Vanity Fare

Loving oneself is vital if one is to love others; however excessive amour propre is a deviation of character, as loathsome as egocentrism (cousin of narcissism). People should practice beauty of character, of spirit; however many focus so much on the otiose side of life that many times they overlook the reason why they were granted the gift of existence (on earth): to embellish the great canvas which is the world, and to put their inner beauty to work in the service of others.

People who suffer from the Narcissus Syndrome seem such a waste of breath and time.  The fare for this type of vanity: commiseration.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of oneself and one’s own accomplishments. However, there are people who take pride in being boastful. Obviously that simple advice “Never boast” is not taken into account and, thus, they gloat to everybody they know, everybody they meet. And with gloat comes exaggeration: suddenly over-estimation is the name of the game (a pie of truth and lies is baked, and it isn’t even tasty). People begin to dislike these individuals; some will even detest and plot against them...yes, that is the consequence, the fare, of this kind of vanity: gradual ostracism.

The cult to futility is the new religion. People seem to enjoy being futile, shallow, empty. Their selfish id produces vain needs, vain wants, vain desires and vain cravings. Their intellect fabricates vain arguments, vain theories, vain opinions and vain goals. Their mouths vomit vain conversations, vain explanations, vain excuses and vain self-commiseration. The fare of this sort of vanity is: contempt.

A vanity (low table with mirror where one sits while dressing or applying make up) can be an interesting piece of furniture, but even this inanimate object can bring to life the worst in people: it all begins when one sits in front of it to take a glance at one’s appearance, retouching it a bit; then one looks deep into its eyes (thus, taking a walk down the memory lane; which brings to surface all the past disappointments and unsettled business) and hence plotting commences; strategising becomes imperative and vain details begin to be brushed off. The fare of this fine object of vanity is: getting even.

Are people ready to pay the fair vanity fare?

  1. Good writing. There is a line between loving yourself and being in love with yourself to the point where you are blinded by your ego.

  2. I have often pondered the vanity that drove me to master some skill, which later proved useful in helping someone else. At the same time, I looked down on the attitude that made me productive.

If you feel this way why post this for the entire world to read and not just pick up the phone and tell me? ;)

One of your best particles…I mean articles…it was such a cute typo I had to leave it in…

I agree with all of your sentiments…now let me rock the politically correct boat…

Until recently homosexuality was partially seen as a physiological vanity (ugly or negative pride “Narcissus Syndrome”)…The vanity is so obsessive and unhealthy that they seek to sleep etc with themselves…

There you go…something to stir the pot…

I very much enjoyed this post…

Wonderful comment! I so know what you mean, but you know what? If that skill helped someone, then it was not driven by vanity but by generosity. If it were driven by vanity, it would only benefit yourself and not a fellow human...know what I mean?

Loved this comment: thanks, Looney :D!

"If you feel this way why post this for the entire world to read and not just pick up the phone and tell me? ;)"

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL you caught me! LOL...;)

"One of your best particles…I mean articles…it was such a cute typo I had to leave it in…"

LOL well, it is only a particle of what I meant to say LOL LOL...anyway, thank you so much, my friend *bowing*!

"I agree with all of your sentiments…now let me rock the politically correct boat…"

Wow...LS agrees with me (did this really happen? LOL). Please do rock the world...huhein...boat...LOL...

"Until recently homosexuality was partially seen as a physiological vanity (ugly or negative pride “Narcissus Syndrome”)…The vanity is so obsessive and unhealthy that they seek to sleep etc with themselves…"

Oh yes, I have heard that one too (many years ago) and I always found that theory to be a bit off; I mean: they are not sleeping with themselves, are they? The partner is a different person (and I mean it in terms of personality). Now, there are gay people who seek to have relationships with people who look just like them, true...and that could be seen as vanity.

But heterosexuals can also suffer from Narcissus Syndrome in relationships...wouldn't you agree?

"I very much enjoyed this post…"

Thank you, darling: I am glad you did :D!

LS, thanks a million for your comment: loved it :D!

  7. Max:

Good post, and I agree with you, I think. That's is if you're saying that certain people tend to love themselves too much and that they should take a few steps back and re-evaluate what's truly important in life. Things like being kind to your neighbor, charity, and unselfishness.

I know a person who is so in love with themselves so much that literally everything they do or say is one hundred percent egocentric, selfish and insensitive. This person manipulates their surroundings, and everyone in their surroundings, to suit their personal self interest. And the weird part about it is that I don't think they even know how self centered they really are. They are incapable of true self evaluation. And if I know someone like this, in my obscenely limited group of contacts, then their must be millions of these individuals floating around the planet. It's sort of like life on planet earth, we're living unchallengeable proof that life exists throughout the universe.

Max, these subjects are getting too complicated fro me.

    Happy trails.

Thank you *bowing*! Yes, that is also what I am saying: you got it right :D.

*nodding in agreement*...oh yes, there are a lot of people like that. And perhaps that is why the world seems less generous to many, who knows?

"Max, these subjects are getting too complicated fro me."

Nonsense...you are doing just fine. Nevertheless, I will give you a break for a month or so: less philosophy, more politics and life.

Swu, thank you ever so much for your super comment: it was a pleasure (as always) :D!

  9. It is necessary, I think, to keep a healthy balance between being proud and comfortable with oneself and being lucid enough to know how to get better.

I find a lot of French don't know how to be satisfied with what they accomplish. It's always expected to say you can do better, to criticize, to never be good enough. "You have a Phd? Well, why don't you have a better Phd?" :-D You know, it's basically never good enough.

On the other side, I find people to have a strong ego in North America, and a strong sense of self. You must look good (and brag about it), make a lot of money (and mention it), be a working woman yet a loving housewife, be a strong man with money yet sensitive... role models are impossible to achieve yet people boast a lot.

I try to fall in between :-D

  10. Hi Max,

I must say that picture is a sight for sore eyes. Gorgeous, passionate, fluid motion and quite Hellenistic.

An alternate title of this post could have been, "Me, Me, Me." I know so many people who fit that. LOL.

True, loving oneself IS vital and if processed correctly, it can lead to loving others. Unfortunately love rears it's ugly head when it is out of balance.

"...to embellish the great canvas which is the world, and to put their inner beauty to work in the service of others."

    Beautiful.

"People who suffer from the Narcissus Syndrome seem such a waste of breath and time."

    Is this about Kanye West?

We need to have a bonfire of all vanities. Seeing how much we praise the superficial, the insignificant, the "do-we-really-care," is something that continues to baffle me. Today everyone is a celebrity.

In a way, don't you think that people give other people their consent to be vain? In other words, if we didn't play into the vanity/ego of others, then it wouldn't have anywhere to go. We can't be vain without others adding to it. We can pretend that we are the be all and end all, but if no one confirms it, then it's all for show. (If we didn't give Kanye the time of day, perhaps he would become humble?)

Let's exchange vanity for humanity and see what the human heart is really made of.

    Humanity Cheers!

  21. Hi! The song, "You're so vain" by Carly Simon would go well with this post. Yes, the memories of my youth come flooding back when I hear it!

Youth now lost, I still feel as I did twenty years ago. Yes, a half truth perhaps.

Being comfortable with oneself both mentally and physically is what I seek. A young mans game now, I feel my time will soon be up on the bitumen battlefield but I try my hardest to keep in the game. Will vanity keep me from slipping away like so many others.

If justly served by this demon called, "Vanity" I may just hang around long enough to remind those who proclaim, "I wasn't even born when you joined the job" that I can keep pace with the best of them.

    Take Care,
    Peter

I have that song (it is a very good one).
