Wisdom Understanding Knowledge

“How blessed is the man who finds wisdom” (Proverbs 3:13)

The image we have of a wise person is: a calm and patient being, capable of offering solutions (inspired by something that transcends us) to problems. And then, when we do not see the reflection of ourselves in this image, we make it seem like wisdom is exclusive to a very few; when it isn’t.
Wisdom is at the reach of everyone: it’s for free. All we have to do is to want to find it, then want to keep it, then want to apply it in life, and finally want to share it with others.

The question that Humanity should ask itself is: if it is for free and all we have to do is want it, then why is it so difficult to be wise?

Because in an era of consumerism what is for free seems to be considered cheap and of poor quality; and apparently people prefer to want to live a life of over-debt, stress, void and chaos…all the things that wisdom does not provide. When Men become wise, their life is invaded by organization, method, calm, order, and fulfilment…What is wisdom, then? It is to observe life and drink it.

“For if you cry for understanding, lift your voice for discernment” (Proverbs 2:3)...

...You will be able to understand life.

It is not enough to observe & intake our existence (wisdom), it is vital that we fully comprehend it if we are to keep some level of sanity and succeed in fulfilling our mission.
Our brain must grasp and assimilate every single detail pertaining to existence and, to our personal universe...otherwise understanding life becomes impossible.

“And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge (...)” (Exodus 31: 3)

Knowledge is the key for everything. The more we know the more we understand; the more we understand the quicker we attain wisdom. Now, there are a few ways of acquiring knowledge on earth (academically, empirically & spiritually), however what they have in common is the danger lurking when we fail to know how to deal with the acquired knowledge: ruin of the Self.

If we go bankrupt in dealing with too much academic knowledge, we incur the risk of becoming serial killers (we know so much that we become vain, start despising and loathing others & experimenting evil); if we fail dealing with too much empirical knowledge, we take the risk of transforming ourselves into arrogant anti-scholars and vain know-it-all; if we are insolvent in dealing with excessive spiritual knowledge we will end up crossing the border of darkness, vainly believe that we are the new messiah and accuse other spiritual groups of being false (showing, thus, a total lack of understanding).

By neglecting the way we deal with knowledge, we invite vanity to take over and shun understanding and wisdom.

Wisdom without understanding and knowledge is useless. What’s the point of observing life if we don’t understand it and ignore its essence?
Understanding without wisdom and knowledge is impossible. If one doesn’t observe life and ignores it, what’s there to be understood?
Knowledge without wisdom and understanding is sheer arrogance and corruption.

Concatenating wisdom, understanding and knowledge is the key to a healthy existence.

  1. Ciao Max,
We do really have lots of distractions and simply we are not allowed to see the global picture. "Blind man who tought how to see..." In our brief journey(lets call it living!) we are compelled to follow the trail. Eventhough, we have our imagination, a wisdom of our own that can last as we can remember.

    Congrats!

  2. Hi Max,
    What a marvelous topic. Kudos!

Life has a way to showing us wisdom in ways we would never imagine. It doesn't have to be in the sage advice of a wise old man. It can be through a child - an event - a realization - the survival of an excruciating experience, etc. It can be anything. In fact, I have seen toddlers who are wiser than adults. LOL.

We ARE blessed to find it in whatever form it presents itself.

"...if it is for free and all we have to do is want it, then why is it so difficult to be wise?"

I am not convinced that we all want it. It is something that can't be packaged and many people want a package that they can see, such as corporeality, money, status, to desire and be desired, ego-driven power, etc.

"Because in an era of consumerism what is for free seems to be considered cheap and of poor quality; and apparently people prefer to want to live a life of over-debt, stress, void and chaos…all the things that wisdom does not provide."

Hear! Hear! Perhaps the human consciousness is predisposed to it and subconsciously desires chaos and stress to give them excuse to be decadent - to smoke their fine Cuban cigars while downing a pint of Absinthe.

"When Men become wise, their life is invaded by organization, method, calm, order, and fulfilment…"

And a countenance of love. Let's not forget that the wise man has ascertained the one aspect that makes him wise - love.

"What is wisdom, then? It is to observe life and drink it."

    Raising my glass.

"Our brain must grasp and assimilate every single detail pertaining to existence and, to our personal universe...otherwise understanding life becomes impossible."

Not to mention our Soul's journey to assimilating this life juxtaposed to former lives.

When we understand that true knowledge is power then we will understand one of the keys (they are many) to our existence.

Max, thank you for taking us on a spiritual journey and showing us that if we strive, we can achieve our place among the stars.

    Wise Cheers!

  3. Hi Max,

When I saw your topic I quickly wrote down my definition of wisdom and then read what you had to say.

My definition: "Wisdom is where intelligence and knowledge meets logic at the intersection of life experience and an open mind."

After reading your article, I stand by my definition.....because they pretty much say the same thing, except for your use of very interesting words.....it's not to often that one hears, never the less uses, a word like "concatenating." To be honest I had to look it up. It's a good word......I will be using it often.

Very though provoking article. Well done.

  4. Max, what do you think of Solomon, who had both wisdom and knowledge, but still something was badly deficient?

One of my favorite verses is 1 Corinthians 8:1 - "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up."

  5. Hello Max,

To get knowledge you need information and legend has it that the lastest is power; now imagine what kind of knowledge one can get if the feeding source is absolutely tainted, twisted and the availability is made according to a certain agenda.
The understanding becomes a field battle for one got to use discernment, or judgment, to separate the good from the bad. Finally through reason and thinking, one reaches wisdom (i.e. the concatenation of wisdom, understanding and knowledge depend very much so upon how one, in life, draws the line that may lead to freedom of mind and soul - and that is one feeling that nobody can take away).

It is a very complex subject thus very difficult to analyse: congratulations!

I know where you are coming from: the manipulation (voluntary or involuntary) prevents us from seeing the big picture, eh?
I wonder what would happen if we decide not to follow the trail...would it demonstrate lack of wisdom or, au contraire, it would prove that we have chosen to attain it?

    "Congrats!"

So true. LOL There are some children that seem to be wiser than adults, true...but then they lack knowledge and understanding (the reason why they are children, after all...they still have a lot of ground to walk, a lot of information to absorb). But I like the way children are more honest, more open to the truth than adults are.

"We ARE blessed to find it in whatever form it presents itself."

    Indeed, darling...indeed.

"I am not convinced that we all want it. It is something that can't be packaged and many people want a package that they can see, such as corporeality, money, status, to desire and be desired, ego-driven power, etc."

"Max, what do you think of Solomon, who had both wisdom and knowledge, but still something was badly deficient?"

I think Solomon was a great man, who did what God intended him to do.
Yes, he had wisdom, knowledge and even understanding (although some would dispute this)...but the question is: did he concatenate the three of them?

"One of my favorite verses is 1 Corinthians 8:1 - "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.""

It is an interesting verse and a clear example of what knowledge alone (without wisdom and understanding) does: it leads to vanity and thus corruption of the mind and soul.

"To get knowledge you need information and legend has it that the latest is power; now imagine what kind of knowledge one can get if the feeding source is absolutely tainted, twisted and the availability is made according to a certain agenda."

That is what they say "Information is power"...so, should we infer that only a few have access to true knowledge?
Anyway, is it ethical to make knowledge available according to a certain agenda? When is it right to render true knowledge available and when is it wrong? Would people be ready for the true knowledge, would they believe in it?

"The understanding becomes a field battle for one got to use discernment, or judgment, to separate the good from the bad."

True. But if the information received is tainted, or twisted, how will our discernment be able to know which one is good or bad? Will it separate the good and bad within the twisted information or will it have to discern what is twisted and what is not?

"Finally through reason and thinking, one reaches wisdom (i.e. the concatenation of wisdom, understanding and knowledge depend very much so upon how one, in life, draws the line that may lead to freedom of mind and soul - and that is one feeling that nobody can take away)."

This is beautiful! And I agree with you.
However, if one of the factors is tainted...won't it influence the others? And if so, can we still reach the freedom of mind and soul? I mean, is this freedom a real one?

"It is a very complex subject thus very difficult to analyse: congratulations!"

So true. We could be here for days discussing this LOL...

I know a lot of intelligent people, I know only a hand full of wise people. The difference being the wise look at things totally different, don't let their egos and feelings rule their decisions, and points of view, and, and always have an open mind.

Open mind you say? yes I did say that, even though they feel they are 100% in the right, they always manage to look at a different point of view, otherwise all you have is a know it all, and it will come across as that to someone who they are trying to be wise to,lol.

I think so. If one wants to attain the highest form of satisfaction, I think it is worth the climb to the summit.

    "*Bowing*! Beautifully put *standing ovation*..."

"...yes, humans do seem to desire chaos and stress; they seem to want to offer an excuse to themselves to (not only being decadent, as you so well said, but also) feel sorry for themselves. Self-pity seems to be a delicious hors-d'oeuvre for some..."

Yes, self-pity is a BIG one. All the energy they spend feeling sorry for themselves they could do something positive. If some people can't get enough positive energy, they will settle for negative energy.

"...does love stem from the same source as Wisdom?"

Good question. I think everything - everything is an offshoot of love in some form. If we have love we can open ourselves up for wisdom. It is a love and understanding of life that creates wisdom. Without love, there is no wisdom. We can survive without wisdom, but we can't survive without love. A lack of love will eventually become an emotional and spiritual tsunami that destroys everything in it's path. The world needs love to contain those pending tsunami's.

  16. WOW...this is quite a heavy topic he he he...What should I say now? Hmmm...well, I once read that if a person thinks he or she is wise, then he or she is really not wise he he he...I guess because wisdom isn't a point or target of reach. It should grow and expand until the day we die, eh?

One thing I've experienced lately, though...the more I see, the more confused I become. Maybe this is the "illness" of today's world...everything is so relative that it makes me wonder which is which.

For example: A might say that B is stingy, but C might also say that A is stingy.

My point here is that it's so easy to point a finger at someone and say that that person is such and such, whereas MAYBE we ourselves have some of that such and such inside us if we're viewed from somebody else's point of view.

Hmmm...now I'm going in circles again hi hi hi hi...anyway, what do you say, Max?

  17. Hey Amelia :D!

"WOW...this is quite a heavy topic he he he...What should I say now? Hmmm...well, I once read that if a person thinks he or she is wise, then he or she is really not wise he he he...I guess because wisdom isn't a point or target of reach. It should grow and expand until the day we die, eh?"

"I tested all this with wisdom, and I said, 'I will be wise,' but it was far from me." (Ecclesiastes 7:23) meaning that wisdom is an on-going acquisition (until we disincarnate). We cannot never be wise in our own opinion, because if we do then vanity takes place (which will push wisdom and understanding away). Our fellow humans will be the judge of that, but mainly God will be the One deciding whether we were/are or not.
This being said, yes...you are right: wisdom should be acquired, grown and expanded until we die.

"One thing I've experienced lately, though...the more I see, the more confused I become. Maybe this is the "illness" of today's world...everything is so relative that it makes me wonder which is which."

Confusion is one of the stages through which humans (all of them with no exception) walk. We need confusion to allow our intuition, our original wisdom (the one of our essence), to clarify things for us - our inner guide will lead the way, if we let it. It is all part of the growth process.
Listen to your inner voice: relativity...is it absolutely real? Or is it the reflection of the limited vision of humans?
On earth everything is an illusion, a lot can be said...but you (in the depths of your spirit) know the Truth :)!

"For example: A might say that B is stingy, but C might also say that A is stingy."

LOL LOL yes, it happens a lot...but you see, what you need to ask is: how well does C know A?
What I am trying to say here is: we have to learn how to look deeper into others (because many times what they present is not who, or what, they are in fact)...we must learn how to see beyond the masks (just ignore the masks, and focus on the nature of A, B and C)....know what I mean?

"My point here is that it's so easy to point a finger at someone and say that that person is such and such, whereas MAYBE we ourselves have some of that such and such inside us if we're viewed from somebody else's point of view."

It happens more often than we know. There is one solution for this (and I know you are Christian, so I think I can share it with you)...to follow the advice of Jesus: "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye." (Luke 6:42)
Jesus knew that we all have aspects that prevent us from judging others...

That is why I leave all the judging to God, Himself...for He is the only perfect One.

Gorgeous, thank you so much for this wonderful conversation...*bowing*! You presented some truly valid arguments (you see, you are not that confused)!

    Cheers

  19. Hello Max!

"So, should we infer that only a few have access to true knowledge?"

No, knowledge is mostly available to all.

"Anyway, is it ethical to make knowledge available according to a certain agenda?"

May not be ethical, per se, but for some users of misleading information, it is justifiable.

"When is it right to render true knowledge available and when is it wrong?"

To render true knowledge available is right at all times. However it can be troublesome (i.e. countries' national security and industrial espionage).

"Would people be ready for the true knowledge, would they believe in it?"

What a conundrum...we would like to believe that it depends on one's mind openness and maturity of spirit.

"But if the information received is tainted, or twisted, how will our discernment be able to know which one is good or bad?"

By methodically questioning the validity of the received information.

"Will it separate the good and bad within the twisted information or will it have to discern what is twisted and what is not?"

Both processes can be used, i.e. within the twisted information one can find out its senselessness.

"However, if one of the factors is tainted...won't it influence the others? And if so, can we still reach the freedom of mind and soul? I mean, is this freedom a real one?"

It might. However, being 3 different factors: Hmmmm....
It's real for those who reach the fortune to concatenate the 3 different factors.

  21. Hello Circulus Ciceronis!

"No, knowledge is mostly available to all."

I hear you...but even though it is available to all, only a few choose to look for it in depth.

"May not be ethical, per se, but for some users of misleading information, it is justifiable."

I agree. This could take us back to the theory that it is not always appropriate to be ethical.

"To render true knowledge available is right at all times. However it can be troublesome (i.e. countries' national security and industrial espionage)."

Again, I agree. Although it is right to render it available, again, it may not be appropriate to do so (since it may bring insecurity, for example)...

"What a conundrum...we would like to believe that it depends on one's mind openness and maturity of spirit."

    I hear you.

"By methodically questioning the validity of the received information."

Aah, but in order to be methodical one must choose to want to make use of reason, of understanding...which many don't (for they rather make use of their emotions - it's easier, I guess).

"Both processes can be used, i.e. within the twisted information one can find out its senselessness."

Indeed...indeed...if one allows (like you said previously) himself to "methodically question the validity of the received information".

"It might. However, being 3 different factors: Hmmmm....
It's real for those who reach the fortune to concatenate the 3 different factors."

  27. Hi Max. About a decade ago I removed the self-made wall that separated wisdom and I from meeting.

I admit my narcissistic personality traits were to blame for putting this soul-destroying barrier up.

This has impacted heavily on those that have held out their love for so long.

A few of these negative traits pop their ugly heads up from time to time but I’m doing my best to rid myself of them.

All I can say now is, for those who fail to pick wisdom up early and run with it, by the time they wake up to themselves it may be too late.

With ever-lasting impressions they have left on others haunting them to the grave.

    Take Care,

Wisdom exists, I agree with you...but not everybody chooses to make use of it.

Swu, once again...you added a special touch to the article, for which I thank you a million :D!

    Cheers

  30. Hey Zhu :D!

"The word wise encompass so many definitions, depending on cultures, education etc."

    You reckon?

"To me, in the 21st century, a wise person is one that know empathy. ommunicating and understand other people better could really benefit the world... if only, if only we tried!"

This is a great point of view...I hadn't thought about it in these terms...

Zhu, thank you so much for your contribution, I loved it! :D

    Cheers

  31. Hi Peter! :D

"About a decade ago I removed the self-made wall that separated wisdom and I from meeting."

This is top: how did you manage to do that?

"I admit my narcissistic personality traits were to blame for putting this soul-destroying barrier up."

    Excellent Self-analysis...

"This has impacted heavily on those that have held out their love for so long."

Perhaps, but because they loved you the heavy impact was offset by their love...wouldn't you think?

"A few of these negative traits pop their ugly heads up from time to time but I’m doing my best to rid myself of them."

Pete, the fact that you acknowledged this helped you already getting rid of them...bit by bit...you are a beautiful human being :)!

"All I can say now is, for those who fail to pick wisdom up early and run with it, by the time they wake up to themselves it may be too late. With ever-lasting impressions they have left on others haunting them to the grave."

This is a very good advice...which I intend to follow *bowing*! And you are right: all we leave behind is the impressions that people have of us, that will last for generations...*nodding*...
We should care more about the print we leave in the world, shouldn't we?

Peter, thank you so much for this awesome, superb, comment! It is always a pleasure to hear you :D!

    Cheers

My reply:"I would like to think so."

  33. Hi Peter!

"My reply: "I saw the errors of my way and did something about it.""

This was very noble of you...and I would bet that this happened when your wisdom joined hands with your understanding and knowledge of yourself. Very interesting...

"My reply:"I would like to think so.""

You may bet your life on it....Love does wonders :D!

    Cheers

  34. Oh Max my friend this is very well, I mean very well written post, I think I wasn't breathing for the last five minutes.

'Wisdom is at the reach of everyone: it’s for free. All we have to do is to want to find it, then want to keep it, then want to apply it in life, and finally want to share it with others.'

Very intresting statement made. Max you are wise. 'share with others' - a vital point, if we don't share it, it does not exists.

Otherwise, I just don't know what else to add to this post, you said it all.

A post written by wise person!

    Anna :)

Oooh, not yet...I am looking for it though :D! True, if wisdom is not shared it doesn't exist....good point!

"Otherwise, I just don't know what else to add to this post, you said it all."

You said more than you think, dear...for which I thank you immensely :D!

"A post written by wise person!"
