The ICC has issued an arrest warrant against Simone Gbagbo, the former first lady of Côte d'Ivoire.
Mrs Gbagbo is being accused of having individual criminal responsibility as:
"regards the crimes against humanity of murder, rape and other forms of sexual violence, persecution and other inhumane acts committed during the post-election crisis from 28 November 2010 onwards by the Ivorian Defence and Security Forces ("FDS"), which were reinforced by youth militias and mercenaries loyal to President Gbagbo".
This is a historical step given by the ICC (since for the first time a woman, a first lady, is being accused of crimes against humanity along with her husband); and it opens a precedent for future criminal charges against the wives of politicians who know of and acquiesce to criminal activities against their own people; while profiting from their position.
I have already expressed my thoughts on certain wives of politicians and how they can sell their soul in exchange for power. So, seeing an international body taking a historical action against this sort of woman/wife...gives me hope about the culture of ethics and humanity.
Many people argued (and still do) that the wives of politicians are not liable for what their husbands do (because most of the times, they have no saying in matters). To those individuals, I only have two questions:
1. Do you know what marriage and pillow talk mean?
2. Do you know the amount of influence & power a vagina has?
Some could also argue that the politician most of the times opts by not heeding his wife's advice - true, it may happen; but in that case why silence; why support the crimes perpetrated by him? Once these ladies support criminal actions through their silence, they are as much imputable as their husbands.
What happens when the politician opts by not only heeding his wife's advice but also inviting her to his inner circle's meetings, where everything is planned and discussed? The ICC now says that the wife's mere presence in those rendezvous constitutes criminal participation:
"Furthermore, there are reasonable grounds to believe, given the position of Ms Gbagbo as a member of Mr Gbagbo's inner circle and her role as regards the common plan, that she made a coordinated and essential contribution to its realisation. She attended meetings of Mr Gbagbo's inner circle (...). During one of those meetings, a pro-Gbagbo youth leader proposed attacking members of Mr Ouattara's political party (...) and destroying or looting their belongings, so that they would suffer like other Ivorians had suffered because of the actions of Mr Ouattara. During this meeting, Ms Gbagbo openly expressed her agreement with this proposal."
The ICC did well to go after Simone Gbagbo; however it must not stop there. There are plenty of First Ladies, out there, who (because of their silence, compliance and complicity) must not be exempt from punishment.
This theme is definitely food for thought; for when we vote to elect a politician, we also vote to elect his/her spouse.

Hello Max; I agree. We are all accountable. My elders always taught me: "You control yourself or others will control you for you."

All Nations should support the ICC and help it to enforce it's edicts.
None of us are truly free as long as one person remains oppressed. With the nature of today's global communication, social media, the 'light of publicity' is much more potent.
Leaders of Nations/peoples should be as the shepherd, expending their energies for the welfare of those in their care, not Predators, expending the energies of their subjects for their own self aggrandizement and self enrichment.
My prayers go out to the oppressed.

Right? You and I share that vision. But apparently most do not see things that way and continue to corrupt their nations and, thus, the world. Nevertheless, this ICC decision should put them in check and serve as a warning...

Sometimes, however, a woman who lives in fear of reprisals might be exonerated; I think that's a gray area that needs consideration.

I see what you mean...but that grey area is dangerous, because many women can evoke that reason to avoid prosecution. In such cases, those women (living in fear) must be able to prove their innocence.

Well the two questions in the post brought a quick chuck in my face. How potent they are!...Indeed to be a little raw, if the women stop breastfeeding their partners, it would have a vigorous impact on the organs be, but only if all women heed to it. Some just for their narrow momentary pleasures opt to tie their eyes and give tacit support to their partners illicit activities. The only problem here is there are so many mindless whores out their even if a vacuum is created by one upright wife, the others will fill that space. I think its time these powerful first ladies's take a conscience call and unleash their hidden powers for a more better cause!
