Sanctity of Life & Desecration of Death

The Cemetery Entrance by Caspar David Friedrich

What a week! Since last Tuesday, a lot has happened: a political promise has been fulfilled, the fulfilment of another political promise has been announced and a criminal authoritarian has been killed.

The Sanctity of Life

Gilad Shalit was released a week ago (on the 18th of October). PM Netanyahu had vowed to bring him home and he did. He put Gilad’s life in first place, period. But what interests me the most, right now, is the symbolism behind the whole event: Gilad Shalit was released on a Tuesday – in Judaism, Tuesdays are auspicious days. Gilad was freed from captivity on the 18th – the number 18, in Judaism, is the numeric value of Chai (Life). And if we add October to the equation, the 10th month of the Solar calendar; we will have the number 10 that corresponds to the Wheel = moving forward, new beginnings, expansion, big break-through. Is it all a big “coincidence”?

In Judaism, Life is more valuable than gold, silver or even diamonds; simply because Life was created by El-Shaddai and therefore it is every Jew’s duty to respect, value and sanctify it.

President Obama announced, last week, that the US will withdraw all of its soldiers from Iraq until the end of the year. Now, many theories have arisen to justify this decision: some say it is because the Iraqis, inspired by the Iranians, will not extend US soldiers’ immunity from prosecution; others say it is to save money the US so desperately needs; others utter the move is intended to draw liberal votes...I tend to think it is something more complex than that, however I’ll go in a different direction.

President Obama’s announcement can be viewed as a way of Life preservation. Violence is growing in Iraq and since this country seems to be associating itself with Iran, it would be most likely that violence would soon turn toward US soldiers; therefore it could be said the US is anticipating itself and preserving the Life of those who fight to keep the lives of not only US citizens, but of all citizens in the world, safe.

The Desecration of Death

Muammar Gaddafi is dead. I won’t pretend that I feel sorry for his demise, because I do not. However, I do not rejoice over it either.

Gaddafi was a murderous authoritarian who bitterly failed his people. The NTC claims to be different than the previous regime, but when the time came to prove their inclination for the rule of law, they failed by allowing their “soldiers” to execute Gaddafi on the same day they captured him. I did not enjoy witnessing them treating Gaddafi’s dead body with that amount of disrespect. By doing so, the NTC proved to have little respect for Life and even less for Death.

The Libyan utter disrespect for a dead body reminded me of the disrespect the Congolese showed for the dead body of Laurent Kabila (in 2001); the lack of respect the Angolans showed for the corpse of Jonas Savimbi (in 2002); and the disrespect the Muslims in the Middle East show when they use dead bodies for propaganda purposes.

G-d exhaled life into flesh and it became Man. G-d inhaled life from flesh and it became Soul. Thus, Life and Death are extremely sacred...

  1. Hmm...I thought I already typed my comment. lol

This is an interesting post. I like your new blog format too. There is a catch with making comments though.

What I wanted to say is that I feel Obama's motives are purely political. The war in Iraq has always been a Republican war, being started by George Bush. The Democrats have always opposed the war in Iraq, and only support the war in Afghanistan. I would like to think that Obama's motives were pure, but unfortunately, I think it's all about the vote.

  2. Hi D! :D

"Hmm...I thought I already typed my comment. lol"

You were caught in the Blogger Web lol....

    "This is an interesting post."

    Thank you *bowing*...

"I like your new blog format too. There is a catch with making comments though."

Thanks, I am glad you like it. I know and I apologise for it: Blogger is still working on it (I have reported this bug quite a few times now), so please bear with me and (mostly) Blogger *bowing*.

In politics, your input is a logical explanation. Nevertheless, although I supported the invasion I must admit that Iraq was an expensive war and the American (+ the Alliance) presence lasted for too long...

D, thank you ever so much for your input (loved it) :D. Furthermore, thanks for your patience (with the comment bug)!

    Cheers

  3. Max, I congratulate PM Netanyahu for his courage: he had to make a tough decision to bring Gilad Shalit home and he did it. I understand that many Israeli families, who saw their relatives being killed by those released last week, may be angry but what about Gilad's parents? Didn't they deserve to have their child back?
Yes, as Jews we value life and if there's one Jew out there in the hands of our enemies Israel and all Jews must never rest until our brother/sister is back in the heart of our community - B'ezrat Hashem!

Muslims have no respect for dead bodies. What libyans did to Kadhafi was shameful, disrespectful and contemptible - for all it's worth, Kadhafi was their leader (a terrible one, neverthless) their representative and probably many in the NTC belonged to his social-political circle, so respect was in order.

  4. Hi Max,

    Happy Tuesday/Wednesday my friend.

I think you would have a stylish and brilliant career as a preacher. You nailed it on all counts. I don't know how you can keep up with world politics the way you do. At least I know who to come to when I need to know what happened and who did it.

I agree with Delirious on Obama. He is definitely a politician and severely puppetized.

    Preacher Max Cheers!

  6. Did my last comment go through? Hmmm. But the new blog layout is quite dynamic!

What I was saying is I can't see how any of the changes will be for the better. Iraq will probably go downhill after a US pullout, while Libya is unlikely to become better than it was. Just have to trust that God has a good plan that will be worked out.

"I congratulate PM Netanyahu for his courage: he had to make a tough decision to bring Gilad Shalit home and he did it"

    Agreed.

"I understand that many Israeli families, who saw their relatives being killed by those released last week, may be angry but what about Gilad's parents? Didn't they deserve to have their child back?"

It must be terrible to watch the murderer who scythed your relative's life walking in freedom; but Gilad's parents had the right to get their son back as well, yes.

"Yes, as Jews we value life and if there's one Jew out there in the hands of our enemies Israel and all Jews must never rest until our brother/sister is back in the heart of our community - B'ezrat Hashem!"

    Amen!

"Muslims have no respect for dead bodies."

It is shocking to see how they parade dead bodies and display wounded people as if they were nothing...and for what? For propaganda sake *nodding*.

"What libyans did to Kadhafi was shameful, disrespectful and contemptible - for all it's worth, Kadhafi was their leader (a terrible one, neverthless) their representative and probably many in the NTC belonged to his social-political circle, so respect was in order."

    Well said!

Ana, thank you so much for your superb input :D.

  8. Hi Lady A :D!

    "Happy Tuesday/Wednesday my friend."

    Happy Wed, darling :D!

lol why, thank you *bowing*. It's all part of the job, girl. LOL it's a deal ;)...

"I agree with Delirious on Obama. He is definitely a politician and severely puppetized."

Being a politician is good but he needs to be a sharp politician (he is intellectual, we know that; but in politics intellectuality must be set aside sometimes, know what I mean?)...

Lady A, thank you ever so much for your fab comment and for your generosity :D.

    Thankful Cheers

  10. Hi Looney :D!

"Did my last comment go through? Hmmm. But the new blog layout is quite dynamic!"

If you had previously left a comment on this article: no, it didn't go through (there is a bug in the comment section that Blogger is still solving).
It is, isn't it? I am loving it; although it is still in development...but little by little Blogger is solving all the issues - I just hope they solve the comment section once and for all.

"What I was saying is I can't see how any of the changes will be for the better. Iraq will probably go downhill after a US pullout, while Libya is unlikely to become better than it was. Just have to trust that God has a good plan that will be worked out."

In my opinion, Iraq didn't take advantage of the US presence there as it should have. Moreover, I am not sure if insisting upon having the US there wasn't part of a political strategy to weaken the US economy - let's face it, Iraq cost a lot of money to the US (+/- $1Tn). See, how Al-Maliki ran to Ahmadinejad's arms as soon as he could? It's suspicious...
About Libya, I agree: I am not sure it will be better than it was either - I do not like the signs the NTC has been sending...

Looney, thank you so so much for your fantastic comment :D. It's always a pleasure.

    Cheers

  11. Can't agree more with your thoughts Max...I believe life and death is something which is so mysterious and uncontrollable by us, so we don't have any right to take away life either. And to me it also involves taking away life of animals for food. Some may argue it is for our own sustenance and health we do so, but then there are numerous people on earth who live on just vegetarian fare. When lives are taken away for the one we hate, or someone is rigorously punished, we forget that one day the same fate may hang for us but then who is going to be so much philosophical. Everybody loves to live in the present in the cacophony of the unknown.

  12. Hi Kalyan :D!

"I believe life and death is something which is so mysterious and uncontrollable by us, so we don't have any right to take away life either."

    I hear you...

"And to me it also involves taking away life of animals for food."

I understand where you are coming from, but to many of us this is part of a spiritual/religious tradition (or commandment, depending on individual perspective):
«Every moving thing that liveth shall be for food for you; as the green herb have I given you all.» (the book of Genesis 9:3)

"When lives are taken away for the one we hate, or someone is rigorously punished, we forget that one day the same fate may hang for us but then who is going to be so much philosophical. Everybody loves to live in the present in the cacophony of the unknown."

    Very well said!

Kalyan, you are spoiling us, mate! This was a fantastic comment for which I thank you a million times :D.
It's always a huge pleasure to hear your thoughts, my friend.

  13. Olá Max!

I congratulate Israel for this move and I welcome Gilad Shalit home! It was quite moving to see him returning to his family. Wait a minute: didn't you say in one of your posts that you'd like to see this happening? I think it was early this year...
As for Qadafi: I do not feel sorry for him, he was a monster; however I do think that even death should be respected, yes.

"God exhaled life into flesh and it became Man. God inhaled life from flesh and it became Soul." - this is beautiful!

I can't wait to see what you are bringing us tomorrow...

    Tchau

P.S: I read in the comment section that I may have issues in publishing my comment...wish me luck!

  15. Olá Celeste :D!

LOL yes, I hoped in "Silence is Golden" that Israel would bring Shalit home and it did - very few politicians rise up to my expectations and PM Netanyahu has. So, I was very happy about this event.

"["God exhaled life into flesh and it became Man. God inhaled life from flesh and it became Soul."] - this is beautiful!"

    Thank you *bowing*.

"I can't wait to see what you are bringing us tomorrow..."

  17. Gadhaffi was a criminal but I didn't like to see his body being displayed as if he was an animal or something. Muslims have showed us that they do not value life let alone death: the bloodier the corpse the more media attention they will want to attract.

    Good post
