Remember Global Warming

Dear reader,

I hope this epistle finds you in good spirits.
When you hear about “global warming” what is your immediate thought? The environment, I assume. Today, however, I challenge you to go beyond that notion and dare, along with me, to behold other forms under which the globe is getting warmer.

Remember, the temperature is getting higher in the Muslim World, causing successive tempests that surely will lead to a dramatic political-climate change.

This is the case in countries like Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Syria (although still latently) and...Insha’Allah...the future state of Palestine; where people are set to fight for Democracy (that is, free speech, the right to information, the right to assemble, multi-partisanship, free elections, access to the same opportunities for everyone, market liberalisation etc). Although hopeful about these changes, I cannot hide my concern about Libya: when Tsunami-Gadhafi is out of control, bad weather may come from Algeria encouraging, thus, the storm of radicalism to sweep the nation. Disturbing picture.

Remember that things are getting warmer and warmer around the globe: anti-Semitism is on the rise again. First we had a drunk Mel Gibson spitting slurs against Jews; now we have an inebriate John Galliano vomiting anti-Semite verbiage against a Jewish couple, in Paris. I could mention  other public figures that take pleasure in uttering unsympathetic words against the Jewish People, however they are not worth my time. I know some voices, in Portugal, miss Salazar, however it is quite disappointing to see that many around the world miss Hitler.

Speaking of the Chosen People, I tried to avoid addressing a hot issue concerning a prominent European Jewish family, but I’m afraid their behaviour begs a quick comment (one, that only the Portuguese Minister of Culture dared to think but was shy to speak of):

Commendatore Joe Berardo (a Portuguese business man, known for being associated to the fore mentioned Jewish family) announced that “he” is going to build a cultural centre in Funchal (Madeira) intended to not only honour the Jewish culture but also to exhibit a Holocaust collection. So far, so good. But then, the commendatore goes on to disclose the location of the future centre honouring Judaism and the holocaust victims: a former Slaughter House

This insensitive and tacky idea leads me into thinking that perhaps the commedatore (thus, the respectable Jewish clan) is trying to design a tasteless syllogism of some sort...

Yes, remember: global topics are heating up and 2011 will be a fiery blogging year!

Respectfully,
Max Coutinho

  1. Hello my dear Maximus…it is me your dear reader….

Ohhh I see you changed the headline from a question to a statement…interesting.

We seem to have some trans-pollination of words and ideas with different twists between our articles…

Very fascinating take on the theme…Since becoming a follower of Jesus I have become a huge supporter of the Jewish people (just like every other Christian I personally know)…and since you also delve into the Muslim world here let me add an additional group…which may seem self serving…

I personally know people that have been discriminated against for being followers of Jesus and some are suggesting that this is also heating up. In fact it could be said that the only group that seems fair game to attack is Christians. They are openly mocked, ridiculed and suffer in many ways even unto death even TODAY on a constant basis. Here a mere few examples:

  2. Hi LSus :D!

"…it is me your dear reader…."

    LOL indeed you are *bowing*.

"Ohhh I see you changed the headline from a question to a statement…interesting."

I should apologise for my petulance, really; however the brush of creativity led me to commit this peccadillo *nodding*.

"We seem to have some trans-pollination of words and ideas with different twists between our articles…"

I know it does not come as a surprise to you...we both knew we would deflect a bit from the title...we look like a pair of journalists LOL.

"Very fascinating take on the theme…Since becoming a follower of Jesus I have become a huge supporter of the Jewish people (just like every other Christian I personally know)…and since you also delve into the Muslim world here let me add an additional group…which may seem self serving…"

Thank you *bowing*. You have? That is interesting, LS :).You are blessed, for I can't say that every Christian I know is a supporter of the Jewish People. And I know that in North America not every Christian is a supporter of the Jewish People, but it is not surprising. Speaking of it: have you heard of the clashes between Glenn Beck and the Jewish community? What does that guy want (I don't seem to comprehend him yet)?

"I personally know people that have been discriminated against for being followers of Jesus and some are suggesting that this is also heating up. Thanks for the links: indeed, it is shocking that Christians are still persecuted up to this day. Some would say that it is Karma at play (they persecuted in the past, and now they are the ones being persecuted), nevertheless it is always sad when humans are persecuted (be the reason what it may) *nodding*. May the Lord watch over its children!

It is NOT ok to attack the followers of any Belief System, period. It is not worthy of a true Homo Sapiens.

LSus, thank you so much for your most valuable input :D.

    Cheers

  3. I thought you meant "global warming" literally and I was about to say that as a Canadian freezing her ass, I'm pro global warming! :-D

A lot of things are going on right now, indeed. I don't know politics in the ME enough to comment on specifics but I'm glad things are moving. We must be careful about the aftermath though. A dictator gone is a victory, but if extremists come to replace him, it won't be much of a victory...

    LOL I so hear you!

"We must be careful about the aftermath though. A dictator gone is a victory, but if extremists come to replace him, it won't be much of a victory..."

You are so right. This is an important point you've brought up, indeed!

Zhu Zhu, thank you ever so much for a crucial comment :D!

  5. MAX - There is such hypocrisy in those who express anti-Semitic views. It seems to me that they hate themselves and need to externalize a scapegoat.

Many of them have Jewish friends whom they love yet they will cling to negative mindsets and utterances when asked. It's as if they need a little Mantra of Hate.

And how can so-called "Christians" hate Jewish people, when Jesus himself was not only Jewish, but a Jewish teacher, a Rabbi?

Yes, the climate is heating up in more ways than one. I hope and pray for all the Arab people living under repressive or abusive regimes. I hope they can find their way to Democracy without falling prey to extremists or mercenaries who will promise them freedom and then punish or execute them for any dissent.

And the whole world can see that Arab peoples are kept down by their own repressive governments, not by the existence of the small state of Israel.

  8. Hi Lynda :D!

"There is such hypocrisy in those who express anti-Semitic views. It seems to me that they hate themselves and need to externalize a scapegoat."

    I utterly agree with you.

"Many of them have Jewish friends whom they love yet they will cling to negative mindsets and utterances when asked. It's as if they need a little Mantra of Hate."

It is like having a black friend whom one loves and then throw racial slurs against black people...*nodding*...it's nonsensical.

"And how can so-called "Christians" hate Jewish people, when Jesus himself was not only Jewish, but a Jewish teacher, a Rabbi?"

Right..? That is an excellent question! I call those ignorant pseudo-Christians.
Indeed, Jesus was a Rabbi - since he was most knowlegeable about the Torah (to which he abided). But go and explain that to some people...

"Yes, the climate is heating up in more ways than one. I hope and pray for all the Arab people living under repressive or abusive regimes. I hope they can find their way to Democracy without falling prey to extremists or mercenaries who will promise them freedom and then punish or execute them for any dissent."

    You are right...

"And the whole world can see that Arab peoples are kept down by their own repressive governments, not by the existence of the small state of Israel."

Amen to that! You know, the State of Israel is the world's scapegoat *nodding*...

Lynda, superb comment to which I thank you a million times :D!
