Serving a nation is a privilege. A country can be served under several forms: civil service, military service, secret services and governance.
So, what should it mean to work in these fields? It should translate into taking pride in knowing that one is personally contributing to the administration, defence, control and development of one’s Patria.
It should not be viewed either as a guaranteed life-long job or as an alternative employment when one fails to find a position in the private sector.
Civil servants are usually rude, taking their frustrations out on the public; they display a total lack of professionalism; they disrespectfully ignore the long lines forming behind the counter (as if tax payers [who contribute to their salaries] had all day to wait for their willingness to serve); they abuse their right to engage in work stoppage (one thing is to defend labour rights, another thing is to constantly go on strike for partisan agendas that serve nothing but a nation’s disruption) and they make sure to let us know that they only care about their pay-check at the end of the month/week.
Militaries and secret services’ agents seem to have lost their focus. How come classified documents end up in the hands of journalists? Where is the internal control? Since when does any soldier and/or agent have the liberty to decide to copy top secret information, hand it to the media; thus, jeopardising National Security? Yes, indeed...military and secret services seem to have lost the ability to properly recruit, organise, allocate and control their soldiers/agents.
Governance: the biggest honour of them all. Yet, corruption and personal agendas seem to be the plat du jour. Political leaders who pretend not to know they were elected to serve the people and not themselves; and do not truly serve the interests of their nation (i.e. education and health care for all, free information, free elections, equal access to opportunities; infrastructures, free market, defence and internal security) should be prosecuted for fraud. But this might never happen, since they make the same laws that protect their unethical, shameful, dishonourable, deceitful, disappointing and disrespectful conduct.
Public servants should show more consideration for those they serve: tax payers.

Being a servant is the Nobelist of endeavors. Many who feel secure in their positions lose sight that they are there to serve and to serve is one of the highest ways of being. Good post.

They go to the highest bidder. Not only does money talk, so does character.
I often wonder why 911 tapes (emergency) end up being broadcast. We don't need those details. Who is making the decisions to let the cat and all of the contents out of the bag?
I think there should be an extra tax on public servants if they fail to serve the public in a compassionate way. Then you would see everyone treating us like we should be treated in the first place. If you can't serve from your heart and soul, then do us a favor and find another job.

I'll start with the no. Although my dearly departed uncle Bob always said that the people who worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles were the dumbest people on earth, and I agree, I have to say also that not all government workers are driftwood. Working quietly behind the scenes, there are millions of pubic servants who work faithfully, and tirelessly,to ensure that the government business is handled with professionalism and with all that we expect. The problem is that no one knows about those folks. I think we should give them a resounding applause.
On the yes. Well, you know how I feel about leaking secret information. I hate it, and I think journalists should be prosecuted for the damage they do. I do not agree that the right of the people is to know everything. However, I do want to know who killed John F. Kennedy, and I want to know the truth about UFO's. LOL.
As to your point about ethics, yes, absolutely, lets have a double portion.
Max: I'm a simple man, I've lived a simple life, and those are my simple words. Keep beating the bushes my friend.

ReplyDeleteNow what gets me goat? Well, 1. I got a tax bill last year, the first time ever. 2. Smokes are going up to about $20 3. There's not enough hours in the day. 4. My back is playing up something awful - house renos - yes, I have to take the good with the bad. 5. I want a gas kitchen but my wife wants an electric one. Oops, spilling the beans on the wife, that will do me no good at all.

I agree with; we do not need certain details. Again, it is a good question...to which I can only reply: an incompetent, poor excuse for the keeper of national security.

So it's not an urban myth: there are competent civil servants? LOL I am joking...of course there are always exceptions (thank Heavens), but the majority is annoying. I am glad that Ottawa experiences the bliss of having great civil servants :).
