Comment: Bibi Netanyahu's Speech at the UN

Binyamin Netanyahu delivering a speech before the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA)

Last week, on the 27th of September, Binyamin Netanyahu delivered a speech before the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The Israeli Premier began by throwing a jab at Iran (who, earlier in that week, stated that Israel had no historical roots in the Middle East) and at the Arab Politicians by saying, "Three thousand years ago, King David reigned over the Jewish state in our eternal capital, Jerusalem. I say that to all those who proclaim that the Jewish state has no roots in our region and that it will soon disappear (...) The people of Israel live on. We say in Hebrew Am Yisrael Chai (עם ישראל חי), and the Jewish state will live forever."

Most of PM Netanyahu's speech was dedicated to Iran (as expected) and his words were quite straightforward, thus they dispense with deep analysis. Nevertheless, there were some interesting passages in his speech that deserve our attention and comment.
Before proceeding with the principal purpose of this article, I would like to congratulate the Premier for not dignifying Mr Abbas's absurdities with a long answer.

"We will never be uprooted again."

Comment: agreed. However, the PM missed the opportunity to present a powerful argument that would uproot, once and for all, the Arab & Persian illusion.

"The forces of medievalism seek a world in which women and minorities are subjugated, in which knowledge is suppressed, in which not life but death is glorified." and "(...) intolerance is directed first at their fellow Muslims, and then to (...) anyone who doesn't submit to their unforgiving creed. They want to drag humanity back to an age of unquestioning dogma and unrelenting conflict."

Comment: a reference to the Islamic World, which (unlike the Judeo-Christian World) has not gone through a period of Renaissance (i.e. Enlightenment) yet - and if Islamists (who glorify death) have their way, the Ummah will never undergo such Reformation. I couldn't avoid noting that PM Netanyahu used the verb "Submit" - this is a clear reference to the Quran "[Sura 3:19] The Only religion approved by GOD is 'Submission' (...)" (the "submitters" are the Muslims; so basically the Quran states that the only approved religion is Islam) - the Israeli leader did so to tell Muslims that, unlike them, the Judeo-Christian World allows its people to read, know and ask questions about different Holy Books.

"Israel stands proudly with the forces of modernity. We protect the rights of all our citizens:  men and women, Jews and Arabs, Muslims and Christians – all are equal before the law."

Comment: the antithesis of medieval Islam. Israel is a contemporary, democratic, Jewish State where all are equal under the Law. In Israel women are seen as equals, they have options and can do whatever they set their mind into. All religions are respected and can be professed in peace - the same cannot be said of most Islamic nations.

"[Israeli] know-how is in every cell-phone and computer that you're using."

Comment: a very clever criticism to the BDS Movement (started and spread by Palestinian NGOs). If they want to boycott Israeli products that much, perhaps they should start by binning their computers and cell-phones - instruments that are imperative to the dissemination of their cause.
This is an appropriate time to send a small message to Brazil: right now, you are on the wrong side of history and politics. Russia will rise and leave you behind; India will rise and be pragmatic; China is stepping into the threshold of change; South Africa's party is coming to an end (it is just a question of time; especially after Mandela's demise). Mexico will surpass you because it is on the right side of history and politics. Quo Vadis, Brazil?

"At this late hour, there is only one way to peacefully prevent Iran from getting atomic bombs. That's by placing a clear red line on Iran's nuclear weapons program. Red lines don't lead to war; red lines prevent war (...) Earlier this year, Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz. The United States drew a clear red line and Iran backed off."

Comment: definitely putting pressure on President Obama's administration (although PM Netanyahu re-affirmed his appreciation for President Obama's position on the Iranian threat). By investing too much time on this "red line" subject, PM Netanyahu may have entertained the opinion that there is indeed tension between Israel and the US; when such tension doesn't exist (according to DM Ehud Barak). But perhaps Binyamin Netanyahu had a purpose: to please his radical American Jewish base (whom he excessively pays reverence to).

"Look, no one appreciates our intelligence agencies more than the Prime Minister of Israel. All these leading intelligence agencies are superb, including ours. They've foiled many attacks. They've saved many lives. But they are not foolproof"

Comment: a politician lashing out at intelligence services...was it wise?

  1. עם ישראל חי - he knows it, I know it, we all know it! I pity those who think that they will ever manage to uproot us from Israel again...keep dreaming. Now, what powerful argument are you talking about, Max? It will take some time before Islam goes through a Renaissance period, mainly because the moderates do not speak out enough and seem numb before Islamists (and when they seem to act, they always open the door to radical rhetoric anyway).
Brazil is full of s***...who is organising the Olympics for them? Yeah, a member of Am Yisrael.
My grade to Netanyahu's speech is: B+.

    1. Hi Ana :D!

      עם ישראל חי

"Now, what powerful argument are you talking about, Max?"

Well, let's say that he shoul've started by mentioning the Levy Report at the UNGA - why didn't he?

"It will take some time before Islam goes through a Renaissance period, mainly because the moderates do not speak out enough and seem numb before Islamists (and when they seem to act, they always open the door to radical rhetoric anyway)."

True, the moderates seem to fear Islamists too much and yet they are the majority. It is like they freeze...perhaps you are right: it will take time. But meanwhile, we have to do what we have to do.

"Brazil is full of s***...who is organising the Olympics for them? Yeah, a member of Am Yisrael."

I don't know about that; but I do know that Brazil is going in the wrong direction - it is a pity that its delightful people will have to suffer the consequences (but again, they've been electing PT for the past...9 years now? At the end of President Dilma's first term, it will be 12 years of Leftist rule; now imagine if she gets re-elected).

"My grade to Netanyahu's speech is: B+."

      It is a good grade.

Ana, thank you so much for your valuable input :D. It's always a pleasure.

      Cheers

  2. Both speeches (Abbas' and Netanyahu's) were more of the same if we exclude the bomb cartoon (that was the only thing I liked). Abbas was 58 minutes late, I though he was making some significant changes to his speech...in the end, he delivers a stupid whining text. He looked like a woman crying over a broken shoe or something. Netanyahu focused too much on Iran, why give those bastards more attention than they deserve? Are we sure they have nukes? They may have chemical weapons...

"Both speeches (Abbas' and Netanyahu's) were more of the same if we exclude the bomb cartoon (that was the only thing I liked)."

lol you liked the bomb cartoon? You must be one of the few who did. But like it or not, it seems to have been effective.

"Abbas was 58 minutes late, I though he was making some significant changes to his speech...in the end, he delivers a stupid whining text. He looked like a woman crying over a broken shoe or something."

LOL do you know many women who cry over a broken heel? *nodding*
I was disappointed at Mr Abbas' speech as well.

"Netanyahu focused too much on Iran, why give those bastards more attention than they deserve? Are we sure they have nukes? They may have chemical weapons..."

You raised some important questions. We should ponder on them.

Anonymous, thank you ever so much for this super comment :D.

  3. Olá Max,

I was about to ask what powerful argument PM Netanyahu could use to persuade the Arabs to drop their silly ambitions and plans, but then I read your answer to Ana.
I also asked myself why he didn't invite the world to study the Levy report: what does he have under his sleeve? He must have something otherwise he would've mentioned that report (a major victory for the right wing - his base of supporters).

The BDS movement is a ridiculous Palestinian move that won't work for long (and the PM in his speech may have helped in the movement's demise). But what surprises me is to see not only the world, but mainly Jews following the movement and encouraging it. It is shameful.
About Brazil: the bubble will burst, BRICS will eventually fall (because some of its elements will align themselves with the alignment) and to whom will they turn to? Portugal?
So, South Africa will go havoc after Mandelas' death...you are not the first one suggesting that. I just hope that black Africans won't suffer the most with the reformation so to speak.

In my opinion, you don't mess with the Information Services.

    Excellent article, Max!

      Perhaps he does.

"But what surprises me is to see not only the world, but mainly Jews following the [BDS] movement and encouraging it. It is shameful."

Left wing Jews can be puzzling indeed and they send out the wrong message sometimes (i.e. "we are traitors") and that is why there seems to be a growing radicalization withing the Jewish right wing - they are angry.

"About Brazil: the bubble will burst, BRICS will eventually fall (because some of its elements will align themselves with the alignment) and to whom will they turn to? Portugal?"

The bubble is already bursting, and they say it is due to China (which is experiencing a fall as well). And I am inclined to agree with you: some elements of the BRICS will shift and join the alignment.

"So, South Africa will go havoc after Mandelas' death...you are not the first one suggesting that. I just hope that black Africans won't suffer the most with the reformation so to speak."

Black Africans are already suffering with the ANC (and I am not talking about South Africans only).

"In my opinion, you don't mess with the Information Services."

      I share that same opinion.

      "Excellent article, Max!"

Thank you, I am glad you liked it *bowing*.

Celeste, thank you ever so much for your fabulous comment :D.

      Cheers

  4. I don't think he was lashing out at intelligence agencies. He said they were great but not infallible. They probably wouldn't be able to stop Iran once it completes the enrichment process"

"Some who claim that even if Iran completes the enrichment process, even if it crosses that red line that I just drew, our intelligence agencies will know when and where Iran will make the fuse, assemble the bomb, and prepare the warhead.

Look, no one appreciates our intelligence agencies more than the Prime Minister of Israel. All these leading intelligence agencies are superb, including ours. They’ve foiled many attacks. They’ve saved many lives.

    But they are not foolproof.

For over two years, our intelligence agencies didn’t know that Iran was building a huge nuclear enrichment plant under a mountain.

Do we want to risk the security of the world on the assumption that we would find in time a small workshop in a country half the size of Europe?"

    1. Hi Jean :D!

"I don't think he was lashing out at intelligence agencies. He said they were great but not infallible."

We have to insert his words into context (and here I mean, extra-text): the Israeli intel community has rallied against him concerning the Iranian issue. He knows that he doesn't have their support (the agencies made sure their voice was heard loud and clear; which is kind of an embarassment, let's admit it). And the agencies got the message.

Whomever wrote PM Netanyahu's speech did what any writer (and mainly speech writer) does: he/she inserts messages in the middle of a cloud of flattering, diplomatic, words in order to reach only those to whom the message is directed at. It's a technique.

Jean, thank you ever so much for your fantastic comment :D.

      Cheers
