Politics 101: How To...

Planet Earth (From Space Nasa)

How to distract the electorate

When a government is solving a grave problem (or trying to prevent an explosive information from being exposed), all it has to do is to entertain the electorate with silly issues. The government must create a diversion tactic like a rift between the PM and one of his ministers; bring up controversial debates that will lead nowhere like adoption/co-adoption by Gays (for the Portuguese audience mainly); throw the rumour about Gender Theory in primary schools; expose the president's "complicated" private life, in order to camouflage his utter incompetence (French audience); or draft a bill the government knows it will never pass in the national assembly just to divert the people's attention from what is really going on.

How to inform people about Regime Change

The government is always the first to realise when the situation is about to change. So when the electorate is informed that those who run the country have funds stashed in the Virgin Islands, it should reach the conclusion that the regime is gradually collapsing and the politicians are safeguarding their future comfort.

How to mask a political agenda

You set up a NGO to feed the hungry, to help refugees here and there, to clothe those in need, to bring water to the thirsty, light to the blind etc; then after you make a proof of intent, you start receiving money from certain governments who will dictate your agenda. You are not supposed to be political however if you want to keep receiving the money, you will become so.

With these funds you help people but you also take advantage to make a name for the organisation; then you will need celebrities to become ambassadors (they think they are in it to raise funds when in fact they are there to bestow upon you credibility and validation), however when those ambassadors do not support the BDS movement...invite them to leave immediately. And one more detail: to make sure you stay in business, contribute to the ongoing social problems - for that you need to make important alliances with some dodgy people in the business world and deepen them with the governments that feed you.

Non-governmental organisation: to be fundamentally governmental or not to be, that is the question.

How to do old school politics

You basically try to please Greeks and Trojans. As a politician, when seeking to be elected, you will promise people the whole world. You will promise change and a new era; you will promise to lower taxes, you will promise them that their problems will be addressed, you will promise them the moon. However, once you get what you want...forget the people.

If you are a good natured politician, with romantic views and proper values, know that you will sit in office and be briefed on what needs to be corrected about national policy; then once you voice your opinion, the establishment will look at you saying "Think again and re-phrase that." because there are certain mechanisms in place that are inconvenient to touch: Desert Money (which involves a lot of lobbying - another industry that is inconvenient to touch, be it legal or not); oil, gas, mineral and mining exploration businesses in countries that violate your principles and democratic values etc etc...so, swallow your pride and allow business as usual.

How to do new school politics

You welcome both Greeks and Trojans; however, you weigh the long term economic and national security benefits and costs of dealing with one and the other. If the Greeks are closer to you in terms of democratic principles and values, if they yield you competitive edge of your high-tech industries, intelligence and enhanced military capability then you know you need to support them. If the Trojans are far from you in terms of democratic principles and values; if, despite the trade between your countries, they inject money in your territory to mass convert people to their own belief system and to support attacks against national targets and interests...you need to keep them close yet send the right messages.

The politician of the new era is more brazen and less hypocritical, while maintaining convenient relationships with everyone in the Political Colosseum - including the little-yet-strategic ones and apparently little.

Politics is not an easy game. However, this is the 21st century and it is unacceptable that politicians still hold on to the old way of doing things...especially when the electorate is changing at a rapid pace.

  1. politics as they are now are an Hypocrisy almost closed system yet accepted chess game... occurred me that citizens are the key on the game... but they really have to know that ... all the best Max!

    1. Ciao Gallardo :D!

You are right. I just wonder how we are going to make them realise that fact...

G, thank you so much for your great comment :D.

    1. Hi Celia :D!

Darling, I am going to tell you something that I usually wouldn't: wake up and smell the coffee.
NGOs are as political as a political institution can be. What is sad is that NGOs like OXFAM are Muslim tools with access to every corner in the world. It's a fact.
But this doesn't mean that there aren't good NGOs who do their job in utter sincerity, because there are plenty of them out there that reject being political pawns.

Darling, thank you for your input :D.

      Cheers

    2. I follow Max here; Unfortunately there are plenty of examples where Max statements apply (Celia: could you name one where it doesn't?) I'll take this to the point where the small neighborhood institution invites the mayor to its anniversary event... and then you probably should know where it leads .... although I understand that the principles/objectives/mission are good intended and its much better their existence to general society than huge welfare states ... and as Peter Drucker said NGOs are here to stay...

  3. Wow, China is so good at creating diversions! The whole "diao yu" island hooplah is just such a diversion. Also, the evening news is full of reports about how horrible it must be to live in America.

Right? I learn a lot from China.
Wow, they are that afraid of America, huh?

  4. I have the feeling the whole world is creating in a diversion mode now. The news are boring, everything is boring and there's something in the air I can't explain...does anyone have this feeling too or is it just me?

    1. Hello Pietr :D!

No, you are not alone: there is something strange in the air indeed. Everything is still, too still, despite the events.

Pietr, thank you so much for your comment :D.

  5. From your description, it seems to me that not much has changed in demagoguery over the last 2,500 years. This reminded me of a earlier criticism of the electorate:

"But I, Critias, have always been consistently opposed to those who think there can be no good democracy until the slaves and the sort of people who would sell their country if they needed a drachma take part in the government ..." - Xenophon (~360BC) from Hellenica

So I am a little puzzled over your statement that "the electorate is changing at a rapid pace".

The only thing that might be different is that tools of demagoguery have systematically been embedded into our education system, so that the electorates of the western world are conditioned to flee sanity and embrace demagoguery. Thus, if people fear demagogues at all, this just causes them to embrace demagogues all the more, since the demagogues are always first to point at those who should be considered demagogues!

    1. Hey Looney :D!

That is what I am talking about: we have been doing the same bloody thing for the past 2,500 years. It is time to change.
Regarding Xenophon's words, I only have one thing to say: Victorian values.

The electorate is changing, the way they do their activism is also changing (look at Ukraine) as they want their voice to be heard and felt. You could argue that we have experienced this before, the spirit of revolutions and revolt, nevertheless it is a change regarding the previous status quo. And if we add technology to it...it increases the pace of that change. But politicians are not coping with it.

I agree with you on demagoguery though.

Looney, thank you so much for your awesome comment :D.

      Cheers

  6. Have you been following what is happening in my motherland? It is an election year and all the politicos have gone into over drive but are unable to fathom are come up with answers to a new phenomenon called the AAP. It is going to be a very interesting election come this summer.

Yes, I have been following the events in your country; and I can tell you that I am amused (your electoral period is more interesting than ours in Portugal). Ah, yes...the AAP; quite a social-oriented party, yes?
I am looking forward to seeing who will win...

Rummy, thank you ever so much for your comment :D.

  7. NGOs are a lie. Instead of minding their own business they meddle in politics. No wonder Putin threw them out!
Loved your old school vs new school politics, basically you are screwed you have to deal with both the bad and the good guys. If I were the Chinese I'd put my money in the virgin island myself! hahahaha

    1. Hi Adam :D!

lol Well, Putin threw them out because he was convinced they were working for the US and the UK.
It is basically that, yes. LOL Aaah, you admit you'd go to politics to get rich too?

Adam, thank you so so much for your input :D.

  8. I agree with Adam, Putin knew what he was doing when he went after NGOs. Bibi knows too.
What can I say? Politics is about money essentially so we can expect this sort of bullshit happening time and time again. As for distractions we were being distracted but then a US state department official decided to pull us out of the diversion and focus on her stupid words against the EU. Victoria Nuland screwed up big time!

True. Money makes the world go round...they say.
Well, it was quite a blunder. What surprises me is this people, professional and well trained, still have no situational awareness. They live in the past.

Ana, thank you so much for your comment :D.

  9. Politics 101 indeed. What's sad is not even charity is immune to politics, questionable governments use it to influence the foreign policy of any country holding a vote at the UN.
    Good job, darling!

  10. Oh wow Max...how much of these we see all of them everyday in our country these days. Just if you haven't seen, see the first big interview of the top political heir of our present dispensation and you would see all things you have mentioned above. BTW, in the said interview the public and especially the media had read through the lines and is being ridiculed like anything.

Coming to the topic, it amazes me how cutting across nations, cultures and diversities, the mindset of the politicians are one thing that is same all over the world and the irony is that legacy kept getting elected and proudly proclaim themselves to be the saviour of the masses. Alas! May the world be saved from these self-serving tyrants.

    1. Hi Kalyan :D!

I will try to watch on YouTube is available. That's what I am saying: the electorate is starting to change and do not fall for the same things as they did in the past - we can thank the social media for that too.

Politicians act the same way practically all over, which is sad. And those who try to change things are swallowed up by the system. But eventually everything will change as people refuse to be taken for granted or for fools.

"May the world be saved from these self-serving tyrants"

      Amen.

Kalyan, thank you so much for your comment :D.
