The Concept of Hysteria

In the XIX century, it was said that hysteria was a mental disease related to the uterus, thus a women’s predicament.

Let’s think a bit more about this interesting concept.
When we speak of hysteria we immediately visualise a dishevelled woman, with devilish red lipstick on, wearing a black mini-skirt, a purple bra; with baby-blue socks sinking into pink slippers; screaming her lungs out at her husband/partner.
We never imagine a guy losing it no matter how pro-femina or feminist we may be.

Men do scream (ask Latin guys). They, too, are hysterical. However when hysteria hits them, instead of visualising an unshaved man wearing nothing but briefs, black socks buried in dusty shoes, holding a beer can in his hand and trying to conceal a serious sexual dysfunction; we tell ourselves that some crazy woman must have caused him to lose his mind.

The concept of hysteria has been gilded. We are not comfortable with men being hysterical (because somehow we are all convinced that males are the keepers of the world’s security and balance) and since political correctness [once again] binds us to appease the feminist fringes; we choose to ignore hysterical manifestations by labelling them as PMS; thus, tacitly agreeing with the XIX century theory.

But I beg to differ: hysteria may well be caused by the X chromosome; the very same chromosome that is carried by each and every human being.

  1. I never really thought of this as a gender specific trait. I think the term "mass hysteria" has always led me to believe it could happen with both genders.

  2. Hi D! :D

I tend not to divide behaviours by gender either, but since scientists insist upon it, I thought a comment should be made.

Your example, "mass hysteria" is a good one to show that it can happen to both men and women...

D, thanks a million for your contribution :D!

    Cheers

  3. I too think of hysteria as a disease that affects all the various genders. At the same time, it may tend to exhibit different symptoms based on the gender.

My interests have been more towards those who would manipulate and exploit hysteria, but that is probably a different post.

  4. Hi Max, as Jamir as sang "virtual insanity"... was it possible to mix hysteria with insanity difering in the point that the last one is thoreticaly permanent?

I think man act more insane, women more hysteric even though our modern societys impels us to it. So what to do? For myself i say: sorry world, i'm just another society side effect! eh eh eh!

  7. Dear Maximus Dramaticus….

The aplomb of this psychological x-ray vision makes one eager to enter the withdrawing room to contemplate the ideas of the Lady…Maximus Dramaticus….brandy and cigar in hand…however as I am missing the smoke, drink and indeed the properly accoutremented withdrawing room (if one were not to consider my modest abode of political conversation http://politicsontheblade.blogspot.com/ ) I shall be thus satisfied by a response in your resplendent comment section…

The mindset is wonderful delineated by the use of those characters of orthodoxy and presupposition…the Roman numerals…I soak in their richness in all they pronounce on this matter…how wonderfully European…it speaks fraudulent spotted moths pinned to tree bark, false gills painted upon human embryos and fake Java man buffoonery…

Hysteria seems to equal coquettish drama and earnest appealing to spectacle…and while this may make entertaining media for some it is in actuality rather drawl and sour in ones own life…it is the Jerry Springer show on steroids…dullsville meets illiterate coma inducing mind numbing tedium…while for the profoundly anti-intellectual, profanity laden, vulgar expressions of the unimaginative modern fake Java man/woman convention it may redact stuffy elitist intelligence it is however the exact representation in devolution of civilization, social cohesion and promotes the productive usurping of wasted brain cells…with fireworks of gender amerisms…

All that aside it is fascinating that you chose this pornographic image of the man and woman masturbating ala leaves and twigs…most disconcerting…it adds a whole new dimension to the term “dirty picture”…

Now please darling, yank your stiletto from the place where triple X marks the spot…but before I leave could you grab me a beer babe?

  9. Max:

As a point of correction, friendly, of course, hysteria was actually associated with sexual maladjustments and anxiety, men and women. This goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks who, in treating hysterics, did so by removing them from their immediate environments, such as their families. And for women suffering from hysteria, Greek physicians often suggested marriage. Yikes! Is that hysterical, or what?

I know, I know, that's not the type of hysteria you were talking about. But I just had to put in my two cents. So please don't get hysterical with me. LOL

    Happy trails.

    That makes sense.

"My interests have been more towards those who would manipulate and exploit hysteria, but that is probably a different post."

This is an utterly interesting theme per se; and like you said: a whole different post (to which I shall dedicate some thought: thanks for the idea, man).

Looney, thanks a million for this awesome comment :D.

"(..) Max, as Jamir as sang "virtual insanity"... was it possible to mix hysteria with insanity difering in the point that the last one is thoreticaly permanent?"

Anything is possible when forming a theory (that's all I can answer for now).

"I think man act more insane, women more hysteric even though our modern societys impels us to it. So what to do? For myself i say: sorry world, i'm just another society side effect! eh eh eh!"

LOL LOL I do not agree with you, but I loved your input lol :D.
I think people act insane when they act insane and they are hysterical when they get hysterical regardless their gender.

Ah, G...I missed your comments already; thank you for having dropped by, man :D!

"I'm thinking: Hysteria or angre behaviour - isn't a question of you're own perseption?"

It goes beyond perception. Hysteria is the hyperbolism of angry behaviour - a behaviour so exaggeratedly angry that rationality and reason get lost.

Renny, thank you so much for your input :D.

ROFL...oh no, worry not...I have never been hysterical (and according to Greeks I may never experience hysteria because I'm married now...oh my LOL LOL).

  18. Hmmm...interesting food for thought...I think in a way I've come to think of hysteria more often in a female form screaming...but if a male is screaming (in a usually deeper tone of voice), what do I call it then? Perhaps "losing control" instead of "being hysterical". Does that mean I've been "brainwashed"? He he he...

  19. Hi Max,

For some reason I looked at the title of this post and immediately thought of LS.

Wikepedia describes Female hysteria as, "Women....suffering from...a wide array of symptoms including faintness, nervousness, insomnia, fluid retention, heaviness in abdomen, muscle spasm, shortness of breath, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex, and "a tendency to cause trouble."

    I describe it as PMS.

"When we speak of hysteria we immediately visualise a dishevelled woman, with devilish red lipstick on, wearing a black mini-skirt, a purple bra; with baby-blue socks sinking into pink slippers.."

Is this Cyndi Lauper in the 1980's?

I think some men tend to hide their hysteria (except LS) because they don't want to seem like they have lost "control." God forbid if they should ever lose control or have a real emotion - those are only for women. I love men who are passionate and a little hysterical, (like LS.) At least we know they are alive. As long as they don't abuse it.

I think hysteria is all a conspiracy. Also according to Wiki, "Since ancient times women considered to be suffering from hysteria would sometimes undergo "pelvic massage" — manual stimulation of the genitals by the doctor until the patient experienced "hysterical paroxysm."

See what I mean? How do we know doctors just didn't make this up to "have their way" with women? Nowadays we can't trust anything to be correct, even if it has been researched, it can still be wrong.

    Great post my dear friend.

    Wasn't LS a good sport?

    Passionate Cheers!

LOL LOL ah, Holy Honesty!! However, I must confirm what you already know: yes, you (and all of us) have been brainwashed lol ;).

  22. Hi Lady A :D!

"For some reason I looked at the title of this post and immediately thought of LS."

    ROFL...did you?

"Wikepedia describes Female hysteria as, "Women....suffering from...a wide array of symptoms including faintness, nervousness, insomnia, fluid retention, heaviness in abdomen, muscle spasm, shortness of breath, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex, and "a tendency to cause trouble.""

    See what I mean?

    "I describe it as PMS."

No doubt ^5! I think women should control PMS though...it makes them look like a bunch of nutters *nodding*.

"Is this Cyndi Lauper in the 1980's?"

ROFL...I wish. Cyndi Lauper had more class (in a crazy kind of way).

"I think some men tend to hide their hysteria (except LS) because they don't want to seem like they have lost "control." God forbid if they should ever lose control or have a real emotion - those are only for women. I love men who are passionate and a little hysterical, (like LS.) At least we know they are alive. LOL but LS is an exception - he is a model of a man (he is not afraid of showing his emotions, his hysteria...he is that sure of himself).
Society (i.e. women) taught men that they have to hide their emotions and be tough all the time...it hasn't done them much good though: they are crazier and crazier. I suggest they let it all out (just like LS).

"I think hysteria is all a conspiracy. Also according to Wiki, "Since ancient times women considered to be suffering from hysteria would sometimes undergo "pelvic massage" — manual stimulation of the genitals by the doctor until the patient experienced "hysterical paroxysm." "

Pelvic massage!? LOL LOL LOL talking about a hidden agenda...

"See what I mean? How do we know doctors just didn't make this up to "have their way" with women? Nowadays we can't trust anything to be correct, even if it has been researched, it can still be wrong."

I see what you mean *nodding*. Once again science messed up, girl. Research means nothing: if you go into research with a pre-conceived idea, the result of your work will be biased for sure. As much as I love science I do not bet all my money on it.

    "Great post my dear friend."

    Thank you *bowing*.

    "Wasn't LS a good sport?"

LOL he was...although he is profoundly shocked at the image used on this post...

Lady A, thank you ever so much for this superb comment: I adored it :D.

  28. We rather view hysteria more as a "malaise" than a disease because its manifestation resembles that of a cry for help.
Is it a women's illness? We seriously doubt it because guys, as well, display hysterical behaviour; however only women are branded as such for once they get started they reveal propensity to non-stop yapping and whether ignored or not they go wild.

    Max, the article is hysterical...
