A study has been made, in the U.K, proving that raising boys is €2,500 cheaper than raising girls. And as years go by daughters become more and more expensive.
So, what is this study supposed to mean exactly? It is supposed to take us back to the dark ages, when having girls was considered bad luck, or perhaps it is supposed to say that Indians (that have aborted 10 Million baby girls) and the Chinese (that have killed millions of baby girls and now face a social problem) are correct when they value their male progeny more?
Perhaps it’s none of the above (perhaps I am being paranoid). Maybe this study serves to back up some GM (genetic manipulation) programme. A study like this comes out, parents’ emotions get stirred; those who cannot have children through natural conception (and wish not to adopt) rush into a fertility clinic to not only exercise their Nazi politics (x eye colour; y skin complexion; t hair colour etc) but also to make gender selection. Clinics make a bundle of money, parents practice their vanity, society suffers from a huge decrease in females (and thus incubators); future males will wage civil wars in order to get women and a solution is offered to appease tensions: artificial cells that generate androids – problem solved.
I’m so grateful that in Africa, at least, women are valued for their reproductive gift (if for nothing else). When a man wants a woman, he must pay “lobolo” (some kind of gift in form of cattle, pecuniary means and traditional cloth) to her family. He must show how valuable she is to him.
In Nampula (Northern Mozambique) women are the natural heirs of the land. Men can only own land (bestowed by their wife) after they contribute to reproduction and prove they can grow crops.
Daughters may be €2,500 more expensive, but since women are the keepers of Mankind, I am more than willing to investment in them.

ReplyDeleteI don't think I this study rings true for my own life. I have one daughter and three sons. My daughter is oldest, so we have paid for things for her that the boys haven't had to experience yet. She has already graduated from college, and we paid for much of that expense. But now my son, child #2 is of college age, so we are paying for his. I don't think we will pay any more for him than we did for her.
Maybe the expense comes in the price of girl's clothing? I probably pay more for food for the boys. I can't figure out what would be more expensive for my daughter than for my boys.
Interesting! I wonder what coast more in raising daughters. Either way, kids are kids and they are the future... worth investing in them.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time with the mindset that says children are a commodity. Maybe it would be understandable in subsistence level Africa, but Europe? It seems that the richer people are, the more calculative they are. The better they can take care of children, the more likely they are to abort them.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to understand how anyone can kill babies, male or female. I would think that females would be revered in all societies, not only for their reproductive value, but because they are nurturers, negotiators, and problem-solvers. Not to mention, hard workers.

Sadly, women are still terribly abused in many countries...

I don't think this study is true for anyone's life. It is one of those ridiculous studies where money is wasted.

It depends on the girl: some girls like (and can afford) design clothes; some others like (or can only afford) non-design clothes. Besides boys' clothing is also expensive nowadays. LOL LOL LOL boys do eat a lot, true!

It's petty. I am telling you, in poorer countries they keep having children (as we well know) despite their poverty and they do not think about money to raise them. On this side of world, where wealth abounds, people are beginning to see children as a commodity (disgusting) instead of viewing them as the future, as an investment in the improvement of our society.

We are just before another useless study for future parents won't rush to the bank and open a special savings account to raise a baby girl; and it's meaningless for being the X chromosome faster than the y one, it means that Fair Trade, World Trade Organization and alike will continue to prosper upon baby girls' rocketing costs.

Poor Aisha! Yes, I did see it *nodding*. It is awful what women go through in that side of the world. Like I always says "as long as there is one woman on earth being abused, disrespected or neglected, the fight isn't over!". It is extremely sad and infuriating at the same time *nodding*.
In India there are also cases of mother-in-laws abusing and murdering their daughter-in-laws (all because of money): dreadful!
We still got a long way to go and stupid studies like this one don't help.

Hi Max! If anyone thinks it's cheap bringing up children, be they male or female, they'd have to be bonkers.
ReplyDeleteThey cost an arm and a leg to raise, school and cater for as they live out their adult lives.
There's no end to it and just when you think you're on top, up comes another dilemma or reason to splash out more hard earned money.
But having said that, I, we, wouldn't have it any other way.
Accused of being there for our three sons far too often when it comes to opening our wallets, we don't give two hoots what others say and if we had our lives over again, we'd do the same thing all over again.
Spoilt are they? No, not really. When we do help it's for the most important things in their lives.
Why do we do it? Because they are the most important things in our lives.
