"There is no Happiness...

...only happy moments!”

I had enough! Too many social gatherings, too many pseudo-intellectual articles where I have to read and listen to this silly sentence without expressing what I really think of it – enough is enough.

Let’s repeat it together “There is no happiness, only happy moments!” now...what is wrong with this statement?
First, “there is no happiness” an utter fallacy. There is happiness, it is out there: one either pursues it or not (but if one chooses not to go after it, it is improper to affirm that happiness doesn’t exist).
Second, “only happy moments”...this is an admission that there is in fact happiness. For “happy moments” to exist one must be happy at a certain period of time (or several), and if one is happy then; this means that happiness exists (even if one chooses to associate itself with it only for a second, and then go back to be unhappy by choice).

I wonder if some people think, analyse and interpret what they spit onto the air. And what is worse: they make these statements with such propriety, expecting us to fall into utter fascination; to be mesmerised by their brain; repeat their nonsense and spread it like a virus. I observe, I listen, I laugh.
Etiquette forces me into silence. But should I continue to allow it to do so?

We must choose to be happy. But most people have the wrong notion of what being happy means, and then come up with silly antitheses.
Happiness = accepting life as it presents to us.
Happiness is not about smiling all the time; it is not about being effusively festive everyday; it is not about being hurdle-free throughout time and, it is certainly not about having money and possessions.
One may not smile all the time and yet be extremely happy; one may find itself fighting against obstacles from the day it was born until the day it perishes and still be immensely happy; one may not have a dime and still make others wonder how it can be as happy as an Angel.
This represents no mystery. When one understands life, when one comprehends the complexity of existence; when one doesn’t go against the flow of breath; when one accepts the vicissitudes of life as being part of being here; when one accepts oneself then...it is happy all the time.

Buddha said “All is dukkha (suffering, pain)”. At first, this may sound negative; however it isn’t really. This simple sentence is one of the many keys to happiness; for it offers the premise of beingness (we are born – we cry, we suffer; unfulfilled needs – we suffer; frustrations – we suffer; heartbreaks – we suffer; cravings – we suffer; detachment – we suffer; clinging – we suffer; loss – we suffer; misconceptions, misinformation, misleading, untruths, lies – we suffer...) on earth, so that we can avoid adding pain to an already painful existence, and choose being happy to offset it.

Embrace happiness. Don’t reject it. Don’t run away from it. It’s your choice. Your choice.

  1. This scripture is from the Book of Mormon:
"Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy."
    2 Nephi 2:25

God created us with the intent that we would be happy. Our circumstances may not always be the best, but we can still find happiness. You are very right, it is a choice.

  2. Hi Max…

Well I have to say I have never heard this line before…

Immediately I had a passage of Scripture come to mind while reading this eloquent article of yours…Before I quote it I should say the word “blesses” or “blessed” in the original language means “happy, fortunate, blissful”…

1 One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them.

3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 God blesses those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble,
for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,
    for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,
    for they will see God.
9 God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
    - Matthew 5:1-12 NLT

True happiness comes from a life overflowing in genuine relationship with the one true living God…

On being “happy as an Angel” I would say that Fallen Angles are not happy but Holy Angels are…

On Buddha I would say he is just another dead atheist unlike Jesus Who is God and alive to this day and is eternal…

So I agree we should not run from happiness instead we should turn and receive the grace embrace of Jesus…

  10. Hi Max,

(I accidentally had to delete the former comment, browser update. Fortunately I have a copy in my text edit.)

Did we catch you at a bad time? LOL. (just kidding)

As usual - love the image.

This post reminds me of the liar paradox which states, "this sentence is false."

"There is happiness, it is out there: one either pursues it or not (but if one chooses not to go after it, it is improper to affirm that happiness doesn’t exist)."

    Agreed.

I think we can have several happy moments strung together, such as doing something that makes us feel good (whatever it is.)

"Etiquette forces me into silence. But should I continue to allow it to do so?"

One should never be forced into silence if one can offer sound advice, words of encouragement or simply say, shhhhhhh! It's a good time to broach debate isn't it? I agree that happiness is a choice. I think one illusion is that happiness is a constant state, almost like a happy glaze over a face. It's not like that at all. I define it as contentment; a form of satisfaction, i.e., doing a good job, making the right decision, being aware of how to turn those unpleasantries into positive applications.

Do you find that when people are preoccupied with happiness that they are unhappy because they are searching for it rather than looking inside? Acceptance is a big part of happiness. We must accept our lives and muster the courage to change the things we can (if we choose.)

As Albert Camus said, "You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life."

This is one of my favorites by Albert Schweitzer, "Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory."

"Embrace happiness. Don’t reject it. Don’t run away from it. It’s your choice. Your choice."

Hear. Hear. Great post my dear. And whatever you do, be happy!

    Happy Thoughts Cheers!

  11. Max,

You have been reading my article. I have probably written ten or more articles on this very subject: "Happiness is a Choice." It is that simple. One's circumstances does make one happy. It is simple the conscious decision to be happy. It's that simple.

I know that this flies in the face of common belief, but one does not pursue happiness, nor is there such a thing as "I'll be happy when", or "I'll be happy if". Happiness is only "NOW", if one wants it that is.

Happiness is a serious of happy moments and a series of happy moments is happiness.

We are soooooooooooooo on the same page!

Bottom line, "HAPPINESS IS A DECISION!"

Here is my conclusion to a piece that I wrote about a year ago, called "Happiness Refined"

-Happiness and Human Nature are on different paths.
-Happiness should never be connected to a result or a condition.
-Human nature is what drives us; happiness is what sustains us.
-Happiness is as simple as a choice however, a choice is never simple.
-The choice of Happiness comes easier when:
    -It is based in “gratitude.”
-You have the confidence to live in the moment.
    -Happiness is a moral obligation;
-The more happy people there are in the world, the better the world will be.

  12. Max, that is certainly a fun example of nonsense. It sounds like the sort of thing that a naive simpleton says when he wants to make people think he is wise. Certainly I have never done such a thing. OK, maybe once. Certainly not more than twice in my life!

Anyway, I am pathologically happy, except for when I am mourning someone I care about.

  14. I tend to agree: being happy doesn't always come easily, we have to choose to be happy. It takes work, takes optimism, takes a different outlook on life.

    Thank you *bowing*!

"I think we can have several happy moments strung together, such as doing something that makes us feel good (whatever it is.)"

Indeed...but this doesn't mean that there is no happiness. Is it valid to state that happiness doesn't exist?

"One should never be forced into silence if one can offer sound advice, words of encouragement or simply to say, shhhhhhh! It's a good time to broach debate isn't it?"

LOL...you know they say that in a social gathering one must not foster fiery debates, or make others feel uncomfortable. Somehow, these chase me...because fiery debates are always present when I am around LOL...but I do try not to make others feel uncomfortable. However when I hear sentences like the one I shared in this article, I feel like making that person feeling uncomfortable about its silliness; but never do...should I? It is quite an internal debate...

"I agree that happiness is a choice. I think one illusion is that happiness is a constant state, almost like a happy glaze over a face. It's not like that at all. I define it as contentment; a form of satisfaction, i.e., doing a good job, making the right decision, being aware of how to tun those unpleasantries into positive applications."

This is interesting. So, if I told you that I am a happy person all the time, would you say that I live in illusion?

"Do you find that when people are preoccupied with happiness that they are unhappy because they are searching for it rather than looking inside? Acceptance is a big part of happiness. We must accept our lives and muster the courage to change the things we can (if we choose.)"

Unhappy...I don't know; but I think they are letting the opportunity to be happy pass by, simply because they are busy looking for something that is right there, inside them. I agree. I agree.

"As Albert Camus said, "You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.""

    So true...so true.

"This is one of my favorites by Albert Schweitzer, "Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.""

LOL LOL LOL...although a good one, I am not sure I agree with it. If you have a bad memory, this means you want to run away from something (usually bad). Happiness is about accepting life as it is....good or bad.

"Hear. Hear. Great post my dear. And whatever you do, be happy!"

Thank you *bowing*! Oh, I am happy; I really am :D!

Mel, you know I read all your articles about happiness; but if you wrote one recently...I admit I haven't read it yet - but I will.
    I utterly agree with you!

"I know that this flies in the face of common belief, but one does not pursue happiness, nor is there such a thing as "I'll be happy when", or "I'll be happy if". Happiness is only "NOW", if one wants it that is."

Pursuing happiness is exactly that: choosing to be happy NOW!!

"Happiness is a serious of happy moments and a series of happy moments is happiness."

    Absolutely!!!

"-Human nature is what drives us; happiness is what sustains us."

    Absolutely!

"-Happiness is as simple as a choice however, a choice is never simple."

Choice is never simple, or do we make choosing a complex step because we fear the change that comes with it?

I agree with what you said prior to this following sentence:

"-The more happy people there are in the world, the better the world will be."

    So true.

Of course you would say that...[lol]...as you know, to me, Jesus was simply a man who was sent by God to do a special task. I do not acknowledge him as being a god, let alone God.
LOL I know you find these conversations fun... :)

"- Yahweh the LORD, the one true living God, the Triune God of the Bible; Father, Son and Holy Spirit…Its been a awhile since we had this conversation :) After all it is “Holy Week”…."

Buddha believed in a Creator; but buddhism states that this Creator does not intervene in our lives upon prayer. The Creator just lets things run as they may, so that Karma may be fulfilled.

  21. Hello Max,

This was a nice pick for the season!
Happiness is viewed by most as a difficult stage to achieve. Hence those shallow conversations in every social gathering.

The Circulus Ciceronis reached the conclusion that we are happy, for we managed to understand that happiness is nothing else but an intersection of mind and body (i.e. consciousness).
Life isn't a bed of roses for one got to understand timing in order to overcome the inevitable daily hurdles. However once peace is made between understanding and knowledge then happiness is reachable because one is on good terms with life.

    Complimenti, Max *group hug*!

  22. Hi Max,

"Is it valid to state that happiness doesn't exist?"

It is valid to say what one feels. I understand the layers of that statement, but I think happiness does exist. There are awful conditions in the world and in an individual state of mind, but I believe there is always room for happiness. You see happiness IS in those fleeting moments of despair; when we feel safe in fear; when the morning washes away the darkness; when we realize that nothing can harm our Soul no matter what life deals us. There is a comfort knowing that without pain, there is no happiness.

"...fiery debates are always present when I am around..."

I know. I can see you chomping at the bit.

"I do try not to make others feel uncomfortable."

I know that you are sensitive to others. That's a beautiful trait.

"So, if I told you that I am a happy person all the time, would you say that I live in illusion?"

No I would never be so bold to tell a person how they should live, unless what they did affected me personally and what I told them aided a situation between us.

I can understand that we want to be happy all of the time, but I can also see that there are times when we are not supposed to be happy. There is a reason that we have other emotions - to experience them. Happiness is only one emotion. To say that one is happy all the time tells me that one is only experiencing one emotion or one state of mind. Human beings are too complex to only experience one emotion - whichever it is.

I would say that I am a happy person, but there are still situations that don't make me happy, but I choose not to dwell on those. I choose to dwell on happiness.

[Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.]

I just like the humor of it.

"Oh, I am happy; I really am :D!"

I know you are, It shows.

Thanks as always for the fantastic volley.

"No I would never be so bold to tell a person how they should live, unless what they did affected me personally and what I told them aided a situation between us."

    Good answer! :D

"I can understand that we want to be happy all of the time, but I can also see that there are times when we are not supposed to be happy."

True...yet it doesn't mean that happiness doesn't exist.

"There is a reason that we have other emotions - to experience them. Happiness is only one emotion. To say that one is happy all the time tells me that one is only experiencing one emotion or one state of mind. Human beings are too complex to only experience one emotion - whichever it is."

But one can be happy all the time, in a sense that even when sad (or experiencing other emotions) one understands why it needs to experience sadness (or other emotions) - constant happiness lies in the concatenation of understanding and acceptance of life (which in turn is the fusion of mind and flesh)...know what I mean?

"I would say that I am a happy person, but there are still situations that don't make me happy, but I choose not to dwell on those. I choose to dwell on happiness."

That is why I love you, A! :D

"I just like the humor of it."

    LOL...only you!

"I know you are, It shows."

    *Happy face*!

"Thanks as always for the fantastic volley."

It is my pleasure, volley partner :D!

Oh Yeah, We Are Both Happy Cheers

"Happiness...oh well: it is a symbiosis of the body and mind. Once you find it, you will understand the meaning of life!"

  28. Hi Max,

I think we were saying the same thing with different words, but the sentiment is the same. We can be happy if we realize the nuances of happiness. :D

    Thanks for an amazing confab.

    Confab Cheers!

  29. I've never heard that line, either, and I'd be bothered, too, if I hear it again and again and again. If there is no happiness in life, why would I want to live? HE HE HE...

I agree that happiness doesn't mean life without problems and that you can still be happy even when you have problems. :-))))

Happy Easter, Max!!! Btw, when can I finally see the photos? HE HE HE...

  30. Max, I believe that happiness is something we have been building since we were introduced to life. Every way we walked through, every good and bad things we did, every love we made... I mean life!

    Happy Easter, Max!!!!

  31. Crap, I wrote a real long brilliant comment as usual, lol, and my broswer froze... I am not HAPPY. Sure we have to make the choice to be happy, it's up to us, but that is too simplistic.

It is up to us to make the right decisions, the ones that we believe in that may go against the grain of society, which in the short term may create not happiness, but in the long run make us Happy, now if my browser doesn't freeze up and allow me to post this comment I will be very Happy, lol.

  32. At first, when I red the subject of this post, I was protesting. But then, when reading: you are so right!

That's why it is so important to stay in the present and to live, on hour, one day and one moment at the time.

I'm happy I was here and had this happy and thoughtful moment with you - you made my day!

    Happy Easter :-)

  38. Hi Max! Let me repeat it with you “There is no happiness, only happy moments!”

Now for something completely different. Someone highlighted this well known phrase to me recently and seeing it fits the bill for your headlines, I’ll use it here, “What a load of bollocks!”

Yes, I tired of people saying to me that I’m not happy because I haven’t always got a smile on my face, all of the time.

What would they know?… you can’t judge a book by its cover can you?

Inner peace and happiness is just as important! The number of times I’ve encountered false smiles, would be enough to sink a ship!

    Take Care,
    Peter

Nothing! No, you can't, Pete! *nodding*...

"Inner peace and happiness is just as important! The number of times I’ve encountered false smiles, would be enough to sink a ship!"

Yes. Oh, how I know what you mean!

Pete, again, thank you so so much for your input: I loved it :D!!! Don't let this people annoy you!!

  40. Bravo, Max! Another insightful, incisive, and well-written post! You have such a knack for these. :)

I agree: we CHOOSE to be happy!

I am happy every morning when I walk around my house and open the shades to the glowing light of a new day. I'm happy at the richness of life, from the fruit in my bowl to all the music and creativity and intellect floating on the ether (just witness all our blogs...).

I'm happy for my health and for my creature comforts as well, I give thanks. And for the creative drive that helps me over hurdles. And for the love (mutual) of friends and family.

Since happiness is a choice, I feel compassion for those who have already lived many years and still don't realize this. When people blame others for their woes, they should first look at themselves to see what they are putting out there. What we feel deprived of, is often what we with-hold from ourselves!

Until we take responsibility for our own happiness, we will most likely be withholding (approval, love, etc.) from others!

Thanks for a great post, Max. Been missing talking to ya. xxx

Very well said *clap clap clap*! It is true that humans prefer to blame others for their woes rather than looking inwards and take responsibility for their own actions and choices.

"Until we take responsibility for our own happiness, we will most likely be withholding (approval, love, etc.) from others!"

    So true!
