If only I had a crystal-ball to foresee the future…
But since I don’t, I will have to rely on what my vision captures, add a zest of optimism and there we have it: a nice forecast.
Forecasts are practically a wish. So here’s my wish-list for 2011:
- People will have a broader understanding about the meaning of emigration and immigration [Emigrants must comprehend that migrating to another country signifies doing so legally; it means respecting the host country’s history, traditions, language; and remaining legal. Legal immigration is more than welcome. Illegal immigration poses a huge problem (which needs to be ethically tackled); however we shouldn’t allow bigots to use this issue as a means to spew their venom].
- The Western economy will start to grow. Jobs will be created (although not at a desirable rhythm yet). The middle class will start spending again and banks will wake up and re-start doing their real job (i.e. lending money against collaterals).
- Fareed Zakaria will pause the fear mongering and admit the truth: China is an investor, not a banker.
- Europe will tone down the ultra-nationalist rhetoric that threatens to re-emerge. Any form of persecution to Jews, Muslims, Gypsies, gays and any other minority group, will not be tolerated.
- Moderate Muslims will start to openly fight Islamists and show signs that they can win (since the rest of the world will support them). The Arab world fights for democracy and will begin to reform its society (i.e. separation between state and church; education for all; bestow civil rights upon women; yield to basic civil freedom & liberties and liberalise its market).
- Africa will wake up and smell the coffee. It’s time to ride the horse of development and for that to happen despotic governments must be brought down; democratic administrations must invest heavily on peace, health, education and infrastructures.
- Nations, worldwide, will finally realize that the world has changed and that reforms (on every level) are urgent. Old strategies, old tactics, the ancient way of thinking and doing things do not, and will not, work any longer.
Final forecast: 2011 is the year of change. So let’s be brave and embrace it!

ReplyDeleteOn immigration and illegal immigrants we are in agreement…I am also guessing we would feel the same about genuine refugees…hang on were you not the one saying that Mexicans should be able to illegally enter and stay in the US?
I would be pleased to see everybody’s economy grow…it would be nice to see the middle class saving more money and spending less…it would also be good for governments to do this…live within their means…We are fortunate in our part of the world to not have really felt the effects of the global economic collapse…

Moderate Muslims…it is interesting watching the death throes of Islamic Imperialism…Even if some icky genuine Muslims take control of Egypt et al the power of Islam is diminishing which is good…

Max, glad to see you are so optimistic, given all the pessimism. I accept that Africa will wake up and smell the coffee, but what about the cocoa? Still trying to digest what is happening in the Ivory Coast. I guess we have eleven more months to see how this plays out.

I would guess we'd be in agreement about genuine refugees if I knew your stance on it :)...

Although I agree that saving money for a rainy day is appropriate, I also think that if the middle class doesn't spend there will be an economic deceleration (so, having all of the middle class moderately spending would be good for the economy). True, my friend; after hearing that in some countries there is a 40-45% of unemployment rate I came to the conclusion that we are fortunate indeed...

LOL very good...indeed, I am intolerant towards intolerance lol. I agree with you: socialism doesn't work and it ruined the stability Europe was experiencing before socialists took over the Union.

LOL Oh no...you must not speak of "kona" when talking to a Portuguese speaking individual (for us, this word is very bad: it is worst slang for vagina).
Investing in peace may mean several things; however, in the African case, to invest in peace means to put the People's interests first (meaning that governments will not jump into military conflicts just because they wish to cling to power. They should negotiate everything while bearing their People's needs and safety in mind).

LOL that one was great ("what about the cocoa?")! You are right: they should smell the hot cocoa too.
The Ivory Coast situation is an embarrassment; but I am proud of the People though: they are fighting to oust the corrupt Laurent Gbagbo. And what is amazing is that, for the first time, many African countries are against him - a sign of change.
But let's see how the whole thing will play out indeed...

Hi Max perhaps you should see something about "prospective and foresight"... it will bring you unexpected answers... all the world is for castings so whats real?....anyway, i like optimistic views such as yours; and as for myself as default i'm an idealistic optimist that writes pessimism.....

LOL what's reality? Some would say we live an illusion, and others would say we live in an apparent reality.

Resilience is the key; however you are right: eventually rupture occurs (and many times it translates into avoidable pain & destruction).
