Physical World: its purpose

My dear friend, Mel, suggested that I’d endeavour to answer the following question “What is the purpose of the physical world?”. Let’s see what my intellect was able to produce.

We are born into matter. Since early age we learn that in order to get what we want, something must be given in return. We also learn what it is to want something, to truly believe that we need it, and see it denied to us. We grow up, we need things (many times, superfluous things) and we strive to get them. Most of the times we become obsessed with acquiring them...We work. We want to have a certain social status, we want power...and we want it so badly that we are willing to do just about anything to get it.

Now, the way I am exposing these simple facts may strike you as being too crude, too harsh...to the point where you may ask yourself “Is matter something bad, or even evil?” I reply: Not at all, as long as you do not get greedy. There is a purpose and a reason for everything to be. So what is the purpose of matter; of the physical world? Purpose: to put us to the test.

We are souls, with a specific mission on earth, that should never forget where we came from and particularly Who created us. Yet when “trapped” in flesh, in matter, many tend to forget (or neglect) this intrinsic and innate knowledge; since the concept of “need, want, must have” takes over their brain. We are here to build things, to create, to leave a legacy of any sort (so that other souls may come and, like us, go through a learning & evolutionary process in the midst of new challenges – the more sophisticated the physical world becomes, the more challenging it is to the soul) and for that to occur we have to make use of the “needs, wants, must have” (since it is what propels us to do all things). The challenge lies in balancing these “needs, wants, must have” with some sort of spiritual connection to the Source.

The physical world is alluring, seductive, distractive, poisonous and fatal. We are being tested: are we able to reach the Existential Equilibrium or not?

Existential Equilibrium: the balance between a Material life and a Spiritual one.
We need money to live; we need some sort of power in our lives; we need to feel like we belong to a social group (and for that we need to display exterior signs that are in concatenation with the targeted group). We like our material stuff: mp3, computers, laptops, plasma TV screens, Hi-fi stereos, walkmans; cars, houses, estates; design clothing and shoes, bags, sunglasses, accessories; perfumes, makeup; jewellery; art collections etc...but must we become material-slaves? Must we yield to greed?
We need to have a spiritual life. We can’t go on feeling empty; we can’t seriously believe that it is healthy to fight our essence and silence that voice within that keeps telling us what IS; we can’t keep wanting, in vain, to disconnect ourselves from the Source. We have to turn to Him...but must we metamorphose into absurd and judgemental fanatics?

The point of the Equilibrium is to be able to live in harmony with ourselves, so that we can better fulfil our mission (because if we focus too much on the material side we incur the risk of getting lost and becoming confused about our own existence; and there is no point to focus mainly on the spiritual side, otherwise what would be the point of incarnating? We could all just stay at Home).

Matter is not the enemy, but our mind may very well become our number one foe (if we allow it).

  1. Oh,great post! You must have read my mind because I have been writing about these issues on my religion blog. I first wrote about the "Premortal existence", and the other day wrote about this Earth life. We have alot in common in our beliefs! There truly is an Equilibrium that must be attained. This physical body has so many natural desires that it is often difficult for our spirit to curb them! I'm glad you addressed this topic! :)

  2. Hey D!! :D

"Oh,great post!" - thank you, darling *bowing*!

"You must have read my mind because I have been writing about these issues on my religion blog. You have been active on this type of issues too? I must stop by your religious blog!!!

"There truly is an Equilibrium that must be attained. This physical body has so many natural desires that it is often difficult for our spirit to curb them! I'm glad you addressed this topic!" - I totally hear you, girl! And I am glad that you liked it :D!

D, thank you so much for your comment; it is always good to have you here *bowing*!

  4. well done as usual max! it is so important to have balance. and yes matter is not the real enemy but ourselves, it is true that we need material things but there should be balance. we sometimes get obsessed with something that we do almost anything to have it. it is sad that many turn bad and greedy and forget that those are just material things.

thanks for allowing me to advertise here :)

  5. Max,
You do not disappoint. I love the way you have weaved everything together to where it makes perfect sense. However, (I always try to have a "however") I am not so sure about the purpose being "to put us to the test." It is definitely a possibility, a strong possibility.

BTW, I have just re-read your post for the 3rd time. Each time I do it makes more sense to me. I must, reluctantly, withdraw my "however."

"We are here to build things, to create, to leave a legacy of any sort (so that other souls may come and, like us, go through a learning & evolutionary process in the midst of new challenges – the more sophisticated the physical world becomes, the more challenging it is to the soul) and for that to occur we have to make use of the “needs, wants, must have” (since it is what propels us to do all things).
The challenge lies in balancing these “needs, wants, must have” with some sort of spiritual connection to the Source." says it all. Brilliantly written and so concise.

"The physical world is alluring, seductive, distractive, poisonous and fatal. We are being tested: are we able to reach the Existential Equilibrium or not?" WOW!!!!

"Matter is not the enemy, but our mind may very well become our number one foe (if we allow it)." Excellent ending.

    Beautifully written.

  6. I also believe we are here to create and leave a legacy, but also to learn from what's around us. We are here to make things beautiful and challenging, to live, simply.

  7. Hi! What is the purpose of the physical world? Max, I think you've covered almost everything.

What more could I add? Well, here goes!

The only thing I can add, is that perhaps this entire world is just one large school. As we progress through life we are tested beyond measure.

Some fall by the wayside and some go onto greater things.

Now, who is testing us? Who is examinating what we do and how well we do it?

First off, we set our own benchmarks and try to live up to them. We don't always make it but as long we do our best, we will always pass.

Lastly, we hope, I hope, that someone above is looking down and taking note of all the great and bad things that are going on down here.

I know I don't always live up to his/her expectations but I'm doing my best and learning from my mistakes.

I just hope he/she takes pity of me, when my time comes. If not, I'll take what's coming to me.

    Take Care,
    Peter

I think your sentence,"The challenge lies in balancing these “needs, wants, must have” with some sort of spiritual connection to the Source." says it all. It would be impossible for me to improve on those words.

God post. (I meant to say "Good post." Maybe it's a sign.)

    Happy trails.

"However, (I always try to have a "however") I am not so sure about the purpose being "to put us to the test." It is definitely a possibility, a strong possibility." - LOL and I love it when you try to have a "however"! The more I look at it, the more I reach to this conclusion, Mel...

"BTW, I have just re-read your post for the 3rd time. Each time I do it makes more sense to me. I must, reluctantly, withdraw my "however."" - LOL LOL "relunctantly" LOL LOL! Mel, you kill me! Well, at least it makes sense to you...

"We are here to make things beautiful and challenging, to live, simply." - Aaah, but living is anything but simple, mon amie! Even behind the simplest gesture or event (at least what it seems to be the simplest) lies a complexity that is inherent to existence, an entangled web that needs the proper tools to be dealt with...no, living is never simple; we can't just be here to simply live...it wouldn't make sense.

Girl, thanks for your incredible input: it made me philosophise once again :D!

  15. Hi Max,
Happy belated Maxday. Your first post as a married woman. How did it feel?

"Since early age we learn that in order to get what we want, something must be given in return."

I still don't think that people get the quid pro quo concept. The world is full of givers and takers and in my observation, I have noticed that people are one or the other. The balance comes into play when we learn how to give and how to accept. We HAVE to do both in order to grow.

"We also learn what it is to want something, to truly believe that we need it, and see it denied to us."

And this can cause many people problems. When they feel that they have been denied something they want, they wreak havoc on others with atrocious behavior criminal activity, self-abuse, etc. I believe that we always get what we need - it just comes in forms that my be foreign to us - forms we don't like - forms that are painful. We are never really denied the feast God has prepared for us.

"We grow up, we need things (many times, superfluous things) and we strive to get them. Most of the times we become obsessed with acquiring them..."

Agreed. We are a society of consumers in the mall of life. Some will compromise themselves to get what they want.

"So what is the purpose of matter; of the physical world?
Purpose: to put us to the test."

I look at the physical world as being one massive training facility - a gym, if you will and a gym of wills.

"We are souls, with a specific mission on earth, that should never forget where we came from.."

Soul exists become God loves it. We already have a legacy coming into this life. How amazing it is to be here because of love. We get to experience the highest highs, the deepest depths of love. We are privileged to be able to encompass love and have it encompass us.

"The challenge lies in balancing these “needs, wants, must have” with some sort of spiritual connection to the Source."

Yes, you are right. Everything is connected to that source - our light.

"The physical world is alluring, seductive, distractive, poisonous and fatal."

I can say with unmitigating certainty that no one gets out of here alive. ;D

"We like our material stuff: mp3, computers, laptops, plasma TV screens, Hi-fi stereos, walkmans; cars, houses, estates; design clothing and shoes, bags, sunglasses, accessories; perfumes, makeup; jewellery; art collections etc...but must we become material-slaves? Must we yield to greed?"

We must never yield to greed, yet so many of us do just that. I believe that people think that the more possessions they have, the happier they will be. That couldn't be further from the truth. I think the opposite may be true - the more possessions we have, the unhappier we are because we keep trying to fill the void with meaningless devices. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device."

"We can’t go on feeling empty; we can’t seriously believe that it is healthy to fight our essence and silence that voice within that keeps telling us what IS; we can’t keep wanting, in vain, to disconnect ourselves from the Source."

Until we hit the bottom of the barrel and feel the crevices of life, we will continue to strive for the superficial and praise the folly.

"The point of the Equilibrium is to be able to live in harmony with ourselves, so that we can better fulfil our mission."

And gather experience that will be stored in our karmic memory for the next one and the next one and the next one.

"..what would be the point of incarnating? We could all just stay at Home.)"

ROFL. That was a great zinger. (unexpected laughter.)

"Matter is not the enemy, but our mind may very well become our number one foe (if we allow it)."

Bravo! Well done. Speech. Speech. Speech. Audience goes wild. Standing ovation. Cheering. "Max, Max, Max, Max."

    Excellent post my dear.

    Bravo Cheers.

  16. oi! disculpe, mas nao me alembro mais como falar e portuguese!
I enjoyed your post, and have sympathy with your viewpoint, that it can work as an antidote to the worst aspects of the modern capitalist world. Yet, you seemed to talk about material things as just these objects of commercial desire, the trinkets we pine for in our selfish hours. But matter is also the heart of a star, the coffee-swirls of galaxies and most importantly, the community of neurons and dendrites in our brains...the brains that give rise to consciousness. These brains, hard-wired as they are to seek patterns and meanings and indeed impose them, like to imagine a designed purpose. Are these missions and gods not just an aspect of our self-important egotism? Are we unable to consider a universe where matter matters? The atoms that constitute us were forged in stars ; in a way, we are the universe regarding itself, as far as we know unique in that respect ; and however strange or alien to us it may seem, there may be no purpose.

  18. Hi Alexys,

    :D

"Happy belated Maxday. Your first post as a married woman. How did it feel?" - Happy Maxday, darling :D! lol so true...it felt like a hot drink with 10 spoons of happiness: soothing and extra sweet :D!

"The balance comes into play when we learn how to give and how to accept. We HAVE to do both in order to grow." - Yes! I agree with you in number, gender and degree, girl: we must give and take, since it is the law of the opposites, right? If you practice only one of them you will be unbalanced, and unbalance the world by consequence.

"When they feel that they have been denied something they want, they wreak havoc on others with atrocious behavior criminal activity, self-abuse, etc. I believe that we always get what we need - it just comes in forms that my be foreign to us - forms we don't like - forms that are painful. We are never really denied the feast God has prepared for us." - beautifully put (I couldn't have said it better myself) *bowing*! What we want may not always be what we need, indeed. And God never fails to provide us with our needs, our true needs....

"I look at the physical world as being one massive training facility - a gym, if you will and a gym of wills." - fantastic view! "gym of wills" absolutely...it is like we have to sweat off our futile wills and wants so that what is right (what is a true need) can tone up and gain the desired shape....

"We already have a legacy coming into this life" - so true, Lady A *bowing*...

"I can say with unmitigating certainty that no one gets out of here alive. ;D" - LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL you LOL LOL are LOL LOL right LOL LOL LOL! ;D

"We must never yield to greed, yet so many of us do just that. I believe that people think that the more possessions they have, the happier they will be. That couldn't be further from the truth." - one can have possessions within reason. For example, what good does it make to have 7 cars (not collection ones) and only drive one or two? Why have the other 6/5? To show off? And in what showing off will increase your value as a human being, as a soul?

"I think the opposite may be true - the more possessions we have, the unhappier we are because we keep trying to fill the void with meaningless devices. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device."" - if we have the need to have an unmeasurable amount of possessions, and live for them, then something is definitely wrong...that quote...isn't it from a song? Anyway, it is a great one...

"Until we hit the bottom of the barrel and feel the crevices of life, we will continue to strive for the superficial and praise the folly." - so sad, my friend; so sad...*nodding*...

"And gather experience that will be stored in our karmic memory for the next one and the next one and the next one." - and hopefully one will eventually learn the lesson and end the cycle of rebirth...

"ROFL. That was a great zinger. (unexpected laughter.)" - LOL LOL thanks, darling lol....I knew you would get me ;)...

"Bravo! Well done. Speech. Speech. Speech. Audience goes wild. Standing ovation. Cheering. "Max, Max, Max, Max."" - thank you, my beautiful audience *bowing*!!
Speech: I would like to thank the Light for having inspired me to write this article, I would like thank Mel for suggesting such a great topic...and to my fans, my amazing fans (without whom I would be writing complaint letters to PT - the Portuguese telephone company - until today): a big thank you! And now my assistants will distribute a gift to every one of you present here today: yes, it is a red mustang....enjoy *Max throwing kisses*!
    lol

"Excellent post my dear." - thank you so much :D!

    Bowing Cheers.

  19. Oi Mantecanaut! :D

    Welcome to the MAX!

"oi! disculpe, mas nao me alembro mais como falar e portuguese!" - não tem problema, podes falar em Inglês :)!

"I enjoyed your post, and have sympathy with your viewpoint, that it can work as an antidote to the worst aspects of the modern capitalist world." - why, thank you *bowing*! I have nothing against the capitalist world; in fact I am a sheer capitalist; however, I think that even in capitalism balance should be applied. There is a lot more to the world than just capital.

"Yet, you seemed to talk about material things as just these objects of commercial desire, the trinkets we pine for in our selfish hours." - you said it correctly "you seemed"; because I didn't just talk about the objects of commercial desire, I also spoke of flesh (which is made of cells, yes?), I spoke of the brain...only I addressed the other aspects of matter in a very subtle fashion, since I was answering a question made by one of my most loyal readers, that resulted from last week's post (I suggest that you read that one too) "Who are we?".

"But matter is also the heart of a star, the coffee-swirls of galaxies and most importantly, the community of neurons and dendrites in our brains...the brains that give rise to consciousness." - I do not disagree...

"These brains, hard-wired as they are to seek patterns and meanings and indeed impose them, like to imagine a designed purpose." - I see...so, you defend a purposeless existence? Your brain wishes to ascribe to existence an inexistent simplicity (i.e. we are just here to live, period)? How interesting...

"Are these missions and gods not just an aspect of our self-important egotism?" - it seems to me that your theory is "an aspect of self-important egostism"; because having a mission and believing in God (not gods) is about Love for the Creation and the Creative force (I don't see how this can be viewed as being egotistic).

"Are we unable to consider a universe where matter matters?" - fortunately, most of us are. Matter doesn't matter at all, since when the soul leaves matter, the latter remains behind: it is perishable, meaningless. Whereas the soul returns Home with all the memories of what it did and felt here on earth.

"The atoms that constitute us were forged in stars ; in a way, we are the universe regarding itself, as far as we know unique in that respect ; and however strange or alien to us it may seem, there may be no purpose." - Hmmm...interesting view...and what was the purpose to have been "forged in stars"?

Darling, thank you so much for having dropped by and left such an interesting comment! Please know that you are extremely welcome here :)!

    Cheers

"You know something happened to me in the past few years, I moved away from material things, I only acquire those that are necessities, my taste is not expensive, as long it has purpose." - that is highly commendable of you, darling *clap clap clap*! It is ok to have material things, but we should be modest in acquiring them, not to buy stuff that we do not really need just for the sake of buying it...*nodding*.

"However, the biggest mission now in my life on earth is to raise Matthew, as my mother gave me miracle of life, I am resposible to give back, and it is all going to Matthew, and I hope one day Matthew will do the same to his children or others." - ooohhh, that is so beautiful *tender face*! Yes, the mission of every mother is to raise her children; her gorgeous offspring; so that they can grow up to become decent and honourable human beings. I am sure that Matthew will be a fine man :D!

  21. Dear Max,

We are one of your blog's most loyal group of readers, thus the family asked me to post our comment on this very interesting article.

"Existential Equilibrium" is the test: Can we balance the matter and the spirit? Can we materially prosper without undermining the received instructions given to us when He blew His Spirit into our nostrils?
Can we bring ourselves to understand the joy of the fulfilment of the human mission? Can we use the physical world, with all its implications, to be communed with Him, without neglecting our human fellows?
Can we fairly be each others' angels without overshadowing ourselves?

    Kisses, mom

  22. Hi Max,

"...it felt like a hot drink with 10 spoons of happiness: soothing and extra sweet :D!"

That is sooooo sweet. Great analogy.

"What we want may not always be what we need, indeed. And God never fails to provide us with our needs, our true needs...."

    So true.

"..it is like we have to sweat off our futile wills and wants so that what is right (what is a true need) can tone up and gain the desired shape...."

Exactly, then we can flex for God. :D

"...one can have possessions within reason. For example, what good does it make to have 7 cars (not collection ones) and only drive one or two? Why have the other 6/5? To show off? And in what showing off will increase your value as a human being, as a soul?"

Agreed. What good are seven vehicles to move one vehicle (Soul), it takes Soul travel to a new level. ;D

""We are all just prisoners here of our own device."" - if we have the need to have an unmeasurable amount of possessions, and live for them, then something is definitely wrong...that quote...isn't it from a song? Anyway, it is a great one..."

You caught it. (Impressed) You are very sharp indeed. It is a great lyric from Hotel California by the Eagles. (circa 70's.)

"I knew you would get me ;)..."

    I do.

"Speech: I would like to thank the Light for having inspired me to write this article, I would like thank Mel for suggesting such a great topic...and to my fans, my amazing fans (without whom I would be writing complaint letters to PT - the Portuguese telephone company - until today): a big thank you!"

A speech to end all speeches. Whistles! Cheering! Stomping!

"And now my assistants will distribute a gift to every one of you present here today: yes, it is a red mustang....enjoy"

Oooh, red is my favorite color. Is the mustang convertible? We don't need a car. You have already given us the gift of your Soul.

"Lady A, thank you so much for having shared your amazing intellect with us: you're a gem *bowing*!"

    Thank you for sharing yours.

    Cheering Cheers.

Btw, I like Mom's questions. She is a wise Soul. The apple has not fallen far from the beautiful tree.

  23. Hey Mom :D!

It's good to see you here!!

"We are one of your blog's most loyal group of readers, thus the family asked me to post our comment on this very interesting article." - ok, let's hear it!

""Existential Equilibrium" is the test: Can we balance the matter and the spirit? Can we materially prosper without undermining the received instructions given to us when He blew His Spirit into our nostrils?" - excellent questions! These could easily be the questions that the Creator would ask us before sending us here "Will you pass the test?". To prosper and yet follow the instructions given to us represents a true challenge, because not only we have to remember that He commanded us to perform a task, but also stay true to it when before the seductive aspects of the physical world (and the traps too - i.e. when the mind plays tricks on us). The temptation to forsake His instructions and His path is enormous; for humans tend to neglect the connection to the Source when It doesn't reply to their prayers immediately, and when they fail to grasp the meaning of "God's mysterious ways".

"Can we bring ourselves to understand the joy of the fulfilment of the human mission? Can we use the physical world, with all its implications, to be communed with Him, without neglecting our human fellows?" - Yes, we can - if we look within. Those who seek to understand and feel the joy of fulfilling the human mission are the ones that prevent evil to take over the world. Because when one walks on the right path ("walking the right path" is to follow His Instructions) the Right Order of things, the Balance of things, prevails.
I truly believe that we can use the physical world to be communed with Him without neglecting our human fellows: once again, it is a question of Balance and focus. We must not yield to spiritual blindness (once we do, we get so caught up in our ideals that somehow we will fail to pay attention to the spiritual needs of our human fellows).

"Can we fairly be each others' angels without overshadowing ourselves?" - we can, we must. Only when we love, value and take care of ourselves first (which is the same as Loving the Supreme Essence, since it is in us); we are able to love, value and take care of others (thus recognising the presence of the Supreme Essence in them). When one overshadows himself, he suddenly loses himself in his own somber thoughts and will fail to be there for his human fellow.

"Kisses, mom" - thanks, mom, for having posted the family's analysis of my article (and thanks, family)...your questions reflect your High level of enlightenment; and I feel blessed for keeping society with you guys: I love you all!!

    Cheers

  29. An incisive and provocative post, Max. You make many good points.

I often feel that those who most loudly proclaim their spirituality are really the furthest from it. If they were truly comfortable with their intellectual/spiritual plane, they would not have to overcompensate--which then leads to extremes of, and a bloated tendency to, being judgmental. Being too judgmental leads to DANGEROUS intolerance.

Thank goodness we who love to paint and write or garden, etc., have an anchor to the deeper parts of ourselves!

Great post, Max! I can always count on you to get me thinking....

  30. Hello, you forgot Telescopes on your list of needs, some of us need telescopes, lol.

Excellent thought provolking post again max.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth, now why God did that I'm still working on, but the key thing is he did, all the billions and billions of stars and planets that were created are all physical material, therefore to be a part of these things and enjoy them we have to be physical, there fore we are, make sense?

Maybe a training ground for what is to follow, who knows for sure, if it is we need to balance what is made available to us material wise with our spiritual needs, a very hard thing to do, and you put that point forward nicely.

    Again great post.

  31. There is much to think about here, both in your post and the comments. I've been more in pondering mode these days as I absorb eveyone else thoughts and just let them "simmer" ... so allow me to just say "Thanks" for another provocative topic!

  32. Oh boy Max. You certainly know how to push buttons don't you? I've read several of the comments by your readers...some whom are full of baloney and others who truly get it. Your post my dear is brilliant. It reminds me of the work of Eric Voegelin (1901-1985), a Catholic political philosopher and a professor of Law in the 1930s in Vienna. From what I've read Voegelin felt that the modern-secular world was a revolt against the connection between reason and revelation that characterized Greek philosophy and Christian theology alike. Secular modernity was for him a type of heresy. Voegelin also understood that the concept of fundamental experience, as a basic and primal knowledge, was not empirical but rather metaphysical. It was knowledge through “revelation" in which a human being revealed a transcendent truth beyond the human experience of this world.

He stated ...it was the discovery that the divine ground of reality is somehow "beyond" the world of space and time, that creates the conditions in which the balance of conciousness becomes a requirement for a realistic apprasisal of the human condition. The balance needing to be kept is a existential equilibrium in the face of two sorts of experience: on the one hand, experiences of worldly things, of their truth and reality and lastingness; on the other hand, experiences of human conciousness reaching toward and discovering a divine "beyond" as the ultimate source of worldly things. The difficulty in keeping this equilibrium is the difficulty of not letting the discover of divine frustrate or frighten one to the point that either distorts one's appreciation of or response to finite reality or denies the truth of transcendance."
You've done a marvelous job of workng this into everyday reasoning. Well done.

I also have to disagree about the comment those who most loudly proclaim their spirituality are really the furthest from it.
Saaaay what? Not all of us are Christian rednecks. There is more to faith then writing or gardening.

Anyways got to go dear. Sorry to have taken so much of your time. I'm a busy man.

BTW go to the MW Site and vote ok?

    Take care.

  33. Hi Max!:-) A million thumbs up for this post. brilliant!

Purpose of the physical world? I think it is a part of the whole, a portion of a larger scale that is beyond the capacity of man to define in exact sense.

For me, I must realign the answer to my personal purpose. This world is a given, I realized long before that I must point out out my thoughts on what I can do with, and while I am in, this physical world. I just don't know if that works for everyone. I believe my existence is not for myself alone.

Consider the reason why we have parents, and our parents had one. They were there to prepare the way for us. It must follow that our role would be the same for our children, and the coming generation. Therefore, I must say that the physical world is a means, a tool, for each of us to fulfill the purpose of our existence.

"An incisive and provocative post, Max. You make many good points." - thank you, dear *bowing*!

"Being too judgmental leads to DANGEROUS intolerance." - Hear! Hear! *clap clap clap* now, you have said it all, my friend!

"Thank goodness we who love to paint and write or garden, etc., have an anchor to the deeper parts of ourselves!" - Amen to that :D! When we surrender to the arts (any form of it) we elevate our souls...and reach levels of enlightenment that prevent us from being intolerant.

"Great post, Max! I can always count on you to get me thinking..." - thanks, darling :D! lol I was going to say that about your comment, Lynda!

My dear friend, thanks for this fantastic comment: loved it (it made me think) :D!

  40. Hey JD! :D

"Oh boy Max. You certainly know how to push buttons don't you?" - I do lol? ;D

"Your post my dear is brilliant. Secular modernity was for him a type of heresy." - thanks, darling! I grasp Voegelin's thoughts and I must say that Secular Modernity also shocks me (most of the times, when I am in the mood to allow myself to be shocked)...

"Voegelin also understood that the concept of fundamental experience, as a basic and primal knowledge, was not empirical but rather metaphysical. It was knowledge through “revelation" in which a human being revealed a transcendent truth beyond the human experience of this world." - yes, yes, yes!! But I wonder about his thoughts on the After Life, despite his theories could he envision an After Life or did the Catholic in him put bounderies to his knowledge, preventing him thus from achieving the "transcendent truth"?

I understand perfectly what Voegelin meant: great writing, by the way...thanks for sharing with us :D!

"You've done a marvelous job of workng this into everyday reasoning. Well done." - *bowing*...merci, mon ami!

"I also have to disagree about the comment those who most loudly proclaim their spirituality are really the furthest from it.
Saaaay what? Not all of us are Christian rednecks. There is more to faith then writing or gardening." - lol I think that Lynda meant that sometimes people who devout themselves to faith too much incur the risk of becoming intolerant (and she isn't far from the truth, is she?) through their judgemental views (and this is not the Message). While those who seek enlightenment through the arts (be it painting, writing or gardening or thinking, whatever) hardly succumb to intolerance, since they speak a different language. Thank God that not all people are Christian rednecks, right? But I tell you, that even those are needed in this world...

"Anyways got to go dear. Sorry to have taken so much of your time. I'm a busy man." - No, my time is all yours :)!

"BTW go to the MW Site and vote ok?" - consider it done :D!

JD, an absolutely fine input (I feel honoured): merci beaucoup :D!

  41. Hi Leo :D!

"A million thumbs up for this post. brilliant!" - thank you so much *bowing*!

"Purpose of the physical world? I think it is a part of the whole, a portion of a larger scale that is beyond the capacity of man to define in exact sense." - is it really beyond our capacity to define it or we don't strive to define it? I tend to think that our mind is able of so much more, yet we tend to "laze" around...

"I believe my existence is not for myself alone." - touché! It is not! We are also here to do something for others - let's say that His plan encompasses many things, and one of them is generosity.

"Consider the reason why we have parents, and our parents had one. They were there to prepare the way for us. It must follow that our role would be the same for our children, and the coming generation. Therefore, I must say that the physical world is a means, a tool, for each of us to fulfill the purpose of our existence" - beautiful *clap clap clap*!
