Analysis: The Relationship between Power and Sex

The seat of Power is warm and comfortable. It also offers the sensation of omnipotence. Once a human takes that appealing and much coveted seat; he/she must be aware of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of sitting on such tempting chair. If any of you dreams of Power, it is advisable to bear in mind that it is a very lofty and lonely place. Moreover, it whitens your hair (or whatever it’s left of it).

Humans like to be in Power (under its many shapes and sizes) and, thus, they’ll do anything to get there: pretend to uphold family values; conceal their true sexual orientation; make promises they can’t keep; step on people’s toes; obliterate ethics, law and order...you name it...Power justifies the means.

After all and any means have been used to reach the ends; the powerful individual realises he’s all alone: he trusts no one (lest someone overthrows him); he bears the responsibility of constant success (since he’ll be the only one to be accountable for failure) and he invests a huge amount of time and energy on strategising (a process that, consequently, forces one to shut the world out).

By now, you have all realised how stressing and straining being powerful can be; so you must ask: what keeps these people sane and in touch with reality? The answer to this question would be healthy disciplines that would connect them to their inner-Self, such as:

  • Meditation and breathing techniques
  • Introspection and Self-Examination
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi Chuan
  • Capoeira, Karaté, Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga, Kung Fu etc

However, some Powerful humans seem to go back to the raw, animalistic, side of life: dirty sex. Not copulation with their spouses, but crude and rude sex with prostitutes and Love Kleptomaniacs.
One would think that healthy disciplines would help the Powerful Ones to cope with all the harshness and aggressiveness entailing Power; but instead some of these people opt by debauchery, depravity, deceit and dishonour.

Being Powerful demands abusing one’s Reason and freezing emotions; therefore being deceitful, dishonourable and having subversive sex may be a form of thawing those same emotions. It makes sense...But it also makes sense to say that Power may not have anything to do with it. Many Powerful people cope with their heavy burden through healthy disciplines; however some already were/are sexually disturbed and then make use of Power to get sex, and subdue, as a way to display the extension of their acquired Power.

So, what is the relationship between Power and Sex? Immaturity.

  1. Hi Max,

I believe that people who are attracted to the "seat of power" fall into two categories:
    1. Those who see injustice, corruption and wrong doing and feel that they can make a difference in this world.
    2. Those who are dissatisfied with their lives and feel that power will make all the difference.

Unfortunately, many of those in category one become seduced by the power. These people become affected by the wheeling and dealing that must go on in order to attain the power (they make a deal with the devil) and become no better than those in category two.

Those in category two, since they were dissatisfied at the beginning soon realize that this dissatisfaction does no go away. They do not realize that they still take themselves with them on the power journey.

Basic dissatisfaction usually runs through all aspects of their lives, including their relationship with their spouse. In their quest for satisfaction they believe, having attained the power, they are above both man's laws and moral laws.

Since man is basically a hunter-seeker, and a sexual being, and being "above the law" they seek and hunt to satisfy their needs. This combination can take them to the places that you mention.

You mention self disciplines as a potential answer......unless they have these disciplines before seeking power; they are not likely to practice them once they have achieved their power.

The answer lies with us. We have to be sure that the people we put in power are of the first category and will not be seduced by the process. And since we are all flawed, I think that this is a losing battle.

I do believe that "Immaturity" is a key factor. As one matures, one should try and find satisfaction in things that surround him.

Satisfaction and the desire to make the world a better place are not mutually exclusive. They can coexist.

  2. Have you noticed that either the narcissist becomes powerful or the powerful become narcissists. It does not restrict itself to illegitimate sex only. Exercising power takes many forms and sexual misconduct is just one of them. For the powerful, self gratification of any kind is all that matters.

  3. Hi Mel :D!

"Unfortunately, many of those in category one become seduced by the power. Brilliantly put! Unfortunately that is exactly what happens....and then sometimes they do realise their "mistake" but by then it often is too late to go back.
    About the category II: Agreed.

"Basic dissatisfaction usually runs through all aspects of their lives, including their relationship with their spouse. In their quest for satisfaction they believe, having attained the power, they are above both man's laws and moral laws."

*Nodding in agreement*...do you think they marry their spouses for certain purposes and then regret it?

"Since man is basically a hunter-seeker, and a sexual being, and being "above the law" they seek and hunt to satisfy their needs. This combination can take them to the places that you mention."

It is a question of channeling correctly those forms of energy. A powerful person can be a hunter-seeker and thus hunt-seek for profitable or fulfilling businesses or hobbies; a sexual being can be sexual with his/her spouse or partner; and if they want to feel like they want to be above the law...they should play videos games (those violent ones) LOL...*nodding*.

"You mention self disciplines as a potential answer......unless they have these disciplines before seeking power; they are not likely to practice them once they have achieved their power."

I heard a friend saying that many of them do practice some of the self-disciplines however they do not go deep on the meaning of those disciplines - it is like they only practice them for the sake of practicing them (know what I mean?)....

"The answer lies with us. We have to be sure that the people we put in power are of the first category and will not be seduced by the process. And since we are all flawed, I think that this is a losing battle."

You are right...and besides, how can we know for sure that the character of the people we put in power is good? People seeking power can be the biggest pretenders and they wear many masks. So, it makes our job a bit more difficult.

"I do believe that "Immaturity" is a key factor. As one matures, one should try and find satisfaction in things that surround him."

    Exactly! :D

"Satisfaction and the desire to make the world a better place are not mutually exclusive. They can coexist."

    I agree with you.

Mel, an excellent excellent comment; what a gift: thank you so so much for the honour *bowing*!
It's good to have you and your wisdom back :D.

"Have you noticed that either the narcissist becomes powerful or the powerful become narcissists."

    Indeed, and then comes prepotence...

"It does not restrict itself to illegitimate sex only. Exercising power takes many forms and sexual misconduct is just one of them. For the powerful, self gratification of any kind is all that matters."

    Right. Yes...

Rummy, as always, a fantastic comment: thank you ever so much :D!

  5. I do yoga but I still enjoy the rest :-D

There is no illegitimate sex in my book as long as both parts are enjoying it. That say, there is a constant of insecure people trying to assert their power in bed.

  6. Hi Zhu :D!

"I do yoga but I still enjoy the rest :-D"

    LOL you do well.

"There is no illegitimate sex in my book as long as both parts are enjoying it. That say, there is a constant of insecure people trying to assert their power in bed."

It becomes illegitimate sex when you vow to your spouse, or even partner, that you will be faithful and then break that vow behind their back by sleeping around. However, if the couple agrees on having a "broad relationship" or any other type of sexual agreement...then it is not illegitimate - although many would disagree (with valid arguments).
About the insecure people: it is one way to see it, indeed.

Zhu Zhu, thank you so much for your input, girl :D!

  7. Max,

Yes, immaturity is the relationship between Power and sex.
A popular teenager, in High School, uses his popularity to have sex with all the cheerleaders, because he is immature and doesn't know how to deal with his popularity.
Then we have the fashion photographer who uses his position to sleep with the models; just like corporate directors who use their position of power to harrass personal assistants and even have sex with them...they are all immature. They think that without these positions they wouldn't succeed in getting sexual encounters, and thus they hide behind, and use, their apparent power.

I could go deeper on this complex problem, however time shortage prevents me from it :(.

Nevertheless, I congratulate you for addressing this theme.

  9. I am speechless Max...much as I wish to write more comments, what can I say? Well said!

Now this made me think if I would encourage any of my family or myself even to try politics..I find it always disgusting...as you say power is a lofty but lonely place...and I say too, as I often hear, 'it is lonely at the top'...and that has been proven time and again...myself a witness too since i work in a political environment!

Thanks for sharing Max...I may no longer want to join politics in the near future!

I am in a new blog now, some problem with my blogspot so i shifted to wordpress. Pardon me, but I shared this post of yours on FB...:)

  10. Bravo Max, for another cogent post.

I've always believed that those in most fervent pursuit of power are the most empty souls. If their hearts were full, they would sing instead of coveting.

By contrast, the kind of power that is well advised, IMHO, is power over one's self!

  11. You have your analysis spot on and the best part was the techniques which could help get out of this problem. Its about being faithful to yourself first and then to others. If you yourself doesn't have the control over your mind then anyone can overwhelm you any moment. Its not just the sex part, if their is no control over mind, its like a stray bull on the streets which may harm a few people in the beginning but ultimately it will be overpowered and become the reason of its own destruction.

Indeed, indeed. When we read these blunt examples we realise how silly these people can be...*nodding*.

It's ok, your input has already provided us with a good imagery of this kind of behaviour :).

Politics is not bad, certain politicians make it bad.

"Thanks for sharing Max...I may no longer want to join politics in the near future!"

You are most welcome *bowing*. LOL no, don't do that...perhaps you can change things around, specially because you have that less positive perspective. Think about it :).

  18. Meditation, breathing techniques, Yoga and self-examination – to name just a few? I was wondering what Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden got up to while they were digging a hole for themselves.

Now, if Muammar Gaddafi and Ali Abdullah Saleh aren't careful they'll end up in the same boat!

I'm not the first to say this and I certainly won't be the last – Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Power and sex? You either have it or you don't.

    Take Care,

  19. Hi Max,

What has LS have you doing now?

The word power is an interesting one because those who have it are controlled by others, so in that sense, I think power is a group effort.

Power is very taxing and dangerous. It's usually the people who have no idea of the string pullers that cause the strings to be pulled.

It's intriguing that you draw the correlation between power and sex. Do you think that those in power also think they are powerful in bed? (or in all aspects of their lives)

Sex is a powerful potion and when you add ego to it, it can be explosive (no pun intended).

I bet LS put you up to this to inflate his ego. The word verification today is "heart." Perfect. You have to have heart in anything to make it worthwhile. Power may attract certain people, but behind closed doors, it soon fizzles.

    Keep up the good work.

    Powerful Cheers!

It has been the trend, but I am not sure this has to be an absolute.

  22. Hi Lady A :D!

"What has LS have you doing now?"

LOL this time it was me who put LS through this theme...I confess.

"The word power is an interesting one because those who have it are controlled by others, so in that sense, I think power is a group effort."

Very well said and so true.

"Power is very taxing and dangerous. It's usually the people who have no idea of the string pullers that cause the strings to be pulled."

    lol indeed, indeed....

"It's intriguing that you draw the correlation between power and sex. Do you think that those in power also think they are powerful in bed? (or in all aspects of their lives)"

I do think that..and obviously they live in total illusion...

"Sex is a powerful potion and when you add ego to it, it can be explosive (no pun intended)."

LOL LOL LOL not intended, but what a powerful pun it is...

"I bet LS put you up to this to inflate his ego. The word verification today is "heart." Perfect. You have to have heart in anything to make it worthwhile. Power may attract certain people, but behind closed doors, it soon fizzles."

Sorry, this time you lost the bet: LS was a victim this time (well, he is hardly a victim and we know how much he loves sex, but this time he is innocent - I swear). Really? Now that word verification must be a sign ;).
    True, darling, so true...

    "Keep up the good work."

    Thank you *bowing*...

Lady A, a fab and intellectually sexy comment for which I thank you a million times :D.
