Public Service

Serving a nation is a privilege. A country can be served under several forms: civil service, military service, secret services and governance.

So, what should it mean to work in these fields? It should translate into taking pride in knowing that one is personally contributing to the administration, defence, control and development of one’s Patria.
It should not be viewed either as a guaranteed life-long job or as an alternative employment when one fails to find a position in the private sector.

Civil servants are usually rude, taking their frustrations out on the public; they display a total lack of professionalism; they disrespectfully ignore the long lines forming behind the counter (as if tax payers [who contribute to their salaries] had all day to wait for their willingness to serve); they abuse their right to engage in work stoppage (one thing is to defend labour rights, another thing is to constantly go on strike for partisan agendas that serve nothing but a nation’s disruption) and they make sure to let us know that they only care about their pay-check at the end of the month/week.

Militaries and secret services’ agents seem to have lost their focus. How come classified documents end up in the hands of journalists? Where is the internal control? Since when does any soldier and/or agent have the liberty to decide to copy top secret information, hand it to the media; thus, jeopardising National Security? Yes, indeed...military and secret services seem to have lost the ability to properly recruit, organise, allocate and control their soldiers/agents.

Governance: the biggest honour of them all. Yet, corruption and personal agendas seem to be the plat du jour. Political leaders who pretend not to know they were elected to serve the people and not themselves; and do not truly serve the interests of their nation (i.e. education and health care for all, free information, free elections, equal access to opportunities; infrastructures, free market, defence and internal security) should be prosecuted for fraud. But this might never happen, since they make the same laws that protect their unethical, shameful, dishonourable, deceitful, disappointing and disrespectful conduct.

Public servants should show more consideration for those they serve: tax payers.

  1. We have a scripture that says, "We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion." (D&C 121:39)

I think sometimes power goes to people's heads. :)

  2. Hey D! :D

Very good scripture, with which I agree.

"I think sometimes power goes to people's head. :)"

True, even if it is the tiniest of powers...yes.

D, thank you a lot for your right on comment :D!

    Cheers

  5. Hi Max,

One of the greatest unresolved mysteries: Why are people who don't like people in public service positions?

"How come classified documents end up in the hands of journalists?"

They go to the highest bidder. Not only does money talk, so does character.

I often wonder why 911 tapes (emergency) end up being broadcast. We don't need those details. Who is making the decisions to let the cat and all of the contents out of the bag?

I think there should be an extra tax on public servants if they fail to serve the public in a compassionate way. Then you would see everyone treating us like we should be treated in the first place. If you can't serve from your heart and soul, then do us a favor and find another job.

    Excellent post my dear.

    Public Cheers!

  6. My dear Max, I've been missing you. Just dropped by to say hello and I'll be back later, hopefully today, to read your post.

    Now, for my bills...

  7. Max:

On this one I have to say yes and no.

I'll start with the no. Although my dearly departed uncle Bob always said that the people who worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles were the dumbest people on earth, and I agree, I have to say also that not all government workers are driftwood. Working quietly behind the scenes, there are millions of pubic servants who work faithfully, and tirelessly,to ensure that the government business is handled with professionalism and with all that we expect. The problem is that no one knows about those folks. I think we should give them a resounding applause.

On the yes. Well, you know how I feel about leaking secret information. I hate it, and I think journalists should be prosecuted for the damage they do. I do not agree that the right of the people is to know everything. However, I do want to know who killed John F. Kennedy, and I want to know the truth about UFO's. LOL.

As to your point about ethics, yes, absolutely, lets have a double portion.

Max: I'm a simple man, I've lived a simple life, and those are my simple words. Keep beating the bushes my friend.

    Happy trails

  9. Tell me about it...

Ottawa is a civil servant city, pretty much everyone here works with or for the federal government. I have seen some truly dedicated people and I must they civil servants work hard.

    Now, France... no comment.

  10. Well said Max. "Public servants should show more consideration for those they serve: tax payers." But they always forget (or refuse to recognize) that this is their main duty. Back here it's election time, oh promises, promises. Once elected, it's back to normal!

Thanks for the visit sweetie. I am fine and I hope you are too.

    Take care. *hugs*

  11. All those lazy, rude and incompetent civil servants can be defined in one sentence: lack of inclination to serve.
Police force, military and secret services when engaging in obscure activities can only be described as men with no honour.
Politicians? Oh please...what a bunch of losers...

    Great post, Max darling!!

  13. Hi Max,

The Establishment is being eroded by insiders: unprofessional civil servants, classless police force, clueless military, dubious secret services and corrupt government. Furthermore, nations are in peril because those elements, in key positions, aren't doing their job: keep the people safe.

    Well done, Max!!

  14. Max! Have you had a run in with the establishment? The title for this post should be, "What gets my goat?"

Now what gets me goat? Well, 1. I got a tax bill last year, the first time ever. 2. Smokes are going up to about $20 3. There's not enough hours in the day. 4. My back is playing up something awful - house renos - yes, I have to take the good with the bad. 5. I want a gas kitchen but my wife wants an electric one. Oops, spilling the beans on the wife, that will do me no good at all.

    Take Care,
    Peter

  17. Hi Lady A :D!

"Why are people who don't like people in public service positions?"

    That is a good question.

"They go to the highest bidder. Not only does money talk, so does character."

    Indeed...

"I often wonder why 911 tapes (emergency) end up being broadcast. We don't need those details. Who is making the decisions to let the cat and all of the contents out of the bag?"

I agree with; we do not need certain details. Again, it is a good question...to which I can only reply: an incompetent, poor excuse for the keeper of national security.

"I think there should be an extra tax on public servants if they fail to serve the public in a compassionate way. Then you would see everyone treating us like we should be treated in the first place. If you can't serve from your heart and soul, then do us a favor and find another job."

LOL LOL LOL extra tax? Now THAT could work! LOL
I agree: if you can't do the job properly - get out!

    "Excellent post my dear."

    Thank you, darling *bowing*.

Lady A, thank you so much for your comment :D!

  19. Hi Swu :D!

"On this one I have to say yes and no."

    Shoot!

"I'll start with the no. Although my dearly departed uncle Bob always said that the people who worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles were the dumbest people on earth, and I agree, I have to say also that not all government workers are driftwood."

True, that is why I used the expression "in general". Thank God there are exceptions - excellent ones.

"Working quietly behind the scenes, there are millions of pubic servants who work faithfully, and tirelessly,to ensure that the government business is handled with professionalism and with all that we expect. The problem is that no one knows about those folks. I think we should give them a resounding applause."

True. *Applauding the professinal civil servants*!!!

"On the yes. Well, you know how I feel about leaking secret information. I hate it, and I think journalists should be prosecuted for the damage they do. I do not agree that the right of the people is to know everything. However, I do want to know who killed John F. Kennedy, and I want to know the truth about UFO's. LOL."

I detest it too. I don't think people have the right to have access to everything either. LOL LOL I hear you!

"Max: I'm a simple man, I've lived a simple life, and those are my simple words. Keep beating the bushes my friend."

A simple yet complex man, that's what you are, man! :D
    I will do my best....LOL...

"Ottawa is a civil servant city, pretty much everyone here works with or for the federal government. I have seen some truly dedicated people and I must they civil servants work hard."

So it's not an urban myth: there are competent civil servants? LOL I am joking...of course there are always exceptions (thank Heavens), but the majority is annoying. I am glad that Ottawa experiences the bliss of having great civil servants :).

    "Now, France... no comment."

LOL LOL oh come on...there is worst (trust me)...

Zhu, thanks a million for your input :D!

    Absolutely.

"Politicians? Oh please...what a bunch of losers..."

Not all of them; but generally speaking: yes...that's what they are when they fail to serve the electorate, but succeed in serving their own agenda.

    "Great post, Max darling!!"

"5. I want a gas kitchen but my wife wants an electric one. Oops, spilling the beans on the wife, that will do me no good at all."

LOL LOL LOL this one is easy to decide: who cooks more often? You or her? The one cooking more often should decide.

Peter, excellent: thanks a million :D!
