Analysis: Mahmoud Abbas' Speech at the UNGA

Mahmoud Abbas delivering his speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)

Last Thursday, on the 27th of September, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, after making us wait for him for 58 minutes, delivered a very inconsistent speech before the General Assembly of the UN

The leader of the Palestinian Authority made sure he appealed to his Arab base - by constantly repeating the words "occupation; occupying power and settlers"; to his African base - by using words such as "colonisation, racial colonisation and apartheid"; and to his Western Leftist base - by injecting expressions like "ethnic cleansing" and "Israeli occupying forces".
Now let's analyse more closely some of Mr Abbas' incoherent words:

"the occupying Power (...continues) preventing the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) from implementing vital infrastructure projects and providing services to its citizens, (..) It is also obstructing the establishment of agricultural, industrial, tourism and housing projects by the private sector in vast areas of the Occupied Palestinian Territory."

Analysis: first, the Levy Report states that, in accordance to the International Law, Israel is not an occupying power and, thus, there is no such thing as occupied "Palestinian Territory". Second, what prevents PNA from developing infrastructure projects is lack of political will and corruption (e.g. Mr Abbas hasn't answered yet how his sons became millionaires with donor funds). Hamas, in Gaza, managed to develop 150 international-sponsored projects, that included 14 agricultural projects (that set up 400 greenhouses and 1,600 plots for crops; built 100 refrigeration and packing rooms; restored agricultural lands and wells) and 11 infrastructure projects (two electrical; restored 21 agricultural access roads; developed a bathing beach; repaired four roads) with the cooperation of the State of Israel. I rest my case.

"I speak on behalf of an angry people, a people that feels that, while they press for their rights to freedom, adopt of a culture of peace (..)"

Analysis: The Palestinian people are angry at PA's corruption and ineptness.
The Palestinian people may, deep down, want to adopt a culture of peace; however, their political leaders won't let them because the PA TV brainwashes Palestinian children into believing that Christians and Jews are "remnants of the crusaders and Khaibar" and "inferior and smaller, more cowardly and despised"; that they are "the enemies of destiny" and as such children should ask themselves "Where is my weapon? I found it - a stone. I took it and threw it at the enemies of destiny". Palestinian Religious leaders preach that "Al-Aqsa Mosque [a metonymy for Jerusalem] cannot remain under the control of pigs and apes".

"We (...) the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, which will not accept to be divided into two; and we shall not allow it to be divided into two" and "we say before the international community: there is still a chance – maybe the last – to save the two-State solution and to salvage peace (..) an already-dying peace process"

Analysis: a clear threat. Mr Abbas confessed, before the whole world, that Fatah and Hamas work together toward the establishment of an Independent Palestinian State in what they consider to be the historical Palestine (i.e. Gaza Strip, Judea & Samaria and the Land of Israel) and they won't rest until they get it. They will continue to stall the peace talks until they achieve their goal; thus the "already-dying peace process".

"There is no homeland for us except Palestine, and there is no land for us but Palestine. We shall not accept an alternative homeland, nor an alternative land. Palestine is our homeland and shall remain our homeland." and "(..) the brave Palestinian people will not allow themselves to be the victim of a new Nakba. We will not allow that, we will stay in our land"

Analysis: a re-affirmation of the previous words. A confirmation that PA does not want peace because the Palestinian Politicians' true ambition is a One Palestinian State Solution; despite all the nice words about peace and commitment to a "Utopian" two state solution.

"We reaffirm that we are committed to non-violence and reject terrorism in all its forms, particularly State terrorism."

Analysis: the Islamic Jihad (a terrorist group) is a Fatah offshoot. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Fatah's military wing, announced [according to the Union of Islamic World Students (last May)] that all of its military branches (i.e. terrorist groups under its auspices, in Gaza and Judea & Samaria) would soon be united and ran "under one military council" (reportedly financed by Hezbollah). Abu Mohammad, the Brigade's spokesperson, said that all leaders "are determined to ensure their success as the al-Aqsa Brigade forms the backbone of Fatah Movement" based on the ideology of "liberating Palestine through armed resistance". PA is preparing for war against Israel (whom they view as a Terrorist State).

Mr Abbas is convinced that he can simply throw sand in our eyes...

  1. Very inconsistent indeed. I didn't know that the islamic jihad was a offshoot of the fatah movement, but I do know that part of the accords include a demilitarized Palestine...so, how can all Palestinian leaders agree to unite all its military arms? After claiming in the speech that they abide to all international agreements and covenants, isn't this a contradiction?

    1. Hi Anonymous :D!

"I didn't know that the islamic jihad was a offshoot of the fatah movement, but I do know that part of the accords include a demilitarized Palestine...so, how can all Palestinian leaders agree to unite all its military arms?"

Yes, the IJ is a Fatah offshoot and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade is their military wing.
A demilitarised Palestine is one of the conditions in the Peace talks, but apparently Palestinian leaders have a different plan...

"After claiming in the speech that they abide to all international agreements and covenants, isn't this a contradiction?"

Palestine hasn't upheld any of their responsibilities (demanded by the international agreements):

      - fight terror & prevent violence (although they pretend to)
      - prevent incitement and hostile propaganda
      - combat effective and systematically terrorist organisations
      - prosecution and punishment of terrorists (au contraire, they laud them as martyrs)
      - confiscation of illegal arms.

      So, draw your conclusions...

Anonymous, thank you ever so much for your comment :D.

      Cheers

  2. Mahmouud Abbas made a spectacle of himself: what kind of speech was that? To think that he told the American Jewish Community that he'd be more sensitive to Jewish claims to the land...yeah, right! I bet the American Jews who fell for his bs must be feeling like clowns now. Palestine wants war? Let's go to war then.

    1. Hi Ana :D!

"Mahmouud Abbas made a spectacle of himself: what kind of speech was that?"

It was a very sad speech *nodding*. He missed yet another opportunity to make peace; instead he made threats.

"To think that he told the American Jewish Community that he'd be more sensitive to Jewish claims to the land...yeah, right! I bet the American Jews who fell for his bs must be feeling like clowns now."

I believe some of them are a bit disappointed by now.

"Palestine wants war? Let's go to war then."

But can they afford going to war (despite all preparations)?

Ana, thank you ever so much for your comment :D.

      Cheers
