Distribution of white bread by Otto van Veen |
Last weekend, the world witnessed a series of protests organised by the “Occupy X” Movement: Wall Street, Ottawa, Berlin, London, Madrid, Rome, Tokyo and so forth. It is said that people participating in these protests are mad about social & financial injustice, about not having jobs or money.
Then Portugal had its version of the movement, “The Indignants” (to emulate the Spanish “Los Indignados”), organised by the Far-Left (in a poor attempt to regain the votes they lost in the legislatives and in Madeira [where it lost all representatives, in the elections, last week]). This version was so poor - in rhetoric - that international News Networks didn’t even mention the event.
Lisbon indignados hit the streets to shout “Sack Passos Coelhos [the Portuguese PM elected last June]!!” and “No more austerity measures!” plus “You are condemning us to poverty!”...The indignants did not go to the streets to demand, from the government, details on how exactly the previous socialist government caused a €3,4Bn budget deviation right under the MPs’ nose. The participants of “Occupy Lisbon” did not demand to know how the previous government could have spent 70% of the 2011 debt ceiling by June, of the current year. No, the so-called indignants were too occupied protecting their iPhone, flat TV, Levi’s, Nikes, clubbing and marijuana purchase power – that is the only explanation to the amount of irrationality, and lack of political wit, I witnessed this past weekend.
Berlin occupiers said, “Capitalism is a Religion”. And they were so mad about capitalism and social injustice that they danced the occupation away.
London occupiers are also mad about everything that is going on and they decided to clash with the police in order to express their discontentment toward the establishment.
Rome occupiers were peacefully expressing their worries about the economic and social crisis when leftist thugs hijacked their movement to disturb peace and spread destruction.
Wall Street occupation is a protest against capitalism disguised as social preoccupation, but I think if it were intended to express a sincere social-political discontentment, they’d all march to, and occupy, Washington. Ottawa occupiers claim to be in solidarity to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement (read: emulate the Americans)...
I acknowledge the democratic right to peaceful protests, specially when politicians are not serving the People. However, what we have been seeing lately is not a war against politicians and their bad service; it is certainly not a demand for jobs; it is rather a war against banks, corporations and rich people.
I have a question: are there really no jobs or people are not willing to do just any job? I ask this because in Portugal there are several industries that see themselves forced to “import” workers because the Portuguese do not want to fill those positions. I can imagine the same happening in other countries.
Another question: are these people really angry at capitalism or are they furious because deep down they’ve realised that re-distribution of national wealth doesn’t work?
Occupy Movements say “It's time to put people before profits & communities before corporations.” then why don’t they all occupy themselves by volunteering?
They must prove they put people and communities first. Lead by example.

There are some zomby flicks on the television these days. Considering Occupy X in the light of these, I see that both groups are compelled to attack anything that has life left in it. What makes zombies more tolerable, however, is that they don't leave piles everywhere nor do they turn the city center into a latrine.
ReplyDeleteHi Looney :D!
ReplyDelete"There are some zomby flicks on the television these days."
You are not the first person mentioning this fact. A young lady (on twitter) was commenting one of these Social-oriented Movements (inviting people to join) and she said she was more interested in watching the first episode of Deadman Walking - or something like that - on TV lol *nodding*...
"Considering Occupy X in the light of these, I see that both groups are compelled to attack anything that has life left in it."
And that is why I look at the whole thing with suspicion.
"What makes zombies more tolerable, however, is that they don't leave piles everywhere nor do they turn the city center into a latrine."
LOL I hear you!
Looney, thank you for your awesome comment :D.
Cheers
Hi Max,
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if they are sure what they are really marching for or against. Perhaps it's their inability to ascertain the real enemy; ennui. I have seen hypocrites in the crowd; people with trust funds, celebrities, college students who want to be part of "the crowd" and people who are paid to participate. Last I heard, they raised 300k. If they can raise that kind of money, why don't they do something positive like clean up the parks, streets, etc. I do find the term "social justice" a curious one. Achievement should never be penalized. Great piece my friend.
Max, I sat in front of the tv for 5 minutes to follow the portuguese protests (last weekend, before I flipped the channel): I have never heard so much garbage in my life! There was this little woman saying that she wanted the prime minister out; then one journalist asked her what were the alternatives and she said "3 alternatives: Passos Coelho out, Passos Coelho out, Passos Coelho out!"...I am not sure whether she was stuttering or her thought-process lagged; because that was an idiotic answer.
ReplyDeleteAs for Occupy Wall Street: did I see Demi Moore's latest husband there (I never remember his name; I only remember Bruce Willis')? I thought he was fighting for a worthy cause like CNN's Freedom Project - freeing women from slavery.
I don't see the point for these protests and I think the participants of such movements are people enjoying the good weather. They do not have a proper plan, they do not have a proper purpose and their motto is ridiculous.
Yes, prove us you really care about people and community.
Hi Lady A :D!
ReplyDelete"I am not sure if they are sure what they are really marching for or against. Perhaps it's their inability to ascertain the real enemy; ennui."
Ennui...yes, that is one excellent way to describe what is happening in this people's lives.
"I have seen hypocrites in the crowd; people with trust funds, celebrities, college students who want to be part of "the crowd" and people who are paid to participate. Last I heard, they raised 300k. *nodding in agreement* and what are these hypocrites doing there exactly? What is their agenda?
300k, seriously? They should use it to help the "people and the communities" they claim to love and protect so much.
"I do find the term "social justice" a curious one."
So do I, my darling, so do I.
"Achievement should never be penalized. Great piece my friend."
Totally agreed. Thank you for your generosity *bowing*.
Lady A, superb comment: thank you ever so much :D.
Cheers
Hi Ana :D!

Unfortunately, that is the level of political unawareness the Portuguese society is experiencing: Portugal has a long way to go; however I think this new government is helping the Portuguese to re-educate themselves.
"As for Occupy Wall Street: did I see Demi Moore's latest husband there (I never remember his name; I only remember Bruce Willis')? I thought he was fighting for a worthy cause like CNN's Freedom Project - freeing women from slavery."
Yes, you probably saw Mr. Ashton Kuchter (I didn't understand his presence there either...in a suit and all). *No Comments*...
"I don't see the point for these protests and I think the participants of such movements are people enjoying the good weather. They do not have a proper plan, they do not have a proper purpose and their motto is ridiculous."
LOL LOL let's see how they'll behave when winter comes...
I must agree that their priorities do not seem to be straight. I just hope President Obama doesn't make the mistake to go there and identify himself with the Movement: it wouldn't be smart (in my opinion).
"Yes, prove us you really care about people and community."
Something tell me that is not what they care about...
Ana, wonderful comment: thank you so so much :D.
Cheers
Olá, Max!
ReplyDeleteYes, the Portuguese version of the "Occupy" Movement was sad - I think that even protesters need to change the way they protest and more importantly they should be more informed and not allow political parties to manipulate them.
The international versions of the movement are less sad but unfortunately I haven't grasped what they are all about. I'd say they are wasting time instead of helping the elderly and children of their community - only this is not so interesting, is it?
There are plenty of jobs out there, but people nowadays are too important to execute them (after all they do have a college degree). I always admired the Americans: college graduates worked at restaurants, they drove cabs, they worked in construction etc and that is why that country is a great country. Suggest that to a Portuguese! He/she will call you names: to hell with the country's development, I want to feel important! They are all peasants, Max!
Tchau
Max dear, great topic to talk about.
ReplyDeleteHere in Canada we either poor or very rich, a little of mid class. It is disappointing, because if you see two rich people living in 5 or 10 thousand sq feet house, running all the heating, cooling and water, I see waste. And then you have people who cannot even put food on the table.
You cannot blame all rich because some of them they earned hard way, but there are some that get paid to be CEOs just for image and getting paid millions. This is mainly in hour health care system. The gaps are very unreasonable.
Now you are right too about the foreign employees. Some hire them over domestic ones because they know they can pay them less and they will do the work. The locals don't want to work for pennies. The foreigners know how to survive on the low income, where the locals are sometimes big spenders even if they don't have money. I even noticed with teenagers, soon as school is little hard they drop, soon as work is little hard they quit. I think the bottom line is that some of us are becoming lazy. I don't know for fact, may be always was like that.
This is a big topic Max, this is only icing on the cake. I see both sides at fault.
So, how are you doing girl. I have not been here for a while again. I am getting involved more in our town and issues, beauty and everything else, still photographic journey. Blogging is one thing, and may be I will start some local website. I want to be close to home when Matthew goes to school (next year, and they are starting full time for 4 years old, sucks and I don't like it ...) so working from home is my option.
Oh and I really like this layout you chose for your website, your background is really cool.
Hugs and kisses as always ... hope you are well.
Anna :)
Olá Celeste :D!
ReplyDelete"I think that even protesters need to change the way they protest and more importantly they should be more informed and not allow political parties to manipulate them."
Excellent point.
"I'd say they are wasting time instead of helping the elderly and children of their community - only this is not so interesting, is it?"
Would it have the same media coverage?

lol I got your point.
Celeste, thank you so much for your outstanding input :D.

This happens everywhere, I'm afraid, darling...
"(...) The gaps are very unreasonable."
Equality is not that equal. The same way freedom is not that free...
"The foreigners know how to survive on the low income, where the locals are sometimes big spenders even if they don't have money."
Excellent point.

So, so true. In the past, people worked harder: the harder it got, the harder they'd work. But today, people are all about facility...they seem to want freedom from difficulty: the easier the better. And this behaviour is sad.
The good news is: this economic crisis is showing us that life is not about facility and therefore our society will eventually be re-educated.
"This is a big topic Max, this is only icing on the cake. I see both sides at fault."
Yes, there could be so much to discuss about this...and this topic could lead us to discuss a plethora of issues that could help us to view this crisis with different eyes.
"So, how are you doing girl. I have not been here for a while again."
I am doing great, thank you :D. I'm still blogging (as you can see): the world is giving me plenty to talk about LOL ;). I still find human beings fascinating, darling :D!
How're YOU?
"I am getting involved more in our town and issues, beauty and everything else, still photographic journey. Blogging is one thing, and may be I will start some local website. You do well: I wish Occupier Xs would do the same - you are a true example :D.
Awwwe, mummy Anna, Matthew eventually had to leave the nest :)...you'll see that it will do him well to socialise with other kids.
Working from Home is superb and it would be great if all mums had that option.
"Oh and I really like this layout you chose for your website, your background is really cool."
Thank you. It still has some issues (this template is still in development), but Blogger is working on it. So, if you (and others) found some difficulties please bear with me (well, mainly Blogger lol) *Bowing*.
What I like the most about this new experience is the fact that it forced me to finally work with Google Reader lol *nodding*...
"Hugs and kisses as always ... hope you are well."
Huge hug and big kiss: I am fabulous :D.
Anna, thank you so much for your superb comment and your friendship :D. It was great seeing you here.
Cheers
I think I will add another perspective to it...simply put these protesting guys/parties are folks who has to keep their cadres charged and keep their so called social organisations afloat. Next is the chaps who are really on the streets are guys who are some-off the laziest beings on earth and who just love to make their living out of the forced donations to their party/organisation coffers and their would be some folks who would just be intimidated to come to the streets...To me change is good but their should be a method to the madness before coming out on the streets and keep your loudspeakers wailing. A lie told ten times ultimately becomes a truth, so people are very easy to fool and create an artificial mass hysteria, but the so called self-styled guardians of our society should realise that they also had their times under the sun/moon whatever and they are no better at it. Its just as if once you form a government you get the ultimate right to loot the nations wealth and fool its citizens....I just couldn't agree more with your thoughts Max.
ReplyDeleteFirst off. You've gone for the dynamic template, looks good, very different and pleasing while I use FireFox. IE9 is a different matter, yes, I got lumbered with that with the almost new computer. I'm too set in my ways to change or is it I'm afraid to change? Whatever!
ReplyDeleteNow for the matter at hand. Our lot got carted away yesterday. Warned for eight days to move, they refused to budge. Of course they screamed blue murder when taken away - a common tactic to seek support and push their cause.
No one I know gives two hoots about them nor have I seen any support for them in the media.
Anyway, wishing you and your readers the very best.
PS I posted my comment and got sent to never never land and another comment form. Blogger what are you doing?
Here goes a second time? Touch wood you get it this time :)(:
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Kalyan :D!

I hear you, mate!
"Next is the chaps who are really on the streets are guys who are some-off the laziest beings on earth and who just love to make their living out of the forced donations to their party/organisation coffers and their would be some folks who would just be intimidated to come to the streets..."
Good point!
"To me change is good but their should be a method to the madness before coming out on the streets and keep your loudspeakers wailing."
Right? That seems to be the issue: I don't see any method and this apparent lack of a methodic strategy leads me to think of the word Political Manipulation, instead of social concern...
"A lie told ten times ultimately becomes a truth, so people are very easy to fool and create an artificial mass hysteria, but the so called self-styled guardians of our society should realise that they also had their times under the sun/moon whatever and they are no better at it."
Preach it, brother!
"Its just as if once you form a government you get the ultimate right to loot the nations wealth and fool its citizens..."
*Standing ovation*...
Kalyan, this is an outstanding comment for which I thank you a million times (loved it) :D!
Cheers, mate

Dynamic Views is awesome but it still presents some issues - Blogger swears to be working on them, and today I saw some improvements in the comment section (it is starting to look more like yours) however the old problem [publishing comments] remains unresolved for now...let's wait and see.
You know what they say about change, don't you? The only way to cope it is to help creating it ;).
"Now for the matter at hand. Our lot got carted away yesterday. Warned for eight days to move, they refused to budge."
Go Aussies! At least you guys did something about it, which is quite commendable. They could exercise their democratic rights for 8 days, beyond that it can be viewed as disturbing public order.
"Of course they screamed blue murder when taken away - a common tactic to seek support and push their cause."
lol it is the same everywhere *nodding*. It is an obsolete tactic...it doesn't work any longer.
"No one I know gives two hoots about them nor have I seen any support for them in the media."
Seriously? Unfortunately, the media here gave too much attention to European/American Occupiers...
"Anyway, wishing you and your readers the very best."
Thank you, and I wish you the very best as well :D.
"PS I posted my comment and got sent to never never land and another comment form. Blogger what are you doing?"
That is one issue Blogger hasn't solved yet...
"Here goes a second time? Touch wood you get it this time :)(:"
*Touching wood* it worked!! :)
Peter, thank you so much for your input (loved it), but thank a million for your patience and for having insisted upon posting the comment - I appreciate it :D.
Cheers, mate
