And God Created Woman...

Mrs. Mary Robinson by Thomas Gainsborough

“And the Lord God said: it’s not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18).

Women were created to help men, to be their balance; however since women’s emancipation the definition of “help” may have changed a bit (at least, in the mind of many women). So, how far are today’s men willing to go to get “female help”?

This past weekend, I heard a most disturbing episode (taken place in England): a man, secretly, administered steroids to his wife, for three months, so that she’d become ugly and fat enough to quit her job and finally stay at home to take care of their children.
I wonder how the whole affair may have played out...

Hypothesis I

He asked his wife to be a stay-at-home mum, because now he is earning well enough to provide a comfortable life to his family. She rejected this suggestion, outright, saying that she has a career to think of and, that soon she will be promoted. He reminded her of the children’s welfare and, the advantages of her staying at home to give them support etc; but she reiterated her career comes first and, plus, her salary will allow her to buy them all the things they want, need and dream of. He begged her to reconsider; she said “no!” He went to his local gym and while running on the treadmill, he plotted the future of the “career woman”...[*running*]...“You see, darling, I put my children (& myself) first!” he tells himself...three months later, his bearded, stout, wife is a “loving & caring” fulltime mum.

Hypothesis II

The husband is promoted, he earns big time now and, in his professional circle he is the only one whose wife isn’t a “Real Housewife” – this embarrasses him. Therefore, he gets home and conveys his promotion to his beloved. He stresses the fact that now that he has been promoted, they are in the “first league”, meaning that she no longer has to put up with her boss (that pain in the neck); that she can stay at home and do what she has always dreamed of: to take care of their children. She frowns and with vehemence says “NO!” She presents her arguments (valid ones: her mum stays with the kids, they are fine; she wants to be busy and accomplish something) but although he doesn’t agree with her, he smiles saying “You are right, love!”
At the gentleman’s club he shares his personal predicament with a colleague who suggests a radical plan: steroids to tame the shrewd.

Three months later the “Real Haired Housewife” is a fulltime mum.

And God created woman to help. But today, what does “help” mean exactly?

  1. That's horrible! It may just be my adolescent hormones talking, but I don't see how making your wife ugly could ever be worth... anything, really.

  2. This is how it played out: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/8864553/Man-laced-wifes-food-with-steroids.html What a monster! To lighten up a bit here is something about God creating woman.

One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve calls out to God, "Lord, I have
    a problem!"
    "What's the problem, Eve?"
"Lord, I know you created me and provided this beautiful garden and
all of these wonderful animals and that hilarious comedic snake, but
    I'm just not happy."
"Why is that, Eve?" came the reply from above.
"Lord, I am lonely, and I'm sick to death of apples."
"Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man
    for you."
    "What's a man, Lord?"
"This man will be a flawed creature, with many bad traits. He'll lie,
cheat, and be vain and glorious; all in all, he'll give you a hard time.
But...he'll be bigger, faster, and will like to hunt and kill things.
He will look silly when he's aroused, but since you've been complaining,
I'll create him in such a way that he will satisfy your physical needs.
He will be witless and will revel in childish things like fighting and
kicking a ball about. He won't be too smart, so he'll also need your
    advice to think properly."
"Sounds great," says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow.
    "What's the catch, Lord?"
"Well... you can have him on one condition."
    "What's that, Lord?"
"As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant, and self-admiring... So you'll
have to let him believe that I made him first. Just remember, it's our
little secret...You know, woman to woman."

  3. One of our church leaders has called the creation of woman, the "crowning act of creation". Think about it. According to the Bible, all else was created before women. Eve was the last to be created, and in our church leader's estimation, it was the "crowning act", which symbolizes that it was a very special creation. I think too many women undervalue their worth....

    "What a monster!"

Yeah, I had read it already *nodding*...but thanks for the link anyway. The man is a monster indeed; but his case should make us think: how desperate have men become and what do they really feel about women working outside the household?

"To lighten up a bit here is something about God creating woman"

ROFL ROFL ROFL I loved the fact that the snake became hilarious LOL...smashing!
LOL poor men! But I must say that many of them can be far more agreeable than any apple...so I understand this version of Eve LOL...

Rummy, thank you so much for your comment and mainly for the humour: you rock :D.

I like that theory: it is quite flattering to Women, cause indeed real Women are special.

"I think too many women undervalue their worth...."

So, so true (which is most unfortunate and disappointing)!

D, excellent comment for which I thank you a million times :D.

Max, there are two other perspectives:
1- God created woman to help man only he didn't understand it quite well and therefore thinks that woman is to be his slave and punching bag (i.e. the male model of violent men).
2- God Created Woman to help Man who appreciating God's gesture and, understanding the purpose of this act, loves and respects Woman for her precious nature and for all else she represents (i.e. the male model of good men).

The meaning of Help differs withing the different social strata, so it is hard to define it; but generally speaking I'd say that women are less willing to help (in a sense of sacrificing their needs) than in the past.

    Great article!

  8. Hi Max,

What an awful story from England. Truth is stranger than fiction. Why did the woman have to become "ugly" to quit her job? Is this perpetuating the myth that only "beautiful" people should be allowed to work? It sounds like the relationship was strained in the first place and what he did was an atrocious act to make her totally dependent on him, so he would have total control over her. Human motives are often times disturbing.

    Very provocative piece.

    Stay Beautiful Cheers!

  9. Olá Max,

Apparently men are willing to go too far to obtain female help - the man who gave steroids to his wife, is he a monster or was he desperate?
You raise a very important issue: women seem to have forgotten the purpose for their existence. For example, it is not uncommon to hear women saying "I don't cook! And I never will because I am no man's slave!"...I mean, women cook for their children, not for men!

Being the adjuvant force doesn't mean slavery; by the contrary, it means to complement the significant other. If women are unwilling to complement, to help, to assist, then don't shack up; please, do not get married...stay alone in your pitiful little world (and cry over a bucket of ice-cream)!

Sorry, Max, for the harshness of my words but women need to decide once and for all if they want to be Women or if they want to be sheer animals (obeying to their needs only).

  10. "steroids to tame the shrewd." HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...funny!
Peer pressure is another factor to such issues.

  11. Written with great humor but certainly a serious subject. I should think this would be a serious crime, forbidden and punishable by law!

I guess people should work out their (mutual) expectations before getting married and having kids, huh? Or would that be requiring too much forethought and responsibility- taking for the average person? lol....

"1- God created woman to help man only he didn't understand it quite well and therefore thinks that woman is to be his slave and punching bag (i.e. the male model of violent men)."

Indeed, there are some nasty little sub-creatures out there: sometimes, I just feel like committing violence towards them, but then I would be stooping to their level, wouldn't I?

"2- God Created Woman to help Man who appreciating God's gesture and, understanding the purpose of this act, loves and respects Woman for her precious nature and for all else she represents (i.e. the male model of good men)."

:) gorgeous! Oh yes, there are plenty of good men out there (thank God).

"The meaning of Help differs withing the different social strata, so it is hard to define it; but generally speaking I'd say that women are less willing to help (in a sense of sacrificing their needs) than in the past."

True. I am inclined to agree with you...much inclined.

    "Great article!"

Thanks *bowing*...I'm glad you liked it.

"What an awful story from England. Truth is stranger than fiction."

    Right?

"Why did the woman have to become "ugly" to quit her job? Is this perpetuating the myth that only "beautiful" people should be allowed to work?"

I think the man, in question, has a twisted view of life; because obviously she didn't stop working.
No, I don't think it is that; however you raise a very good question!

"It sounds like the relationship was strained in the first place and what he did was an atrocious act to make her totally dependent on him, so he would have total control over her. Human motives are often times disturbing."

    I agree.

    "Very provocative piece."

Thank you, although that was not my intention...I promise *hand upon heart*...;)

"Apparently men are willing to go too far to obtain female help - the man who gave steroids to his wife, is he a monster or was he desperate?"

Well, he can be viewed as a monster; but we can also ask ourselves whether the monster was born out of despair or not, yes.

"You raise a very important issue: women seem to have forgotten the purpose for their existence. For example, it is not uncommon to hear women saying "I don't cook! And I never will because I am no man's slave!"...I mean, women cook for their children, not for men!"

There are some women who should never get near a kitchen, but I understand where you are coming from and I agree.

"Being the adjuvant force doesn't mean slavery; by the contrary, it means to complement the significant other. If women are unwilling to complement, to help, to assist, then don't shack up; please, do not get married...stay alone in your pitiful little world (and cry over a bucket of ice-cream)!"

I totally agree with you. LOL LOL LOL oh, that's so nasty, so Sex & the City LOL LOL...*nodding*...

"Sorry, Max, for the harshness of my words but women need to decide once and for all if they want to be Women or if they want to be sheer animals (obeying to their needs only)."

It's all right, darling. Well, they do need to reflect upon their deportment and existential purpose that's for sure.

"Written with great humor but certainly a serious subject. I should think this would be a serious crime, forbidden and punishable by law!"

It is extremely serious, but I wanted to mitigate the monstruosity a bit. You should think correctly, however (and you won't believe this) the judge was so understanding and thus he got a suspended jail sentence...

"I guess people should work out their (mutual) expectations before getting married and having kids, huh? Or would that be requiring too much forethought and responsibility- taking for the average person? lol...."

  17. I'm not sure if there is a good exploration or a hypotheses - I mean that man is in sane!

To me a woman is helping to balance out the good life; to make it colourful, interesting, attracting, challenging, spicy etc.

Maybe its about time to recall the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen's "A doll house" again? to wake up some men who might have gone into a male pig hibernation?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Quick and simple answer:
Both hypotheses deal with the man's ego. Therefore, "help", to me, means to help tame and balance the male ego and show "man" that there is more to life than conquest and power. Working together man and woman can accomplish so much more than either could alone.

  19. Hi Renny :D!

"I'm not sure if there is a good exploration or a hypotheses - I mean that man is in sane!"

There is always room for hypotheses and analyses (and they are not always good). But I agree with you that the man lacks a fuse or two (for so many reasons other than the obvious).

"To me a woman is helping to balance out the good life; to make it colourful, interesting, attracting, challenging, spicy etc."

That is so beautiful, Renny :D.

"Maybe its about time to recall the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen's "A doll house" again? to wake up some men who might have gone into a male pig hibernation?"

    LOL you're right.

I'd say men do the same for many women - they tame and balance their female ego and show "women" that there is more to life than conquest and power lol.

"Working together man and woman can accomplish so much more than either could alone."

Gorgeously said! I couldn't agree more with you, man! :D

  21. Max, if he got a suspended jail sentence, which is hard to believe, I hope the wife left him--to protect herself from further abuse.

  22. Here I must say, a natural healthy relationship is all about adjustments, compromises and most importantly understanding each others aspirations. To me both sides has to be pragmatic about the way they want to take their life forward where it should not seem one side is coming too heavy on the other but then a balance should be maintained. Its about ranking the priorities in life and not giving way to small egos where both partners should feel the urge to support each other rather than prejudiced by narrow thoughts. The important thing is in the rationale of doing something and giving a weightage to it. To me there should be a fine and healthy balance for any family to be a warm and happy family, else we will find a overwhelming situation where the husband, wife, children all have different times for meals, who don't move out together on weekends as either the husband or the wife will be busy in their workplace or too stressed out to move. Now that's where things would not be natural from a family perspective. So at the end of the day its not all about the dreams but to make life beautiful in the company you live.

He did get a suspended 12 month jail sentence *nodding*. She did leave him, yes - to protect herself and her kids (can you imagine the message their father was sending? The girl would think it is normal to be abused and the boy would think it is normal for a man to abuse his wife...).

Very well said, Kalyan. And unfortunately I have witnessed this sort of "family dynamics" and although I don't like to judge, I must say it saddens me specially when children are involved.

"So at the end of the day its not all about the dreams but to make life beautiful in the company you live."
