Are you a patriot? Has any political activist tried to
make you pay the price for it?
I heard, a few years ago, that many Americans travelling
abroad say they are Canadians to avoid the typical anti-Americanism, harassment
or to keep from being attacked even. Those who set themselves to verbal and physically
attack Americans will justify their stupidity and animalistic behaviour by
blaming the policies carried out by the American government; however their justification
isn’t a reasonable ground for defence.
Last March, a patriotic Israeli student (in Scotland) was
studying in his room where an Israeli flag was hung on the wall. He had a
room-mate who was drunk and unconscious. The room-mate’s friends came to visit and when noticing the Israeli national symbol on the wall, “one of them, opened his trouser, rubbed
his hands over his genitals and then rubbed them over the flag.” They also called him a terrorist and urinated in the
sink. Why? Because of the policies carried out by the Israeli government;
however this sub-human demeanour doesn’t represent a reasonable ground for
defence either.
We can protest about a country’s
policy-making; we can even criticise its foreign policies, however I question
the right to disrespect and assault that country’s citizens for many reasons (of
which I will enumerate only a few):
- Not all the citizens of a country agree with the policies of their government.
- Not all citizens of a democratic nation have voted for their government.
- Racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia are not a tool for political protest (unless one is a witless, meaningless and the lowest of the lowest of human beings).
Yet those who are intelligent,
reasonable, sensible human beings with a healthy sexual life will not belittle
themselves, because they understand the genesis of things and the meaning of
respect. They know the difference between protesting against governments and
lashing out on individuals who are proud of their national history, traditions,
and just want to travel around the world (and engage with other cultures) in
peace.
It is a problem when natural-born criminals
become political activists or pretend to be so. It is lamentable when political
activists lose focus and/or miss the point. It is regrettable when political
activists do not make use of reason and behave like common animals.

What I don't like is when the "left" accuses conservatives of anti-patriotism if we disagree with Pres. Obama's policies. They also often accuse us of racism at the same time.
ReplyDeleteHi D! :D
Delete"What I don't like is when the "left" accuses conservatives of anti-patriotism if we disagree with Pres. Obama's policies. They also often accuse us of racism at the same time."
It is silly indeed, people have the right to disagree.
However the way many conservatives (in America) criticise President Obama does seem to border disrespect, anti-patriotism and sometimes racism even - I think it is the tone they use and the non-stop disagreement (they remind me of the communists in Portugal). Let's not exaggerate, folks.
I do find it funny, though, the blind love and devotion most of the left shows towards President Obama: everything he does is correct; he can do no wrong. Let's not exaggerate, people.
D, thank you ever so much for your input :D.
Always a pleasure.

Max to Maxiavelli? Is this a transformation on the order of Sarai to Sarah? Or Abram to Abraham? Anyway, I do like it.
ReplyDeleteYou are reminding me to keep my identity as a Californian when I travel abroad. It has been a decade since I was in Europe, but I never experienced anything negative there ... at least that I would associate to my nationality.
As for the lewd and rude, my reading of the news gives me the impression that much of Europe has never learned to express themselves otherwise. A European occupy protest wouldn't be able to last through the winter because they were always exposing themselves.
Regarding foreigners coming here, my desire has always been to make them feel at home and welcome, regardless of where they come from. That would mean taking as much concern for an Israeli as a Palestinian, but certainly some etiquette is needed.
Hi Looney :D!
Delete"Max to Maxiavelli? Is this a transformation on the order of Sarai to Sarah? Or Abram to Abraham? Anyway, I do like it."
LOL LOL well, once a month I go through a metamorphosis and turn into Maxiavelli. Oh Sarah and Abraham became so by Godly decree; it is not the case here ;). I am glad you like it.
"You are reminding me to keep my identity as a Californian when I travel abroad. It has been a decade since I was in Europe, but I never experienced anything negative there ... at least that I would associate to my nationality."
LOL LOL you know? I was surprised when I was told about Americans suffering this kind of antagonism, because I never witnessed it myself...but that is the word out there. Anyway, I am glad you never experienced it :D.
"As for the lewd and rude, my reading of the news gives me the impression that much of Europe has never learned to express themselves otherwise. A European occupy protest wouldn't be able to last through the winter because they were always exposing themselves."
Right? ROFL...I had a fiery discussion with members of the Portuguese Occupy protest in my other blog recently and let me tell you: they exposed themselves as total emotional and purposeless protesters without a sense of timing *nodding*.
"Regarding foreigners coming here, my desire has always been to make them feel at home and welcome, regardless of where they come from. That would mean taking as much concern for an Israeli as a Palestinian, but certainly some etiquette is needed."
And that is the proper way to do things. I hear you.
Looney, thank you so much for your fabulous comment :D.

To call such low life as political activists is to insult activists. In my book, activists do not stoop to such vile acts. They are concerned with their internal problems and use democratic methods to voice their opposition to the policies and actions of other nations.
ReplyDeleteHi Rummy :D!
Delete"To call such low life as political activists is to insult activists."
Right? And yet that is what they call themselves: political anti-racism activists *nodding*.
"In my book, activists do not stoop to such vile acts. They are concerned with their internal problems and use democratic methods to voice their opposition to the policies and actions of other nations."
That is my vision of political activism. However, it seems like this activity is being hijacked as well, which is a shame.
Rummy, thank you ever so much for your fantastic comment - well said. :D
Cheers
I agree with Rummuser 100%!
DeleteOlá Max!
ReplyDeleteAfter the 9/11 it was quite common, in Europe, to hear people bash Americans and even blame them for the towers attack. That was when I realised that humans can be disgusting; after seeing live on TV people dying and throwing themselves off building in a desperate move to escape fire, they had the nerve to rejoice over "the loss of the US", disgusting!
About this Israeli student: that pseudo-activist (an anti-racism activist no less) should be ashamed of himself. His actions were not a protest against a government and its policies, it was sheer lewdness if not the expression of a sexual deviation. I am shocked that young Europeans would behave in such manner.
"It is a problem when natural-born criminals become political activists or pretend to be so. It is lamentable when political activists lose focus and/or miss the point. It is regrettable when political activists do not make use of reason and behave like common animals"
Well said!
Max, keep exposing human stupidity.

Olá Celeste :D!

Shameful and disrespectful *nodding*...
"That was when I realised that humans can be disgusting; after seeing live on TV people dying and throwing themselves off building in a desperate move to escape fire, they had the nerve to rejoice over "the loss of the US", disgusting!"
Some humans have lost their sense of decency, haven't they?

I feel your pain, girl.

Thank you *bowing*.
"Max, keep exposing human stupidity."
I will try, Celeste; I will try...
Celeste, thank you ever so much for having shared your thoughts on this issue :D.

I never understood people who use violence to make a political point. This makes me think of anarchists whose message gets lost in their violence and destruction. It also makes me think of immature political activists who make use of insults to make a point. Are they activists at all?
ReplyDeleteThis Pro-Palestinian activist clearly suffers from a sexual disorder and he should be committed, cause soon he will resort to sexual violence toward pro-Israel women to protest against the Israeli government. C'est dégueulasse!
Salut Louis :D!
Delete"I never understood people who use violence to make a political point. This makes me think of anarchists whose message gets lost in their violence and destruction. It also makes me think of immature political activists who make use of insults to make a point."
Me neither, darling. Right? It is so witless to resort to insults and violence.
"Are they activists at all?"
No, they are not. They are sub-humans.
"This Pro-Palestinian activist clearly suffers from a sexual disorder and he should be committed, cause soon he will resort to sexual violence toward pro-Israel women to protest against the Israeli government. C'est dégueulasse!"
LOL oh come on...now you are exaggerating *nodding*.
Louis, thank you ever so much for your input :D.

Well, given that they were (1) presumably Scottish and (2) assumedly college kids, my guess is they were probably drunk and that the demeanor was more alcohol-motivated than politically motivated. Anti-Israeli politics are just easier to defend than drunkenness.
ReplyDeleteHi Vid :D!
Delete"Well, given that they were (1) presumably Scottish and (2) assumedly college kids, my guess is they were probably drunk and that the demeanor was more alcohol-motivated than politically motivated."
LOL LOL I disagree but your argument would serve as defence is some countries, I suppose.
"Anti-Israeli politics are just easier to defend than drunkenness"
Apparently is it not (as the Scottish judge has proved).
Vid, thank you so much for your controversial comment :D.
Cheers
I admit this young man was wrong and he corrupts what political activism is all about. But I am not surprised cause we cannot have israelis, who illegally occupy palestinian land, to rub their patriotism in our face and do nothing about it! That flag was a provocative act.
ReplyDelete*rubbing my Israeli patriotism on your face*...what are you going to do?
DeleteHow do you feel when you see those poor palestinian children suffering at the hands of israelis? When mother lives in constant insecurity without knowing when one of her kids will be killed, huh? What about palestinians losing their homes? How patriotic do you feel when you see things?
DeleteHi Celia :D!
Delete"I admit this young man was wrong and he corrupts what political activism is all about."
Indeed.
"But I am not surprised cause we cannot have israelis, who illegally occupy palestinian land, to rub their patriotism in our face and do nothing about it! That flag was a provocative act."
That is the silliest thing I have ever heard in my life *nodding*. You have just proved why some spectra of society are wary of the left: sometimes, leftists sound ridiculous.
Celia, thanks for your input :D.
Cheers
Celia, I don't know how Ana feels but I can tell you how I feel about your questions: I feel sorry for you! How about if you walked up to the victims of Palestinian atrocities and asked them how they felt? How would you feel if your son left home to take a bus to go to school and then gets blown up by a Palestinian terrorist? And don't give me that argument that they are reacting to an occupation because it doesn't cut anymore: the IRA tried to fight occupation with violence and it didn't work.
DeleteMax, I feel like disparaging my proud Angolan neighbour: he keeps rubbing his patriotism on my face (those t-shirts with the print of the Angolan flag and the red shoes). His president doesn't bother to build proper schools nor clinics nor sewage systems for the people but is buying shares in all companies in Portugal. He even bought a bank here - but I am not a political activist, so I guess I could disparage the guy...
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with you and Rummuser: people like the little mate in the Highlands are not political activists, they are animals.
Long live Eretz Yisrael! There...I am a proud Jew, come and get me!
Hi Ana :D!
Delete"I feel like disparaging my proud Angolan neighbour: he keeps rubbing his patriotism on my face (those t-shirts with the print of the Angolan flag and the red shoes)."
LOL LOL don't do that, leave him alone with his red shoes. I thought they'd stop wearing them by now...
"His president doesn't bother to build proper schools nor clinics nor sewage systems for the people but is buying shares in all companies in Portugal. He even bought a bank here - but I am not a political activist, so I guess I could disparage the guy..."
Eduardo dos Santos and his family are corrupt and shameless; but I am guessing that there is some sort of political swap in the middle of all this.
lol I know you won't bother that proud Angolan...
"Long live Eretz Yisrael! There...I am a proud Jew, come and get me!"
LOL you kill me!
Ana, thank you so much for your hilarious (yet serious) comment :D. Always a pleasure.
Cheers
No political activist has the right to patrol other people's patriotism and protests should be done respectfully.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous :D!

Agreed.
Anonymous, thank you ever so much for your input :D.

Jesus was the first political activist and he did it with love, respect and peace! He didn't force others to follow him, he didn't disrespect them and he wasn't vile. Today's political activists should learn from Jesus Christ our Lord, amen!
ReplyDeleteP.
Hi P :D!

Well, Jesus a political activist, eh? All I can say is: good point and amen!
P, it was a pleasure to have you back. Thank you for your input :D.

Me God, the conversation is interesting here. Max, I have a problem with political activists, I really do: they defend their cause so fervently that they become blind. Their blindness makes them bias because their cause is all they know and they shit out the rest of the world and knowledge. I have a problem with them.
ReplyDeleteThat lad in the Highlands is stupid and he deserved the label of racist, cause that's what he is (him and his mates). Excellent piece, Max!
Hi Joe :D!

It usually is ;).
"Max, I have a problem with political activists, I really do: they defend their cause so fervently that they become blind. Their blindness makes them bias because their cause is all they know and they shit out the rest of the world and knowledge. I have a problem with them."
I see what you mean and, I must say you have got a point: I have seen it happen.
"That lad in the Highlands is stupid and he deserved the label of racist, cause that's what he is (him and his mates). Excellent piece, Max!"
Indeed. Thank you so much, Joe.
Joe, thanks for your fabulous comment (and criticism) :D.

Hey Max! Hope you're doing great. It's been raining here all day because of the storm, but we're ok. :) Have a great weekend sweetie.
ReplyDeleteKisses and hugs.
Hi Liza :D!
Delete"Hope you're doing great. It's been raining here all day because of the storm, but we're ok. :)"
I am, I am...thank you *bowing*. Ah storms in your country are like sunny days in mine: normal. But I am glad you are all ok :) - that's all that matters.
Liza, thank you so much for having dropped by, darling :D.
Cheers and a hug
I'm afraid I have trouble with all ideologues even if they're decent people. They exaggerate to arouse passions and close down their minds to the broader picture. I realize I'm in the minority and will never change the world, but so be it.
ReplyDeleteHi Jean :D!
Delete"I'm afraid I have trouble with all ideologues even if they're decent people. They exaggerate to arouse passions and close down their minds to the broader picture."
I understand so well where you are coming from...
"I realize I'm in the minority and will never change the world, but so be it."
There's nothing wrong with being in the minority (sometimes those are the ones who do great things).
Jean, thank you ever soo much for your great comment :D.

I will just quote few immortal lines by Rabindranath Tagore 'Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way...Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit...Where the mind is led forward by thee
ReplyDeleteInto ever-widening thought and action...Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."...its all about sentiments and sentiments should not override logical reasoning and the thought process. I second you a policy of another country may directly/indirectly affect us but it is absolutely unjustifiable to vent the frustration against the citizens of that country...we should realise what if we were in the exactly same situation and then we would be able to feel the pain of it.
