A real politician is a civil servant. A real politician serves the interests of the nation and not its own. A real politician is a human being, therefore not perfect; meaning that it will make a lot of mistakes and a ton of bad decisions; but is willing to admit to its errors, learn from them, correct them and avoid repeating the bad past.
A real politician understands that politics means accountability, not impunity; it signifies enriching the nation (on all levels: economic, social and spiritually), not bankrupting it; it translates into making hard choices and odd alliances if it serves the best interests of the country and not the interests of groups sharing the same political ethnicity; it reflects construction and progress, not destruction and digress.
Nowadays, real politicians are extremely rare, for either the political class is a bunch of leeches aiming at getting rich(er) at the expense of tax payers; or potential real politicians surround themselves by incompetent advisors who, having their own agenda, tread upon their good political will and make them look incapable.
Finding a real politician among Right Wingers is extremely hard. Rightists often sound like latent fascists; they seem not to understand that the world has changed and that the Right wing speech and stance must evolve, while maintaining the conservative principles that define The Right: God, Nation and Family.
There is rarely a real politician in the Left Wing as well. Leftists often sound like quiescent authoritarians; they seem not to grasp that the world has changed; that speaking of communism in the XXI century (a proven failed system) is démodé and against human nature; that the Left Wing philosophy must be restructured, since it has an important task in politics: to counter-balance the excesses of the Right.
Radical (far-Right and far-Left) Wings do not produce real politicians whatsoever; for they are dormant autocrats; and if people wish to wake up the monster (i.e. voting for them) they will sentence democracies to death penalty.
I see a political light at the end of the tunnel, though, when I look at politicians like:
- PM Binyamin Netanyahu: he bears all the exquisite ingredients to be a real politician, but he must seize the present opportunity to make the world understand that Israel shall not be the Isaac at the hands of the Western Abraham, waiting for some kind of whim to dictate whether it should be sacrificed or spared. If he’s not capable of making westerners understand Israel’s point view, he’ll have failed once again.
- President Barack Obama: he holds the finest ingredients needed to produce a real politician; however he must review some of his liberal foreign policies and be careful enough not to perpetuate the decayed image of politics by saying one thing today and another tomorrow.

You lost me when you said Barack Obama is a good politician. He has no understanding of international diplomacy. He is a socialist at heart, and is trying to make our democratic nation socialist. In my opinion, he is the worst president we have ever had. He has TRIPLED our national debt by handing out free money as part of his "economic stimulus package". This did NOT help our economy, but only made it so that our children will have an even bigger debt facing them. He has a very low approval rating, even with liberals at present.
ReplyDeleteYes Max, we need great statesmen/women and diplomats who live by a will to the Common Good and have the flexibility to compromise and negotiate wisely and in good faith. Yet they also need to be smart and proactive.
ReplyDeleteExtremism and polarities lead only to stalemate at best, and at worst, to destruction.
My love to you.
Hi D! :D
ReplyDelete"You lost me when you said Barack Obama is a good politician."
Exercise your right to freedom of expression, girl...
"He has no understanding of international diplomacy."
I thought he had State Secretary Clinton, Envoy George Mitchell and all the US diplomats around the world for that task. If President Obama is to do all the work by himself, and understand everything and every field...what are the other secretaries and advisors paid for?
"He is a socialist at heart, and is trying to make our democratic nation socialist."
D, then I'm afraid you have little understanding of what socialism really is; for he is not a socialist (by definition). President Obama is, as far as his policies go, a liberal (and not even the European concept of a liberal).
"He has TRIPLED our national debt by handing out free money as part of his "economic stimulus package"."
I understand that the stimulus package may not have worked as planned; but from what I've read things would've gone worse if the stimulus hadn't been put in effect. Plus, the argument that your national debt is solely a democratic feat is sheer demagoguery: President Bush's administration has a lot of responsibility on this matter - and this cannot be overlooked.
D, excellent comment: thank you so much :D.
Cheers
Hi Lynda :D!

So true, darling, so true *bowing*...
"Extremism and polarities lead only to stalemate at best, and at worst, to destruction."
I totally agree with you on this one.
"My love to you."
Much love to you, my friend :D!
Lynda, thank you so much for your input :D!
Cheers
I like the painting your chose to illustrate the post.
ReplyDeleteI worked in politics and while I met some great people whose only motivation was to change the world, for a lot of others, power was the goal. Not money, pure power. Scary.
Hey Zhu :D!
ReplyDeleteThanks, girl: I am glad you liked it *bowing*!
"I worked in politics and while I met some great people whose only motivation was to change the world, for a lot of others, power was the goal. Not money, pure power. Scary."
You are right: it is scary (and shameful) nodding*.
Zhu, thank you so much for your great comment :D!
Cheers
Maximus Entertainus….
ReplyDeleteWhat can one say about this presentation? Where to begin?
I am not sure what The Dog image has to do with this theme?
Political parties are private organizations that manage to wrestle control for periods of time. Yes politicians are elected civil servants but they are also part of a private organization (no matter the party).
As I have said before elections and democracy replace civil war so if they manage to do that alone it seems profitable…
MAX: “A real politician understands that politics means accountability, not impunity; it signifies enriching the nation (on all levels: economic, social and spiritually), not bankrupting it;”
- - “Bankrupting” Oh that must be a shot at Obama the guy who is transferring wealth out of the US…
There are good and bad among all delineations of politics…however not all ideas or ideals are created equal.
Your definition of Right Winger may fit with the European model but are out of place here in North America… Do you see a difference between conservative and right winger?
The far left and far right meet to become fascists…they are out to take care of their elite group and themselves.
Typically the majority difference between the right and the left is the right tends to individuality and self responsibility and the left tends towards government (communal concerns decided by an elite group) wealth transfers from those who are smarter, work harder, are more educated or more fortunate to those the left deems less so yet more deserving.
The right sees the individual citizen as the answer and the left sees the elite group representing the community (government) as the answer.
I would say it is a balancing act, the right is correct that capitalism is our best form of wealth development so far. Now here is the crux…the vast majority of people I know on the right donate more time and money (percent of what they have) to charity than those on the left (including those who have money on the left). However the right has the reputation for being heartless…Those I know on the left think the government should decide where my money goes…We need government to live in community (democracy is not anarchy) but how much government authority must be exerted over the individual citizen and where does self responsibility come in?
Why should my tax dollars go to gender reassignment surgery or abortion? Why should a corporation be allowed to cut down every tree in sight? Why should the government pick and choose which companies it will help and hurt? How much of my money should be taken away from me and given to the elite group of politicians to decide who they will give my money to? Should they be able to take 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% 50%...of my money or more?
When a government tries to do too much it is part of the problem, when citizens do not take up their community and private responsibilities they are part of the problem…
As for Obama…he is pitiful…
Hi Delirious…
ReplyDeleteYou and I are in agreement…however do you think there may be another president almost as bad as Obama?
Real politicians are extremely rare especially here in the Philippines. :(
ReplyDeleteHow are you sweetie? Hope you had a wonderful weekend.
*hugs*
