Re-defining The Right Wing

The European perspective...
Motto: God, Nation, Family

Right Wingers make sure they let the world know how religious they are: they attend the church/temple every week; they heavily participate in every church/temple activity; they join certain groups (or agencies) and God is always present in their speech. But then, when in the political arena, they seem to contradict spiritual values: they display bigotry, xenophobia; sometimes hatred, lack of concern for social matters (after all that is for the lefties), contempt and belligerent behaviour.

The Right Wing is more patriotic than any other Wing: it knows the national anthem and sings it; it respects the flag. It is proud of its nation’s cultural identity, values and history. It aims at a national common project (as long as it fits within its values). But then, when in the political arena, it can stubbornly hold on to its ideals even if it means to bring the country to chaos. Flexibility is a word the Right Wing ignores.

The Right is all about family values: its partisans usually marry early; they have a lot of children; they display an image of a perfect familial unity and do anything (absolutely anything) to keep it intact. The Traditional Family (i.e. no gays) comes first. But then, when in the political arena, some of them end up by seeing its true colours exposed: extra-marital affairs, homosexuality (the very thing most of them speak against), physical and psychological abuse within their family etc.

Furthermore, the Right Wing is viewed as being a cold-hearted capitalist, greedy; with no respect whatsoever for the environment (again, that is for the lefties); unethical and aiming at benefitting the private sector at all costs.

I am a Right Winger: I deeply believe in God; I seek the success of my nation and my family always comes first (no matter what or whom).
However, I (and those like me) endeavour to re-define the Right Wing...

Re-definition

Motto: God, Family, Nation

Right Wingers believe in God, but they do not necessarily have a religion. God is omnipresent, meaning that each home can be a temple. Community service can be done in several ways. Their speech and behaviour reflect their spiritual progress: Love, Humanity, Generosity; Respect and Peace (although fully conscious that in order to have peace some wars must be fought).

Right Wingers understand that families are the foundation of any nation. They strive to re-instate family values, in our society, for it is the only way to bring back real order to communities.

Definition of family

A- Two adults raising a child or children.
B - An adult bringing up a child or children (of course, situation A is preferable, however if not possible mono-parental families are better than no family at all).

Marriage (between a man and woman) is essential. Legal Unions (between same sex couples) are a right. Living together, although respected, is not aimed at.

The Right Wing loves its country, its national identity & symbols (flag and anthem), and history. However, it also understands that its culture can be further enriched by other cultures that legally come to its nation and help in its development. Right Wingers love law and order. They also seek the wellbeing of all the citizens of the country they love. They defend an ethical capitalism, philanthropy and social responsibility. Since they love the “Patria” they must care for its environment. They comprehend words like flexibility and compromise.

Presently, people see the Right Wing as the image of social division, snobs and “anything goes in Business” and, hence, turn to the left. It is time to re-define it.

  1. Max, an illustrious piece of work…

I have to say our articles have a VERY interesting flow when read directly one after the other.

The perspective of the right wing for Europe has a different flavour from that in North America although there certainly are many similarities…

In the United States both wings need to appear devoutly Christian…no way around it…you cannot win the presidency of the United States if you do not appear Christian. Note I am not saying they have to be Christian but have that appearance…Such as say Kennedy and perhaps Obama…I understand that this is distasteful to many Europeans (it is to many Canadians where there is a prejudice against openly Protestant Christians as it comes with so much US baggage of intertwined Church and state…the religious right).

I despise the term “family values” as it is a feeble phrase that can be mischaracterized easily and it often used to misrepresent the values of genuine Jesus followers…providing a character and stereotype that is easily represented as shallow brainlessness. So I am not against families or high values simply how the phrase is incapable of communicating boldly seizing the debating threshold.

It is interesting to read you define yourself as right wing…but you love Obama who hates the right wing…certainly economically he detests the right wing and conservative economic values. He strongly supports abortion:

In 1997, Obama voted in the Illinois Senate against SB 230, a bill designed to prevent partial-birth abortions. In the US Senate, Obama has consistently voted to expand embryonic stem cell research. He has voted against requiring minors who get out-of-state abortions to notify their parents. The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) gives Obama a 100% score on his pro-choice voting record in the Senate for 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Source: Obama Nation, by Jerome Corsi, p.238-239 Aug 1, 2008

I have to say that I do not fit either political wing perfectly…perhaps to be more precise I do not fit them as they are popularly understood (I do understand the proper interpretations but many if not most people do not therefore it can miscommunicates the truth).

I suppose I could be termed a “Commonsense Conservative” whose politics include individual responsibility, economic opportunity and freedom in community. I think people should work hard at their own lives but we must help those who truly cannot help themselves so they are not run over by life. I believe capitalism and the free market correctly diagnose the human condition (another reason why we must also take care to help one another as we have a propensity towards running over one another). We must celebrate individuality in community, individual freedoms and liberties are essential yet we live in democratic community so we must also care for community not just ourselves. We can be measured by how we care or do not care for the weakest among us. I am a Jesus follower first and foremost and this relationship with God informs the entirety of my life. That being said I strongly support freedom of religion/faith and the other popular commonly held forms of constitutional freedoms.

It seems to me that we are actually rather similar in inclinations…however we are different in some ways such as in the particulars of leadership…and a few other matters…

One of those matters is perhaps in the dynamics of change as our visions of the right wing moving forward have variances in order, variety and formulation.

    One of your best articles…..

  2. Not really into politics, mostly cause of the nature of the beast, to get ahead I believe you have to compromise your values. I do however like your take on the Right and be very interested to know your feelings and ideas on the Left. I would be classified as a Right guy more so then a Lefty as they are generally a little too liberal for me.

  3. ~Greeting and Salutations Lovely Max~

All of this talk about wings comes at a strategic time as I have recently eaten “turkey wings” with “cranberry sauce”. Certainly not the same as Tragnorian eggs yet a delicacy in its own way I suppose. I shall perhaps attempt to have it served at the Pre-Enchantra Water Music Festival Celebratory Gala Party. I did not find either wing to be more succulent than the other.

As I am a journalist I have an inquiry. Could the right wing be prone to nationalism which inclines it towards war more expeditiously than the left wing?

You may find it of interest that I have recently been spending some time with some Scottish soldiers in Portugal during the Napoleonic wars, men wearing skirts drinking appalling amounts of alcohol in Porto was not pretty.

  4. Max, I am a bit puzzled over the proposed new Motto: "God, Family, Nation". It seems to leave the center and left to be only inhabited by pure atheists, which I understand to be a minority even in Europe, while non-existent in places like Africa. Anarchists believe in a nation, but perhaps one that is, um, slightly modified from the present. Pick a gay bar in San Francisco and there will be no end to the affirmation of the importance of family. Maybe I just feel bad about leaving the atheists out in the cold?

  5. Ciao Max,

Re-defining the right wing is a good and essential move for it means humanitarian evolution.
However, taking a risk of sounding cynical, I do not foresee the right wing's imagination grasp the concept.

  7. Re-defining the Right Wing is utopian:

1st - the Right Wing for the last 60 years (missed the opportunity to change after the WWII) still clung to the same old ideas and it seems that within its quarters there's no man of good will.

2nd - the Right Winger's base is built upon frustrated and angry vociferous ignorants (at least the communist base is just ignorant and jealous) willing to blindly do whatsoever to please their best and for the sake of belonging.

If the Right Wing would dare to re-define itself, the base would certainly change to educated young men and women, who before excuting orders would question the same.
For instance, the Social Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic Party could be that niche, however the 1st one seems ideologically confused for in its party lines it varies from repented communists to monarchists; the Christian Democratic Party in order to get more votes, more often than not, winks to the lunatic fringe.
In the XXI century the Right Wing, alas, is far from: God, Family, Nation.

    Max, splendid as ever!!!

  8. Max:

Whew! For a minute there you had me going. My eyes turned red, my lips tightened and my arthritic hands rolled into painful fists. I thought I was actually going to have to use some of my meager Social Security, of which I worked nearly fifty years to accrue, and buy a ticket to Portugal and have Camp-David type summit meeting with you. You know, to straighten things out once and for all. But then I read the second part of your theses and I was purring like a little kitten. Not that I’m a kitten---it’s a metaphor. Thank you so much for setting the record straight. But you left something out, namely, left-wingers are liars, thieves and cheats. Let's be clear about that. From healthcare reform to global warming to cap and trade to the war on terrorism, to the so-called economic stimulus, just watch any news program, listen to the radio, or read the newspapers and you can’t help but come to that conclusion. Remember when Bill Clinton said something like “I did not have sex with that woman.” Remember when Barrack Obama said something like, “Healthcare will not increase the deficit.” Remember when Jimmy Carter said something like, ”Right-wing dissention for healthcare reform is racist.” And those same politicians hate Sarah Palin, a normal white, female American, citizen for even presuming she could run for national political office simply because she values honesty, fidelity, Christmas, life and patriotism. It’s disgusting.

    Max, just my two cents.

    Happy trails.

  9. Interesting, this is exactly how I see my opponents ;-)

The funny thing for me, a left-wing person, is that there is initially nothing wrong with values such as patriotism, family etc. But I must admit I can't agree with the way there are being used by right-wing political parties.

I believe that gay people should have the right to marry because I don't see a problem. I believe that religion can be a great moral guide, yet I hate to see it being used to spread some hidden agendas. I deeply respect my country (countries...??!) yet I can't agree with militarism and arbitrary territorial boundaries.

I think it's good to have a ying and yang, left wing and right wing because the balance should produce good policies for people.

  10. Hi Max,

I believe at the core (or I would hope) of any "wing" is that we all have the same values; a good decent life that is meaningful with as little stress as possible, but somehow politics convolutes everything. It puts people into boxes and tells them to think along a certain line and not have any individuality. They make it about money, not values. About right and left, right and wrong, the classes - rich and poor and anything they can spin to make us believe that they are doing it for the people. They spend so much time casting disparaging remarks and imagery of the other side that I am not sure what either side stands for these days.

I would hope and maybe this is idealistic that the left and right would come together in a common consciousness and actually work for the good of the whole and not their own agendas and wallets. (I am especially talking about Al Gore and climate-gate.)

Whether we are are right or left, we have to get right or get left. (Get it?)

    Thanks for another provocative piece.

    Wing Cheers!

  12. Hey LS :D!

"Max, an illustrious piece of work…"

Thank you so much, darling *bowing*!

"In the United States both wings need to appear devoutly Christian…no way around it…you cannot win the presidency of the United States if you do not appear Christian."

I know; and for Europeans that is so strange (given our history). I heard that the US claims to be a secular state, yet religion (Christian) is extremely important in politics *nodding*. Having a religion does not automatically make of you a good politician...

"Note I am not saying they have to be Christian but have that appearance…Such as say Kennedy and perhaps Obama…I understand that this is distasteful to many Europeans (it is to many Canadians where there is a prejudice against openly Protestant Christians as it comes with so much US baggage of intertwined Church and state…the religious right)."

I wouldn't say distasteful, I'd say it is rather senseless to Europeans (mixing Church with state and pretending to be something that a person is not entirely). Kennedy was Catholic, yes?

"It is interesting to read you define yourself as right wing…but you love Obama who hates the right wing…certainly economically he detests the right wing and conservative economic values. He strongly supports abortion:"

LS, I admire President Obama's intelligence...it is not a question of loving because I do not know him, we have never met, we have never chatted; yet I admire his intellectual abilities.
President Obama, personally, does not support abortion, but he doesn't think that the state has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body; he thinks that abortion is about personal values and choices - it is his opinion, which needs to be respected. I do not agree with him, obviously.

"I have to say that I do not fit either political wing perfectly…perhaps to be more precise I do not fit them as they are popularly understood (I do understand the proper interpretations but many if not most people do not therefore it can miscommunicates the truth)."

That is the problem: people need to be more informed. And parties do a terrible job at it, because they want to bluntly manipulate people.

"I suppose I could be termed a “Commonsense Conservative” whose politics include individual responsibility, economic opportunity and freedom in community."

LOL I like the new term...you are a firm candidate to my new definition of Right Wing (we also welcome Neo-Conservatives).

"I believe capitalism and the free market correctly diagnose the human condition (another reason why we must also take care to help one another as we have a propensity towards running over one another)."

Capitalism is essential, but must be regulated (it must become ethical). Free market must be like free will: not that free. All of this as being part of the Responsibility program.

"It seems to me that we are actually rather similar in inclinations…however we are different in some ways such as in the particulars of leadership…and a few other matters…"

Diversity is the beauty of life...*bowing*...

"One of those matters is perhaps in the dynamics of change as our visions of the right wing moving forward have variances in order, variety and formulation."

    How so?

The Far Right Wing is prone to nationalism. The Right Wing is prone to patriotism. Two different things.
The first is based on bigotry; and the second is based on national pride.

"You may find it of interest that I have recently been spending some time with some Scottish soldiers in Portugal during the Napoleonic wars, men wearing skirts drinking appalling amounts of alcohol in Porto was not pretty."

"Max, I am a bit puzzled over the proposed new Motto: "God, Family, Nation". It seems to leave the center and left to be only inhabited by pure atheists, which I understand to be a minority even in Europe, while non-existent in places like Africa."

I see why you're puzzled. Well, I have a theory about the centre (I call centrists Humpty-Dumpties; they are always on the wall, and move around politics in a way to please everybody) and the left...well, the left likes to scream all around that they are atheists and agnostics (even if they are not) anyway, so I don't think they'd mind my new Motto.
And Looney: there are no "Pure atheists" - it is a myth...
Now you touched a very interesting point: there are no atheists in Africa, it is a fact (unless you are an European atheist and moved there; but even so that individual would end up by being converted to something)...interesting, eh?

"Anarchists believe in a nation, but perhaps one that is, um, slightly modified from the present. Pick a gay bar in San Francisco and there will be no end to the affirmation of the importance of family. Maybe I just feel bad about leaving the atheists out in the cold?"

Anarchists do not believe in a nation (because a nation, by definition, implies organisation which can only be attained by Law and Order), they believe in chaos.
Being gay doesn't mean that one ignores the importance of family, wouldn't you say?
LOL LOL you feel bad for leaving atheists out in the cold? LOL LOL Looney, you are funny...

"2nd - the Right Winger's base is built upon frustrated and angry vociferous ignorants (at least the communist base is just ignorant and jealous) willing to blindly do whatsoever to please their best and for the sake of belonging."

So very true *nodding*. And sad, really...

"If the Right Wing would dare to re-define itself, the base would certainly change to educated young men and women, who before excuting orders would question the same."

I believe that one day the Right Wing will dare to re-define itself.

"For instance, the Social Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic Party could be that niche, however the 1st one seems ideologically confused for in its party lines it varies from repented communists to monarchists; the Christian Democratic Party in order to get more votes, more often than not, winks to the lunatic fringe."

A repented communist, who saw the light, is always welcome (that is not the problem); the issue is when this repented one keeps on behaving like a communist at heart. The Christian Democratic Party is very interesting but sometimes they do throw that "nazi-like" rhetoric that bothers any intelligent person.

"In the XXI century the Right Wing, alas, is far from: God, Family, Nation."

Like I said...for now it is; but I have faith in the future.

"But then I read the second part of your theses and I was purring like a little kitten. Not that I’m a kitten---it’s a metaphor."

    Ah, Swu, you rock, man.

"Thank you so much for setting the record straight. But you left something out, namely, left-wingers are liars, thieves and cheats. Let's be clear about that."

You are welcome, mate. LOL well, you know...I have an issue with lefties; but the truth must be told: Right Wingers can also be liars (where are the massive destruction weapons? And you know what I'm talking about here); thieves (in a more classy way, true) and cheats...it is all part of bad politics.
The thing is; lefties claim to be righteous and decent when they are not, they pretend to care more about the people (when they do not); and right-wingers do not hide their flaws.

"And those same politicians hate Sarah Palin, a normal white, female American, citizen for even presuming she could run for national political office simply because she values honesty, fidelity, Christmas, life and patriotism. It’s disgusting."

I do not like Sarah Palin, as a politician, myself. What does "a normal white female American" mean exactly? Why the need to state the obvious (that she's white)? This is one of the reasons why the Right Wing is so illy viewed.
Sarah Palin doesn't represent American women (not even all "normal white" females), for I view American women as being more informed, more intellectual (yes, because we are all intelligent, yet not all develop their intellectual side - which is the case, with Ms Palin), more cultivated, less narrow-minded.
Now, do not get me wrong, I share some values with Ms Palin...but frankly, whenever she opens her mouth I just feel like sending her back to school.

    "Max, just my two cents."

Thank you, for sharing them, Swu :D!

I believe that religion can be a great moral guide, yet I hate to see it being used to spread some hidden agendas. I deeply respect my country (countries...??!) yet I can't agree with militarism and arbitrary territorial boundaries."

Marriage, by definition, is a legal union between a man and a woman; therefore using this word (marriage) to define a legal union between a couple of the same sex is senseless and false. Now, Legal Unions (i.e. unions conducted by a local civil authority) is a right, and I have no issues with it either.
Religion, just like Politics, is being misused by rascals.

"I think it's good to have a ying and yang, left wing and right wing because the balance should produce good policies for people."

I couldn't agree more with you. Although the left-wing's rhetoric is annoying (to me) I admit that it keeps the Right Wing from committing excesses. So, yes...ying and yang is required.
However, the left wing many times does not compromise...(at least, here in Portugal), which can lead to a disequilibrium.

Zhu, outstanding comment: thank you ever so much, girl :D!

Having grown up in the catholic schooling system, I can tell you that it contained all that you wrote about in both motto's.

Yes, the Catholics I knew, both student and parent, contained the good, the bad and the ugly.

There is one thing missing from both motto's, no fault of your own though, and that is sport.

Sport, Family, Nation, God, is what goes on down here, and in the majority of cases, sport is at the top of the list, no matter what side of the motto your on.

That reminds me, do you think Portugal has any chance at all of beating Australia in the 2010 FIFA World Cup?

  25. Max:

When I said Palin was a normal American white female, I wasn't meaning to impart any particular prejudice on my part. If I had said a normal American black woman, would you have replied the same way? Normal means normal---nothing else. Point made, you know what I meant. I said it that way, because the left thinks if you're white, you can't be right. Go OJ. They are so self righteous it makes me sick. You have known me for a while now, and you know that I am all for women's equal rights, but when a woman loves God and country, and states it publically, she is then called stupid and uncultured. What? That's BS on the face of it. Sarah might not be a rocket scientist, but name one politician who is and I'll eat your hat, brim and all. The only difference between her and the "normal" left person is that the Left actually believes they have all the answers because they are on the side of righteousness. Praise the Lord--Ah-men! To oppose them means you are wrong by definition. Again, that's such a mountain of BS it nearly blocks the sunlight. In fact, Congress should issue all the Republicans flashlights to help them find their way around the capitol---solar powered of course. Or, as the left likes to say, Green. I tell you, this country needs to stop spending money like there's no tomorrow, and adopt a more pragmatic stance when it comes to economics, or we're going to find ourselves in the same mess as the former Soviet Union. And if we go down, just imagine the avalanche of countries that will follow.

Whew! Thank you so much for letting me get that off my chest. I feel so much better now.

    Happy trails.

  26. Hey Peter :D!

"Having read this my mind turned to only one sort around here that I know of, Catholics!"

Ah, yes...I also know them well...

"Having grown up in the catholic schooling system, I can tell you that it contained all that you wrote about in both motto's."

I know: my mom was also raised in the Catholic schooling system...

"Yes, the Catholics I knew, both student and parent, contained the good, the bad and the ugly."

    Just like everyone else, right?

"There is one thing missing from both motto's, no fault of your own though, and that is sport."

lol You are right: sport is missing...

"Sport, Family, Nation, God, is what goes on down here, and in the majority of cases, sport is at the top of the list, no matter what side of the motto your on."

Really? They put Sport before God? My Lord...

"That reminds me, do you think Portugal has any chance at all of beating Australia in the 2010 FIFA World Cup?"

LOL LOL Peter, if our coach (here they call it Mister) were Scolari I would say that "Oh yeah" we would beat you in a heart beat. But since our current Mister (Carlos Queirós) likes to get on our nerves (for you to see that we barely got in the 2010 World Cup - for the first time we went to the playoffs), I am not sure...

Peter, thank you so much for your input :D!

    Cheers

  27. Swu,

"When I said Palin was a normal American white female, I wasn't meaning to impart any particular prejudice on my part. If I had said a normal American black woman, would you have replied the same way?"

Ah ok, I get it now. Yes, if you had said "normal American black woman" I would've still replied the same way (you see, I focus not on people's race or ethnicity, I focus on their character).

"Normal means normal---nothing else. Point made, you know what I meant."

Yes, I know what you meant...

"I said it that way, because the left thinks if you're white, you can't be right. Go OJ. They are so self righteous it makes me sick."

    Really? "Go OJ" LOL LOL...
That is so true. The left can be self-righteous (it is so annoying).

"You have known me for a while now, and you know that I am all for women's equal rights, but when a woman loves God and country, and states it publically, she is then called stupid and uncultured. What? That's BS on the face of it."

Yes, I know you are for women's equal rights (Blessed be you). What? Oh my God, maybe that is what people say about me behind my back lol...I love God, I love my country and I state it publicly (do you know what they call me in Portugal because of this? A Fascist...can you believe it?).

"Sarah might not be a rocket scientist, but name one politician who is and I'll eat your hat, brim and all. The only difference between her and the "normal" left person is that the Left actually believes they have all the answers because they are on the side of righteousness."

Ms Palin doesn't need to be a rocket scientist, but she should be more informed, more cultivated (let's leave the intellectual part out of this) and if she were I can't guarantee you that she'd have a huge political chance. But she doesn't stand one (not the way she is now).

"I tell you, this country needs to stop spending money like there's no tomorrow, and adopt a more pragmatic stance when it comes to economics, or we're going to find ourselves in the same mess as the former Soviet Union. And if we go down, just imagine the avalanche of countries that will follow."

So true: if the US goes down, the rest of the world will go down with it (or so it seems).
About spending money: the former administration practically threw money out of the window, man...$1 trillion in a useless war (and mind you, I supported the war in Iraq - as a means to bring down Saddam; but once this mission was accomplished...man, what a waste of money)? And of course, this is part of the present deficit...

"Whew! Thank you so much for letting me get that off my chest. I feel so much better now."

LOL you are welcome, man! I am glad you feel better now :D!

    Excellent conversation!
