Yesterday was the International Women’s Day. Each year this day is celebrated with several seminars and forums; with people exchanging emails and text messages extolling female strength, intelligence and power – it is all so beautiful and touching.
On the 8th of March, the accomplishments of the “feminine movement” (N.B: read not “feminist movement” – presently, the biggest foe of the “feminine [i.e. Pro-Femina] movement”) are greatly discussed and praised. It is a fact that women have come a long way (the journey has been harsh yet worthwhile): they now have an academic life, their intellect is valued and respected; they vote; they have professional careers, they contribute to GDP; and so forth...
On this same date, the injustice practised against women is also reminded: equal job, unequal pay; when back home from work they still have to work at home (clean the house, cook, take care of the children etc) [N.B: in the Western world, many men help their spouses however this is not an universal behaviour around the globe]; the lack of general access to top executive positions (men still rule in the Banking and Corporate Universe)...
Yes, the International Women’s Day is really special: women, all over the world, wave the white flag for a day and wish each other “Happy Women’s Day!” with such fervour that one might be led to believe that they actually support each other unconditionally; that they are actually loyal to being a woman; that they are never, ever, prone to side with men against other women and everything that being a real woman stands for.
The 8th of March...the day politicians (both male and female) explain to women the significance of being a woman (she bears life; she’s vital to our economy; women are ½ the world’s population etc); they expose the need to protect these amazing human beings’ rights...Standing ovation [“I’ll vote for this guy/woman!”]...Belief...Hope...Naiveté...
The 9th of March comes and everything is forsaken...see you next year!

International Women's Day? Whose idea was that anyway? If it was a woman's, her mind was clouded; if it was a man's, his conscience was full of guilt. Either way it was a ludicrous and pointless idea.
Everybody knows that being a woman is more than having a vagina, uterus or PMS; obviously we are very much the latter as intelligent/idiot; naive/conniving; wise/imprudent; sensible/unreasonable; resilient/weak; compassionate/wicked; successful/failure; forceful/submissive etc etc. Topping all, our hormones respond unpredictably (amazing, isn't it)?).
Since we got the day I would encourage men not to force their way into the celebrations but to be humbled by it. Furthermore men should pledge themselves to respect their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters otherwise in a next future we will be creating a "Women's Guy Day".

ReplyDeleteHow are you? This is a great event. Everyday that we strive for gender equality is a day for celebration. Women have the power of creation and when we all realize this magnificence then women themselves may support each other and not only views that are popular. Yet with all of our power, beauty and specialness, we still are willing to pose nude for men's magazine. Go figure.

ReplyDeleteI didn't know about this day either. And I am so old, there's is no excuse for my ignorance. Hoorah!
I think it's about time that women came into their full acceptance. Obviously we males need the help.
But please, ladies, as you become CEO's, Presidents, doctors, generals, lawyers, politicians, jet fighter pilots, astronauts, robbers and thieves, killers and dictators, don't think poorly of those among you who want to be with their children, who enjoy making a home, who love their husbands, who worship their children, who build their communities into places where we can live and grow and enjoy those other things in life besides power. Because without motherly love, there will be no future, no matter who hold the cards of power.
Max, just my two cents.

ReplyDeleteThere is something weird about those days; for instance:
Christmas Day - put up with family; eat, drink and for the rest of the year be indifferent.
Chilldren's day - smirk at your kids with a promise of abusing them at your discretion.
Mother's and father's day - call your parents but on the subsequent 364 days abandon them in a nursery home.
Women's day - offer a flower to women of your life with an imaginary card that reads "beware how you breathe for I can crucify you any day, at any time".
So, yes; we'll be seeing you next year!
Having worked in a female dominated job from the age of 13 I have nothing but absolute praise for my female counterparts.

My blessed life as it is now just wouldn't be the same if I gone another way, way back when I experienced first hand the magic of women in and out of the workplace.

LOL LOL *standing ovation* I totally agree with you. I despise those women who choose to have a professional career and then look down on those other women who choose to be mothers, wives and take care of their home; as if being a mom, wife and housewife were a degrading female status *nodding*.
I thought that female liberation and emancipation was about women making their own choices: freely.

You know it! It is not uncommon, in Portugal, to see people bashing on (and neglecting) their parents 364 days/year and then on this particular day they buy their parents a gift and wish them "Happy Mother's/Dad's Day!!!"....it is ridiculous!

Same goes to International Children's Days on Jun 1st. Both days I miss all the time. Thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts, and some disappointing facts which still exists. Hope all is well. As with all holidays that are intended to express or reinforce meanings, to acknowledge and appreciate: they are mere tokens if we do not live up to the expressed values, every other day of the year.
