Comment: The Portrait of a Woman

Portrait of a Woman by Károly Brocky
Woman: an adult female human; a female servant or subordinate; a wife; jezebel, a female lover or sweetheart.

Marianismo: the female counterpart to "machismo,". It is the ideal of true femininity - being modest, virtuous, sexually abstinent until marriage and then being faithful and subordinate to their husbands.

As we have seen (in “Comment: the Portrait of a Macho”), word definitions do not depict the elaborateness of being a man/macho and the same occurs when it comes to being a woman/mariana.

The journey from Femalehood to Womanhood is, often, rather complex and this intricacy is what lexicons fail in exposing:

One, virginity is over-rated (no, I do not agree with teenagers having sex – in my opinion, female virginity is to be offered rather later than sooner, for sex is an act that requires maturity and ethics [yes…you read it correctly]). If one chooses to remain a virgin until marriage, it’s fine; however when Man tries to use virginity as a means of control and power, under the flag of “ideal of true femininity” then I might have a problem with it.

Two, not all women make good wives and/or mothers. The fact that one is born with female genitalia doesn’t automatically make her a good mother; in fact, there are women who simply are not cut out for bearing children, for moulding infants. Not to mention being a wife: a task of extreme patience, dedication, commitment and love for being repetitive.

Three, women are the first ones to attack women – so much for kindness, faithfulness and loyalty. Sometimes, I’d swear women are jealous of whores. I mean, shouldn’t they be compassioned enough to understand that a harlot suffers unimaginable things and that many did not become sex-traders by choice? And if they did, shouldn’t other women comprehend that people should do whatever they love best?

Four, PMS is not a permit to go crazy; it does not grant women the right to have systematic mood swings and put on that face like “I am making the world a favour for existing”. Menstruation is not a green card to be rude to others either; it is only a period of renewal, and thus women should rejoice, not attack others (specially men).

Five, oestrogen should not dominate the female brain. The inability to make use of Reason and female despotism should not be blamed on hormones.

Six, women must stop being the emblem of irrationality. It is so tacky when they nag their husbands/partners for no apparent reason; when they pointlessly attack their partners’ friends/acquaintances; and specially when they vaginalise their way up the corporate ladder.

Seven, faking orgasms is not equivalent to being generous, patient or kind; doing it means deceiving the partner, perpetuating its own (or the lover’s) bad sexual performance, annulling and voiding oneself and yielding to illusion.

I am extremely demanding of women, I confess. But I am so because I acknowledge in them the role and responsibility of shaping the future of mankind. When women, in general, stop being Females only and upgrade to being Feminae then...

...The Portrait of a Woman will be restored to its glory.

Comments

  1. One of our church leaders made a statement, to the effect, that women (according to the Biblical account) were the crowning act of creation, so were created last. I do believe that women, by nature, have some of the best qualities found in mankind. The quality of nurturing by a mother cannot be equaled. However, women, by nature, also have the qualities that can turn the meanest! Women can be vicious and cutting. The greatest obstacle in becoming a great woman is to learn to control the tongue!

  2. Happy International Women's Day to you too, Max!

Realmente...some women disappoint me, and today is a good day to reflect on women's behaviour towards themselves and others.
Today I watched a campaign with Daniel Craig where Lady Dench asks if there is equality. Then she goes on saying that there isn't and she shows why. The main point that caught my eye (beside women doing the world's 2/3 of work and only earning 10% of its revenue) was the fact that, in the UK (at least) 2 women will suffer domestic violence per week [in Portugal, I think, it is 4 women per week (I am not sure though - I suggest a re-check on this number)].
This goes to show how much time feminists have been wasting on useless causes.

As for this great post: faking orgasms is pitiful; women who are irrational do not deserve to be called women at all; LOL I loved the term "vaginalise" (it is new to me) and the women who do it and are convinced that this is "girls power" they are very much mistaken & worthy of contempt; I always get sick with the way some women use their periods, PMS and hormones as an excuse for their laziness and stupidity; as for females bickering each other...well, they need to learn from our fellow-males (they are good when it comes to stand up for each other); it is true that not every woman is fit to be a wife/mother (Ted Bundy's mummy wasn't fit to be a mother and look at the result of her endeavour). LOL LOL people are too obsessed with virginity...and now that I think of it, perhaps people should all remain virgins cause losing one's virginity is too much work LOL...

    Marianismo: pure BS!

Off to read your Portrait of a Macho...

  3. Hi Delirious :D!

    Beautiful comment!

"However, women, by nature, also have the qualities that can turn the meanest! Women can be vicious and cutting."

    Agreed...

"The greatest obstacle in becoming a great woman is to learn to control the tongue!"

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL isn't this a stereotype? I know some men who should also control their tongue...

D, loved your input: thank you so much :D!

  4. Hi Ana :D!

"Happy International Women's Day to you too, Max!"

    Thanks...

"Realmente...some women disappoint me, and today is a good day to reflect on women's behaviour towards themselves and others.

I looked up for this campaign (which I absolutely loved - thanks for having mentioned it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?hl=en&v=gkp4t5NYzVM
The numbers are 1 in 4 women is a victim of domestic violence and 2 women, in the UK, are killed by a current/former partner...shocking! As for Portugal, 4 women die per month (victims of domestic violence).
No, women are not equal: each year, nations celebrate the international women's day and the conversation is always the same. Perhaps, one day the conversation will change because we have seen change we can believe in *nodding*.

"This goes to show how much time feminists have been wasting on useless causes."

Don't get me started on feminists...

LOL LOL I loved your second paragraph: you are funny.
Indeed, Ted Bundy is a good example of how some women are not cut out for motherhood. LOL so, offering one's virginity is too much work, eh? LOL LOL LOL I don't agree, but I guess it depends on personal experience, right?

    "Marianismo: pure BS!"

    Agreed...

Ana, thank you so much for this great comment :D.

    Cheers

  5. I smiled at the PMS comment. Can't really understand why some women use it as an excuse!

I agree, women can be really mean to each other. Guys tend to be more relaxed in friendship or at work I find, and slightly less competitive, contrary to popular belief.

  6. BRILLIANT post, Max!!! :-D LOVE what you wrote here and it's true that women are sometimes mean to other women, but even so I'm SO glad to have found many wonderful close female friends to whom I can count on. I know they'll never betray me or do anything bad towards me. :-))))

  7. Max - I know so many MEN who are irrational that they pale against anything I could come up with! lol...

I agree with the points you've made, except for the fact that women who have mood swings and negative behaviors during PMS are not necessarily throwing themselves into stereotypical behavior patterns. None of us are at our best when we are feeling uncomfortable or even ill.

As for equality, we know that pay is still unequal. And there are many men who want their women to bring in a paycheck, but won't meet them halfway with pitching in on the domestic front.

So our liberation is still in the distance, even if we don't play into the stereotypes.

Thanks for another thought-provoking post, dear Max.

  8. Hi Max,
People are really litle mistery boxes. So different in their equality...in fact most of the beings are simetric, some of them are complementary, other hunt/ run to survive. In brief...: at a physical level women "are" smooth, curvy and heavy pain bearers. Spiritually are fragile and protective, multi-tasker and ....ahmmm crazy/ inconstant humors.
Socially, women are scheme developers, always figuring out some strange ways to achieve targets, and yes so jelous, and manipulators.

Is there something wrong? No that's just the way it is, somethings will never change.

    Perfection...? there'snt such thing!

    All the best

  9. Hi Zhu :D!

"I smiled at the PMS comment. Can't really understand why some women use it as an excuse!"

I have a million stories about the many different situations in which women use PMS and menstruation as an excuse *nodding*.

"I agree, women can be really mean to each other. Guys tend to be more relaxed in friendship or at work I find, and slightly less competitive, contrary to popular belief."

True. I totally agree with you: men are more relaxed at work, at least...some women are rude when they are behind a counter...I can't understand it.

Zhu Zhu, thank you so much for your input, girl :D!

Thank you, gorgeous *bowing*. Well, I could only write this post because women predominate my family and because I have a lot of female friends to observe LOL *nodding*. I love them all, despite the idiosyncrasies...
Betrayal...such a harsh word...but yes, there are many tales out there involving women (and men for all that matter)...

Amel, you were missed and thank you so much for your input :D!

"I know so many MEN who are irrational that they pale against anything I could come up with! lol..."

LOL LOL LOL I hear you! I know quite a few myself...

"I agree with the points you've made, except for the fact that women who have mood swings and negative behaviors during PMS are not necessarily throwing themselves into stereotypical behavior patterns. None of us are at our best when we are feeling uncomfortable or even ill."

I understand what you mean. But you know me: I believe the mind should control the body and not the other way around... ;).

"As for equality, we know that pay is still unequal. And there are many men who want their women to bring in a paycheck, but won't meet them halfway with pitching in on the domestic front."

    True. Again, true...

"So our liberation is still in the distance, even if we don't play into the stereotypes."

I wouldn't agree with this entirely, but generally speaking you are right.

"Thanks for another thought-provoking post, dear Max."

  12. Ciao Gallardo :D!

"People are really litle mistery boxes."

Thank God! It makes the world a more interesting place to dwell in....

"So different in their equality...in fact most of the beings are simetric, some of them are complementary, other hunt/ run to survive. In brief...: at a physical level women "are" smooth, curvy and heavy pain bearers. Spiritually are fragile and protective, multi-tasker and ....ahmmm crazy/ inconstant humors."

Women are smooth, curvy and heavy pain bearers, eh? I liked this description...
You really find women to be spiritually fragile? I thought men were the ones to be described as such...
    Anyway, I loved this paragraph...

"Socially, women are scheme developers, always figuring out some strange ways to achieve targets, and yes so jelous, and manipulators."

LOL LOL this reminded me of a scene in "Desperate Housewives" (in Wisteria Lane) where Bree asks her friends how they'd do something (I can't remember what) and one of them, Gaby, answers "Oh come on, we're women...we do what we do best: we manipulate!" LOL...lovely!

"Is there something wrong? No that's just the way it is, somethings will never change."

    LOL I see...

    "Perfection...? there'snt such thing!"

Not on earth, at least, no...still one can try to attain it.

Neneh Cherry: I love this song (well, I love all her songs)!
Roy Orbison: LOL LOL oh that is just a mean song! *dancing to the sound of it*
Congrats for the great taste in music, you gained my respect *bowing*!

G, as always...man, thank you for your input :D!

  13. Hi Max,

    Bravo!

What can I say that hasn't been said? You have covered it all rather luxuriously.

Maybe if more women felt as passionately as you, there would not be a market for The Real Housewives of......

I didn't know the term,"Marianismo," thanks for teaching me.

Women have so much inerent power, yet we don't use it.

Keep up the good work. The species needs you.

    Merry Weekend my friend.

    Women Cheers!

  14. Hey Max this is very provoking post, and I love it. I like the fact that you emphasize the mind controlling the body, and not the body controlling the mind. But but you know how it is sometimes, lol.

Now about mothers, I didn't know if I would be good mother or not. Things happened for a reason that I was able to have baby when I was in late thirties. When I look back now, I don't think I be the same person I am today or rather the same parent or mother - someone out there wanted me to mature, and I am great full for that.

Max another great post as always. Hope you are doing well girl.

PS thanks always so much for your comments, especially the last one.

"Women have so much inerent power, yet we don't use it."

You know it! And I love our gender so much, but I need to confess some of them get to my wits lol...

I like it when the mind controls the body - meditation does that for us lol.
Yes, a friend of mine has also told me that sometimes it is hard to let the mind take over lol. ;)
