The unsustainable levity of Laughter

I love laughing. Laughter is good: the skin loves it, the hair shines and the spirits thanks you for it.
However there is a proper time to lash the air with risibility (no, this article is not about the etiquette of cachinnating).

There are situations at which people start laughing, that have always thrown me to the land of stupor…

Situation A: a person is walking smoothly; suddenly slips on dog poop (mainly in Europe) or on a wet floor and falls on its butt. Everybody starts laughing without even thinking of the possible outcomes of such incident (to break its coccyx, its leg or to injure its back etc).

Situation B: a lady engages in illicit office behaviour; and in a rush, leaves a certain office to go back to her desk. One of her co-workers realises that her clothes are in disarray and that her skirt is unzipped...instead of discreetly telling her to compose herself, what does this person do? It spreads the word throughout the office, causing the rest of the co-workers to laugh at the lady (thus, humiliating her).

Situation C: someone is out with a group of friends to eat pizza. As they savour the delicious Italian dish, its bowels start dancing to their own beat, causing the individual to release gas (one of those loud ones, that usually have no odour – fortunately, considering the situation). Everybody starts laughing and making a big deal out of something that could happen to anybody. Do they stop to think of the humiliation they’re putting their friend through?
Anyway, what is so funny about flatus? It is quite a natural biological reaction.

Situation D: a kid, in a classroom, is so nervous that he wets himself. Everybody starts laughing at him, and the teacher just lets them. Obviously this academic master has some serious psychological issues, and the kids who laugh at something that could easily occur to them, were obviously bred in homes where parents ignore the concepts of good manners, compassion and respect.

Situation E: a funeral is taking place. People are joined to bid goodbye to a loved one (or even a friend), when someone decides to cachinnate. As much as one tries to understand this odd reaction; one can’t avoid being shocked at the apparent lack of respect for the bereaving ones. Why laugh, why at a time like this?

Some human beings tend to laugh at misery, public humiliation, pain, embarrassment etc.
However we should analyse what is behind the need to yield to risibility in certain situations...is it because some people feel nervous about it; is it because they are immature; is it because they are simply mean, evil, disrespectful; is it because they lack manners or is it because they are a poor excuse for a human being?

I would really like to comprehend...

  1. It's pure immaturity to laugh at another's misfortune. I don't even like comedians who cut themselves down to be funny.

  2. Hi Max,

    Happy laughing Maxday!

Laughter is the food of the soul. I indulge in it everyday. Not only is it good for the skin and nails, but it reduces stress and exercises the facial muscles.

All of the situations that you illustrate can be construed as funny in a very superficial way, but it is never cool to laugh at the expense of someone else. Ridicule and humiliation is no laughing matter.

Films and reality shows tell us to laugh at the expense of others and reality shows especially cast the most unlikely 'stars' for us to laugh at. When American Idol started there was an awful singer that they continued to show so we could laugh at him. He got the last laugh when he got a record contract for 25 thousand dollars and he toured the country 'singing.' Unbeknownst to most people, reality shows are scripted and the audience is manipulated to laugh at people.

People laugh at misfortune all the time. It makes them feel good about themselves by putting others down.

I couldn't end this comment without a joke. Let me see (searching mental files)....ah, I have one for you.

Knock knock. No, no, not that one. Okay. Here's one.

Susie's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months. Things looked grim, but she was by his bedside every single day. One day as he slipped back into consciousness, he motioned for her to come close to him. She pulled the chair close to the bed and leaned her ear close to be able to hear him.

"You know" he whispered, his eyes filling with tears, "You have been with me through all the bad times. When I got fired, you stuck right beside me. When my business went under, there you were. When we lost the house, you were there. When I got shot, you stuck with me. When my health started failing, you were still by my side. And you know what?"

"What, dear?" she asked gently, smiling to herself.

    "I think you're bad luck."

Thanks for sharing a laugh with me. :D

    Laughing Cheers!

  3. Max:

I think you have already answered this question. For some reason, we laugh at what we fear. Seeing others in an uncomfortable situation digs deep into our brains to remind us that we could be there too.

However, I don't believe everyone reacts to these situations with laughter. Many people may feel the impulse to laugh, but they control themselves. This is called good character, and teaching good character is a subject we no longer see in our schools. It's not politically correct. How's that for a laugh.

    Happy trails.

  5. Hello Max,

I get intrigued as well when people give a bad name to laughter.
There are those who are mean and evil, specially kids on school playgrounds. Adults usually dismiss that type of behaviour with the excuse that they're children learning to survive or to be tough.
Unfortunately, the future brings more sorrow than thoughness and, more death than survival.
And to think that everything started with finger-pointing and a laugh in school.

Well, Max...I really don't know why people would use a beautiful gesture to harm others.

    Congrats!

  7. Hi Lady A :D!

    "Happy laughing Maxday!"

    Happy laughing Maxday, darling!

"Laughter is the food of the soul. I indulge in it everyday. Not only is it good for the skin and nails, but it reduces stress and exercises the facial muscles."

Absolutely! LOL how could I forget the nails *nodding*? LOL...you are right!

"All of the situations that you illustrate can be construed as funny in a very superficial way, but it is never cool to laugh at the expense of someone else. Ridicule and humiliation is no laughing matter."

No, it is not cool...specially because the protagonists of such situations feel really bad on their own without having others mocking them. But I also admit that the illustrated situations may raise involuntary laughter...however, what is the root of the involuntary risibility? And could this mean that our mind is not trained enough to have respect as its main impulse?

"Films and reality shows tell us to laugh at the expense of others and reality shows especially cast the most unlikely 'stars' for us to laugh at."

Should people be at the command of films and reality shows? Reason should prevail...but it doesn't, because people want "chiclet-life".

"When American Idol started there was an awful singer that they continued to show so we could laugh at him. He got the last laugh when he got a record contract for 25 thousand dollars and he toured the country 'singing.' Unbeknownst to most people, reality shows are scripted and the audience is manipulated to laugh at people."

The same happened here (in our Idol show): there was this young man who was so terrible (and on top of things he'd argue with the jury) that the show had the country laughing at him (I, personally, thought he was a brilliant comedian who found in the show an opportunity to introduce himself to the market...and guess what? He managed to get a contract with our state-owned cell-phone company and became the face of a huge campaign - who was laughing then?).
    Scripted...so much for reality, eh?

"People laugh at misfortune all the time. It makes them feel good about themselves by putting others down."

    Disgraceful *nodding*...

"I couldn't end this comment without a joke. Let me see (searching mental files)....ah, I have one for you."

    LOL LOL shoot...

"Knock knock. No, no, not that one. Okay. Here's one."

ROFL...you haven't even began and you are making me laugh already LOL LOL...ok, go...

    ""I think you're bad luck.""

LOL LOL LOL that was a good one, told by you!
But imagine if this were true? Poor Susie...of course, if I were her...I would kick his sorry a** so hard that he'd go into coma and only wake up again to sign the divorce papers...ungrateful creep.

"Thanks for sharing a laugh with me. :D"

I agree with you - it is "good character". PC is something that is getting to my wits...it has thrown us into the sea of hypocrisy, into the lake of lack of moral values, and into the river of mental chaos.

  10. Hi Max,

We say it is very difficult to comprehend why people would use the most awkward moments to laugh. It's bizarre, but again human beings are complex, right?
A laughter is like a coin: it has two sides - it can either conquer a soul or kill it.
When people use laughter to ridicule others, they are in fact ridiculing themselves, for an observer can spot all their insecurities.

A bystander who laughs, while watching a bullying episode, is tacitly agreeing with the bully to conceal his fear of being next.
Whom uses laughter to damage others can simply be a moron.

    Max, we loved it: complimenti!

  11. Hello Dux :D!

"There are those who are mean and evil, specially kids on school playgrounds. Adults usually dismiss that type of behaviour with the excuse that they're children learning to survive or to be tough."

But are the kids naturally mean and evil, or are they a reflection of their parent's meanness and evil? Parents that are balanced (really balanced) usually produce balanced and, thus, respectful kids.
Yeah, I have also heard that poor justification...rubbish, if you ask me *nodding*.

"Unfortunately, the future brings more sorrow than thoughness and, more death than survival. And to think that everything started with finger-pointing and a laugh in school."

That is true. A traumatic situation may brew killing urges..for example *nodding*.

"Well, Max...I really don't know why people would use a beautiful gesture to harm others."

    Absolutely...humans are extremely complex.

"A laughter is like a coin: it has two sides - it can either conquer a soul or kill it."

So, true. It can make us feel forever young, but when misused it can transform a beautiful soul into a vindictive murderer.

"When people use laughter to ridicule others, they are in fact ridiculing themselves, for an observer can spot all their insecurities."

    I agree with you.

"A bystander who laughs, while watching a bullying episode, is tacitly agreeing with the bully to conceal his fear of being next."

  13. Max,

Laughing is cathartic. I believe that everyone looks for reasons to laugh. It releases tension and stress. Therefore, unfortunately, laughing comes before reason.

I think it is that simple.

  14. Laughter has power to heal what you do not yet see or discern. It is a powerful mechanism. People underestimate how they are their own deepest, inner healers. What manifests to obstruct your view, to form obstacles in your path, is all there for the purpose of teaching you inner capacities to move beyond it.

  15. Maximus….Darling…and et al…

First I congratulate you on the art…I had noticed your prior usage of its competition created by Caravaggio…I actually prefer the other Baglione master work The Divine Eros Defeats the Earthly Eros. I have had the pleasure of viewing both this and the Caravaggio masterful piece in Berlin at the Gemaldegalerie which is superb.

It appears the image you have chosen speaks volumes…why do people respond in such a way to these kinds of stimuli?

The art portrays a reminiscent imagery of Michael defeating Satan which is intended to invoke the concept of Sacred Love defeating Profane love…this is very fascinating when one considers that this is a response to Caravaggio’s work. What kind of personal love is Baglione applying in his response to Caravaggio? It seems that as he accused Caravaggio of sodomy there was no love lost as they say…

Why do we laugh at the kinds of situations you listed? Let me flip the question…why do we at times weep while happy?

A time to cry and a time to laugh.
    - - Ecclesiastes 3:4a

Elucidating article…nice change up….and appeal to the intellect…

  16. "Laugher is the best medicine"

Yes, it is. But as you pointed out, there are some situations when I wonder why we laugh.

I personally hate anything that embarrass people. Remember the movie, "Borat"? I wasn't offended, no. But I was watching, sometimes laughing, and wondering "how can you do that to people"??

I have never liked the "just for laugh" videos for the same reason. I don't like laughing about someone. I like him/ her to share the joke.

I'm often ironic, sarcastic, but I wont ever let someone being ridiculed.

Remember I was talking about House the other day? Well, even though he is NOT politically correct, I don't mind his jokes and tricks because he is honest and doesn't want to hurt. He is open.

But I can't stand humiliating jokes...

  17. Hi! Title: Men and Flatus - an everyday event. A group of men stand around talking in a small office when one of them lets rip with a whopper. Do they leave the room? A: No, they just snif the air, and then give colourful commentary and points out of ten on the event that just took place. Yes, laughter is the best medicine but in the same breath, not everyone sees the funny side of a bodily function aired amongst friends and workmates.

    Take Care,

    True.

"People underestimate how they are their own deepest, inner healers."

Everything we need is at our own reach...but not all know or even grasp this (perhaps because it is easier to seek for external sources of healing instead of looking within and perceive the power that was bestowed upon us).

"What manifests to obstruct your view, to form obstacles in your path, is all there for the purpose of teaching you inner capacities to move beyond it."

So, you are saying that people should not feel humiliated or embarrassed by others' laughter, but instead learn from those situations and grow (and evolve)?

Liara, thank you ever so much for your wise input :D!

  20. LSus,

    My darling friend... :D!

"First I congratulate you on the art…"

    Thank you *bowing*!

"I had noticed your prior usage of its competition created by Caravaggio…I actually prefer the other Baglione master work The Divine Eros Defeats the Earthly Eros. I have had the pleasure of viewing both this and the Caravaggio masterful piece in Berlin at the Gemaldegalerie which is superb"

Yes, "Amor Vincit Omnia"...a gorgeous painting!
Aaah, I also have the "Divine Eros defeats the Earthly Eros" in store to use it on MAX, one of these days - it is similar to the one I used this week, but it is more...refined. It is a gorgeous artwork.
    You have, have you?

"The art portrays a reminiscent imagery of Michael defeating Satan which is intended to invoke the concept of Sacred Love defeating Profane love…this is very fascinating when one considers that this is a response to Caravaggio’s work. What kind of personal love is Baglione applying in his response to Caravaggio? It seems that as he accused Caravaggio of sodomy there was no love lost as they say…"

LS, it also seems to me that Michael is about to punish cupid for having yielded to Satan (as if for a fraction of time, it had succumbed to temptation...now what kind of temptation would it be? Not to fulfil its mission, or something else?).
Cupid has the face of Caravaggio (although they say it is the Devil who bears his face, perhaps its both...he could be dueling with his own duality at the time)...did you notice?
LOL Caravaggio was the one who was nearly a victim of sodomy (that being that the reason why he fled the Knights Templar's H.Q., in Malta, where he sought refuge after having participated in a duel).
Baglione was his adversary...if I remember well, he kept the woman that Caravaggio wanted for himself.

"Why do we laugh at the kinds of situations you listed? Let me flip the question…why do we at times weep while happy?"

LS, it is not the same thing: we may weep while happy because we feel overwhelmed (in this situation we do not embarrass anyone, we do not humiliate a soul).
When we laugh at the most awkward situations, we may be doing it because we feel overwhelmed as well...however, we are making someone uncomfortable, or embarrassing or even humiliating them.

"A time to cry and a time to laugh.- - Ecclesiastes 3:4a"

I do love this chapter of Ecclesiastes, as you know...but, are you saying that there is a time to make joyous and a time to humiliate?

"Elucidating article…nice change up….and appeal to the intellect…"

Thank you *bowing*! LOL LOL LOL...ah, man...is this because I beseeched you to give me your intellect?

LS, what a magnificent input...your mind still has many areas that remain undiscovered...I am loving it :D! Thank you, my friend!!

"I personally hate anything that embarrass people. Remember the movie, "Borat"? I wasn't offended, no. But I was watching, sometimes laughing, and wondering "how can you do that to people"??"

I detest it as well. Yes, of course...Sacha Cohen makes me laugh to tears with his silly lines *nodding*. Borat is a silly, silly personage *nodding*...I have tried to analyse him, and I think that he tries to explore people's own fears and bigotry (and he does it well, in a silly way).

"I don't like laughing about someone. I like him/ her to share the joke."

    Exactly.

"I'm often ironic, sarcastic, but I wont ever let someone being ridiculed."

I hear you. I used to beat up kids who'd ridicule others in school *nodding*...

"Remember I was talking about House the other day? Well, even though he is NOT politically correct, I don't mind his jokes and tricks because he is honest and doesn't want to hurt. He is open."

Yes, of course I remember. Exactly!! House is sincere in his own bitter way of existing and of co-existing. He means well, and he does help people. You know, Zhu; whenever I watch House I think to myself "This is what God wants: for you to do well, despite your earthly idiosyncrasies" for in the end doing good (i.e. making others feel good, peaceful, happy, comforted etc) is all that matters.

"But I can't stand humiliating jokes..."

    Neither can I...

Zhu, thank you so so much for your input...I love exchanging thoughts with you :D!

Me, I just take it...I don't see any harm in flatus, it doesn't affect me (the way I see it: I release gas, you release gas, he/she releases gas; we release gas, you release gas, they release gas LOL)...me and your Tai Chi instructor are similar on this...

"Max it was fun to converse with you on this post..."
