the melanin levels in their skin : it is so tiresome!)…anyway, I must say that this represents a huge social advance: I am so proud of you, dear!
It was not too long time ago (more or less 40 years, I believe) when you experienced serious Human Rights issues, when you insisted that only Caucasians were competent enough to participate in the designs of the nation; that Black people served only to serve...but let’s not linger on your stark past, you repented and now you are trying to do the right thing – well done *wink*!
Last week, I had tea with Angela Dorothea and she told me about a political lady (although this was not exactly the title she used when referring to her) from Alaska, of whom she spoke harshly: it seems like she is a bit of a half wit (the interviews she gives are the latest laughing stock here in Europe, for she doesn’t seem to understand the questions asked to her, and when she proposes herself to reply any it is never quite related to the subject at hand; she possesses little culture, poor thing; and the latest gaffe is her lack of notion of what the term “pre-conditions” means); there are rumours that she is involved in several scandals (I even found an interesting blog whose author took the time to make a summary of her public derailment); she defends that creationism should be taught in schools; and she is quite adverse to scientific progress...tell me, is this true? Is it possible to have such a political candidate in your universe?
You do know how much I admire you, darling! Your life style has contaminated the whole world - over consumerism, leasing, credit cards debt; you turned getting fat into an International Fashion Show – Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut; you put information on the hands on the entire world – Microsoft, Google, Internet Explorer, Chrome, iPhone.
Before leaving, I’d like to tell you to stand proud, for despite all your flaws you are still the example of a true democracy and the world’s number one potency [but if you don’t vote properly; on November 4; you will put in risk your hegemony]!

It is amazing how you carried that thru so well in one sentence! Well the US may not ask for your help but Canada would be happy if you would buy some oil, uranium and Canadian dollars! Our economy will actually weather the storm comparatively well as we have a low national debt (thanks Preston Manning) with no deficit spending, and our banking system is excellent (one of the very best). However we do like to sell our resources so it would be nice if everybody else had some money to buy things. A rise in fuel costs would be great!!!

As I don’t think of labelling myself by my race or family roots it is hard for me to relate to labelling myself with race. I would hope people are more interested in my ideas and content of my character than my white skin color….
What I find very interesting is the many people that are choosing to vote for Obama because he is black not because of his ideas (I find this is true of many white and black people, African Americans if somebody prefers). For example recently a Howard Stern media crew went into Harlem and interviewed black people they presented the various policy presentations from the election but they switched who they were from, they said McCain’s ideas were Obama’s and vice versa yet ALL of the people they interviewed said Obama’s ideas were best but in fact they were actually McCain’s ideas!! They also supported Obama’s choice of Palin as VP!!!! One fellow was also mixed up the other way around! LOL Should people vote based upon race or gender? I would say no.

That was no question a sad time in US history (to put it very mildly)….I personally know white people in the US that are voting for Obama because they feel guilty about this history of their nation…Yet to vote for somebody because they are black is to me just as bad as voting for somebody because they are white…Personally over the course of the 3 past Canadian federal elections I have voted for an East Indian Canadian female not because of her race or gender but because I felt she was the best qualified candidate…

What kind of tea? As in Angela Dorothea Merkel the German Chancellor? LOL Well Obama is going to have to wait on hold on the phone for a LONG time if as he says he upon winning the election the first thing he is going to do is phone the “president of Canada”!! LOL LOL Ottawa will have to run around trying to find a president! LOL But we do have a Prime Minister! It must be all that foreign experience he has with the number 1 US trading partner! LOL
Palin has her issues but you are mischaracterizing her position on creationism in schools, she said she thought creation would be a healthy conversation for kids to have at school along side evolution but she never moved to change this in Alaska and never said it should be part of the science classes. Since evolution cannot explain the start of life that area is an interesting and helpful area to explore in school…
As for the scientific progress I am not sure where that has come from she did champion a state of the art pipeline from Alaska into Canada the largest most sophisticated project in North American history with the largest company in the world in this field (a Canadian company) that will use innovative technology for the project…She is pro-life with a Down Syndrome child and some people have said she must be against science for choosing to give birth to such a child but I see her in a positive light in this area because of such a choice…

You know I really like your thoughts, ideas and reflection on things and this was no exception. Coming from Norway, I find the American campaign a bit strange. So much focus on the candidates, so you can's see or hear or understand their politic point of view.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing is how they blur the parties politic statements, as if Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) change from election to election.
To me its kind of fragmented and very 'at this very day' kind of politic and less continuenty.

I find it sad, really! What kind of a reason is that to vote for a candidate?
Robert Mugabe convinced the Zimbabweans that he was the best leader for Zimbabwe because he was black and was going to chase the white thieves off their country, and look where it is now *nodding*!

How sad is that? But that reminds me of the Portuguese people...whenever we go to elections, people here vote for the candidate they sympathise the most (or for the candidate belonging to X or Y party), they don't vote for the best candidate the country needs at the time.

When will you ever forgive (and specially forget) that innocent gaffe? Of course, if we are going to talk about real political gaffes let's refer to Senator McCain's "How can we bring pressure on the Government of Somalia?" when he meant Sudan (but since Somalia is also a delicate political issue, you can certainly imagine the serious diplomatic implications of this gaffe)...

LS, she did say in 2006 (in a gubernatorial debate) that she had no objection to both evolutionism and creationism being taught in school; and then, after it raised a commotion she came back to clarify "I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum" but only after it raised a slight preocupation that she'd want to bring "religion" into the school system.

I suppose you didn't watch her policy speech last week, did you? She said, "You've heard about some of these pet projects they really don't make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not,"
I assume she hasn't bothered to do some research on fruit fly studies (those silly-money-sucking-scientists): this type of fly is used as models for aging, neural disease, cancer, it helped identifying the genes that are affected by prescribed drugs (that cause birth defects) etc...
Not to mention her being against stem-cell research "But here again, with a Pro-life position, and its interesting that so many questions revolve around this centeredness I have of respecting life and the potential of every human life, but no, stem-cell research would ultimately end in destruction of life. I couldn’t support (it)."

I wonder what will she say, if one day science discovers a way to "fix" the Down syndrome....
Now, I don't defend that science answers all the questions, cause it doesn't; but it can't be denied the huge benefits it brought to the whole world.

Thank you, dear *bowing*! Yes, the media manipulates these elections in a very odd way: it seems like a circus, doesn't it? As if the elections were some sort of entertainment *nodding*...
In this sense Europeans cover their elections in a more serious way (and do not get lost in silly details)!

True; the media makes it seem like there isn't any consistency in partisan platform; but it isn't so.

LOL I can imagine! Great exports if I may add (in a sense of how successful they were in penetrating the world market)!

You are so correct about the media. They have turned this entire thing into a joke.
I simply don't listen to them. I listen to my inner being and start from there.
My inner being keeps saying O'bama...O'bama...O'bama!!!!
And to all of your other commentators please know that we average Americans are working very hard to bring about change.
But it is an uphill battle for us too.
But my new phrase is "Give me liberty or give me death." Oh I wish I knew which one of our great founding fathers said that. But, I can't remember at this moment.
But I am living it and will continue to live it from this point forward.
If it takes a revolution then perhaps that too may happen.
But, my country has been stolen from me by wealthy, greedy, war mongering thieves. And I want it back!

It was Patrick Henry that is attributed with the quote “What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
I knew it was him that you were quoting but Googled to get more of the speech….I knew there was an “Almighty God” part to the speech…
I’m Canadian and we have noted that one of the things planned to change is NAFTA….Obama said the first things he was going to do when elected was phone the president of Canada to “renegotiate”….of course we have a Prime Minister not a president but it is probably unfair of us to expect him to know this about the number 1 trading partner of the US…..is capitalism one of the things panned for change?
By the way I don’t support either McCain or Obama not that it matters since I can’t vote…
As a Canadian I want to thank you for supporting us in our mission in Afghanistan…liberty has a nice ring to it…

ReplyDeleteWell at least it's almost over,it's Nov 4....of this year right? I'm tired of all the mud slinging and down right nasty comments which is just par for the course in politics.
I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if the US election process didn't seem to go on forever,lol. So in the end I hope they get who they want and the new couple whoever they are have some kind of long term space program and allocate NASA the funds they need to get to the Moon, then Mars.

I must correct something that you said. It is not America that insists that the blacks be called "African Americans", but the blacks themselves. I personally don't call them "African American" because I don't call myself Eurasian American, nor do I call my Puerto Rican father in law "Latino American". We are all just Americans. I am white, they are black...it's just a color. I'm fine with them celebrating their heritage, but by defining themselves as "African American", they are furthering the stereotyping and segregation. They should refer to themselves as simply Americans.

I am not well versed in economics but I do know this one thing about our agreement with Canada.
As it stands right now it is completely one sided in favor of your country.
Example: My husband is a truck driver. He is only allowed by your country to deliver a load in and pick up one load and then come back to the U.S.
Canadian drivers spend weeks and yes even months down here in the U.S. hauling loads all over our country. Thus taking away loads from American drivers.
America does not maintain or adhere to NAFTA as your government does. We do not make your drivers leave our country after just one load.
But Canada protects their drivers by forcing American drivers to drop off...pick up and leave.
Perhaps this is an area where the trade agreement is indeed one sided in favor of your country.
Therefore, if you guys are going to be so picky and tight about the rules, then perhaps we should also.
After all, what's good for the goose is also good for the gander.
America has been devastated economically by not enforcing NAFTA properly.
While many countries including Canada have gained a great deal from it.
So in my humble opinion it is time to take a fresh approach, have a new look around, and make some changes.
We are on the same continent and it is imperative for all that we remain friends.
But to be a good friend then we must share equally. And that is not taking place currently.
So renegotiation seems the only reasonable option to me. Perhaps Canada will be more willing to be freer with her trading if America starts to enforce NAFTA correctly.
As stated previously I only know how the current agreement has effected the American trucking industry. But, I also know by meeting and talking to many Canadian drivers that they are making a killing as the agreement stands now.
I think all things should be tit for tat....so open your doors more to our drivers and perhaps we won't close ours to your drivers.
Well that should be enough to keep this running for a while.
I take nothing personally. This is merely a discussion and a good debate.
LS, we may disagree but that's what a Democracy is all about. We can disagree and still be friends.

The white house is very sensitive you know and they don't take too kindly to a hey rube. You cannot jeopardize your bid for the white house, it is still within your reach.
You must be more like a puppet where you leave enough room for someone else's hand (agenda) to control your speech and physical movements. Once you get into the white house, it is a different thing. You can raise the roof. You can do what you want and join a long line of politicians with personal agendas. Do you know that the CIA already has a file on you? Not to worry, I have sent it to the shredder. It's a lot of paperwork.
But until we get in there, we can't rewire the system. America likes to think of itself as being progressive and on the cutting edge of social reform. While I understand what you mean by designating all black people as African-Americans, Mr. Obama IS African-American. His father is from Kenya.
I agree that we use too many labels. We have labels for everything. Labels, labels, labels. They are meaningless, but they are what we use to signify our own lack of understanding. Our whole world is based on color. America, especially loves it's colors.
A brief summation: we have the red, white and blue; the power of the red states, the blue states, the white states and of course politician only care about the black states when they are running.
We still have a seriously deep racial divide that seems to keep getting wider. What's black and white and red all over - America. The racial lines have always been drawn and many will tell you that they are not there, but they are. We even have two types of water - Whitewater or Blackwater?
America has always been a water cooler subject, even a laughing stock, it's part of our "allure." We are like a tabloid headline that you can't get out of your mind. We are the rebellious stepchild that has lost his way. The party attendee intoxicated with our own arrogance; the one with the lampshade on our head at the end of the evening. We are used to it.
That Alsakan governor, well she's just eye candy for the GOP. She is really an actress auditioning for a part on America's Next Top Politician. She is in the top 5. She spent $150,000 on a wardrobe and she wears nice shoes and specs. When Tina Fey retires from Saturday Night Live, Ms. Palin will take Tina' place.
It is not that she is a half wit, it's just that "charming" accent. Much like people from the South are thought of as a certain way because of their accent.
For some reason, this media darling has America cowering in fear. I assure you that she is just an actress, no need to fear. She is just following a script like all politicians.

I will preface my comment by telling you I do not support McCain or Obama…
I have read the NAFTA agreement (and the prior agreement the Free Trade Agreement FTA) and am well versed in this area. I can tell you that NAFTA is very good for both countries; it is far superior to the way the European Union works by contrast.
Both the US and Canada have grown many jobs into the millions each because of this deal, it has also grown wealth in both countries. It has unquestionably been a net positive for both the US and Canada, and we are your major trading partner for example supplying you with more oil than Saudi we are your number one supplier by far in that regard. Plus it is also good for Mexico although because of the corruption and popular animosity towards capital growth they have not been able to grow as they should….
However as you said NAFTA is not perfect for example the Softwood Lumber Agreement has been contentious as some US lumber companies have tied us up in legalities for many years because we are more efficient and cost effective (we also pay our workers more partially because we have much higher taxes so the government gets a larger slice of the pie) AND because they are attacking other US companies that export from here to the US…NAFTA boards have now repeatedly 6+ times founds the US in violation of the agreement…of course this means higher housing costs in the US because our products are as good or better but those savings are not being allowed to be passed along to the US consumers…this has cost Canada billions of dollars (and hit my province of British Columbia hard) yet overall it is still a very good deal as there really are relatively few problems…

The interesting thing about the Ohio auto comment is that Ontario is also blaming NAFTA for their auto issues but both sides of the boarder are suffering because the North American auto manufacturers are building lousy cars.
The phrase “Use the hammer of a potential opt out as leverage…” is very interesting for a guy that says he is going to fix the US reputation abroad…(threatening to cancel is not renegotiations) If this is how he is going to deal with the US’s closest partner what will they offer to everybody else? By the way our environment standards are higher than most of the US…If the deal is cancelled by the US the advantages provided to you thru it in regards to oil and the huge amounts of electricity we sell you will also be renegotiated and many Canadians to the left will then want to use those as a hammer..
The present Canadian government which is a minority Conservative government actually wanted to change Canadian law so that the situation you are speaking of with truckers would no longer be an issue but as a minority the Liberal and New Democratic Party oppositions combined to not allow this to happen.
We just had our own election here in Canada and the New Democrat Party (NDP) which have a platform very similar to Obama came in fourth actually behind a Quebec separatist party…The NDP are also the ones wanting out of NAFTA so they can “hurt the US” (but they are a small minority party)…With Obama the US is moving more to the left than even Canada is willing to go…Very interesting..
NAFTA is not the problem with the US economy if it was not for NAFTA the US would have been hit hard long ago…the reason the US is having problems is because both the Democrats and the Republicans have made a mess of things over the past 16 years under Clinton and Bush and under a Congress held by BOTH parties. Both sides in the US have done a very bad job and frankly neither party deserves the White House or Congress.
As for change…change it is a nice slogan…it is ephemeral and can be negative if it is bad change. I have read Obama material, I have watched all of the debates, I follow the media closely and I still see no great innovative vision that can help pull the US out of the current situation…Not from Obama or McCain…

ReplyDeleteYou see, our (America's) primary goal right now is to reenact the Great Depression. So far we have had a credit bubble pop while a Republican administration was in place - just like 1929. It seems that we are headed to a long period or single party control of the various institutions of government: academia, the media, courts, congress, white house ... like the 1930's. The two things missing are higher taxes and a repeat of the Smoot-Hawley trade protection act.
Hence, renegotiating the NAFTA agreement is a key aspect of our current nostalgia for the 1930's. It really is mandatory! We must do it, whether it makes economic sense or not! While we are at it, we might even be able to emulate the culture wars that Spain experienced during the 30's. Hope! Change! Oprah!

The US economic situation is almost entirely made in the USA. The US government debt is stratospheric never mind corporate or personal debt (of course state and municipal debt is also huge factor).
I can’t imagine how horrible it must be to have been a good steward of personal money and purchased a home and worked diligently over the years to pay it off and then have your hard earned cash in the hands of the government used to bail out those who have been cavalier with their money….the fox guarding the hens…
I would say…caveat emptor…with money and this election…
Question: Would you say that it would be best that if Obama gets in that the Congress not be owned by the Dems or if McCain gets in it is best owned by the Dems?

LS, what is best is hard to say. We could have a split Democratic congress - Republican White House, but this will just leave a failing, unreformed Republican party because McCain isn't part of America's center-right mainstream. He is the Republican's candidate because the MSM painted him as a man of principle. He calls himself a maverick. It is probably more accurate just to say that he is a loose cannon.

Mel, I know what you mean. Unfortunately hating is a civil liberty that needs to be rescinded. It has no redeeming value. It is a soulless act. Regarding hate, I thought y'all might like to consider a related formal study which is reported on here. Every group has its psychos, but in general, people who are happy aren't consumed by hate, and people who are angry are more likely to be afflicted by hate.

The assassination plots against Bush were not designed because of the colour of his skin. That is what Alexys was trying to get at.

No, it is not good at all to have angry people governing. The being governing any nation should be rich in intellectual activity (i.e. he should think more than he feels), for serving the people requires mental strength, judgement, reasoning and the ability to see all citizens as equals (and if one is angry, one can't think properly and won't consider every citizen to be equal - this would lead to favouritism, unjust law making, corruption etc).

We can't repossess (as you say) freedom of speech, it is in the "call to action" in the hate speech that we must act. ReplyDeleteIn response to your comment and explanation, not to worry, I am a big boy and can take a punch as well as the next guy. Believe it or not, I’ve even been knocked out once or twice during my short life. So fire away when ever you get the urge.
I have lived in America for a long time, and many changes to this country have occurred during my lifetime. Not many of them have been for the better. Oh, it is true that we have a great standard of living. We have good healthcare plans, and we enjoy an educational system that ensures that a major portion of our population has access to economic opportunity. Of course, that is not to say that we couldn’t use a great deal of improvement. That goes without saying for any society that I am familiar with.
As you know, Americans think of their country as the big melting pot. This is what we have been told since early childhood. We have more diversity now than anytime in our history. Indeed, our borders are over run with immigrants. By the way “immigrant” is a title that I seriously question. It seems to me that we have millions of people from all over the world who think of themselves not as true Americans, but simply as someone else who happens to live in America. They are first in line for free services and other goodies that this great and generous country had to offer., but the they have the audacity not to salute our flag, honor our holidays, or revere our fallen heroes. In fact, they hate this country and its people, and pine away their months and years hoping and praying to save enough money to make it back to the so-called “old” country, wherever on God’s earth that might be. Maybe you could please tell me where the old country is. Anyway, I wish them God speed in this effort.
America is a capitalist democracy - not only in theory, but in practice. I wouldn’t want it any other way. All Americans have the constitutional right to make a living and keep whatever money the government doesn’t tax. We also have the right to visit the polls every election and vote for the candidate of our choice without fear of reprisal. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the two party system as we have always known it has morphed into a strange monster. I’ll give you that. Apparently, it is no longer about Republicans or Democrats. Instead, it is more about reactionaries versus the self righteous. There is no middle ground. If you stand for capitalism, then you are against the little people. If you oppose illegal immigration, then you are somehow against the right of people to seek a better life. If you condone abortion, you are a murderer! If you support cloning research, or stem cell research, then you have no moral compass. If you believe in evolution, then you are godless. If you are white, then you are automatically a bigot. If you vote for a non-black man, then you are racist. If you oppose a female candidate, then you are gender biased. If you oppose gay marriage, then you are guilty of a hate crime. Basically, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Please pardon the old worn out phrase. But there’s no middle ground, and you cannot possibly be working for the good of society unless you join one side or the other. Which means that you lose either way. And, of course, the all mighty media is the self appointed judge and jury of all things. You are nothing unless the media defines you. They will tell you what is right or wrong - good or bad. Balanced and objective, of course. That’s how high the media views itself. So, pardon me Max. But when an outsider feels the over powering need to point out America’s faults and misgivings and other shortcomings, please forgive me for being just a little miffed. But, hey, like I said, I can take a punch. The question I have, however, dear friend, is can you say the same?

ReplyDeleteI fully agree that Americans need a period of introspection and major attitude-adjustment. We have here a reliance on illusions of wealth and piety, while we live on credit and ask forgiveness for our bad deeds while we continue to promote our own comfort at the expense of the greater good. There is much goodness to be found in America, but as a culture, we need to mature and re-visit our collective humanity without the armor of divisive labels and exclusive affiliations.
I fully endorse Barack Obama because he displays authority over himself, and an authenticity, intellect, and dedication to purpose rarely seen in politicians in this age (at least in America.)
To me he is not just another politician. He is instead a LEADER, full of purpose, insight, knowledge, and conviction. I am continually impressed by his "cool" in the face of adversity, and his logical and rational thinking ability.
In my opinion, America needs a true leader like Barack Obama, more than HE needs to be President!
I wish him all the luck!
