A Voice is Calling: Re-Take Gaza

Re-taking Gaza: a bad idea?

For the past weeks, an increasing number of voices have been expressing the need to re-take the Gaza Strip as a solution to the recent rocket barrage.
Hamas is weakened and removing the group from power would be easy for Israel, according to Major General (Res.) Amos Gilad. There isn't any doubt that the IDF is more than capable of taking Hamas down, despite all the threats that the organisation has made over the past weekend; however, what is the plan exactly?

"We tell the enemy and (Foreign Minister Avigdor) Liberman who is threatening to reoccupy Gaza that the time for your threats is over, (...) Any aggression or crime or stupidity you commit will cost you a very high price." - Ismail Haniyeh

It would be interesting to know how Mr Haniyeh intends to concretise those threats given the blows dealt to his organisation:

1. The seizure of Klos-C (carrying the famous forty 302-mm heavy rockets)
2. Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian conflict (which is causing the group to be attacked at home, in Lebanon; and most probably decreasing its availability to come to Hamas' rescue in case of a disturbance).
3. The Egyptian banning of the group, the seizure of all its assets and the block of 90% to 95% of the tunnels it used to smuggle weapons from the Sinai.
4. The outbidding strategy carried out by the Islamic Jihad (that vies for the control of the Gaza Strip).
5. The discovery of two major tunnels into Israel, by the IDF (one in October 2013 and another one last week).

In light of the present conjuncture, it is dubitable that Hamas is in position of making others pay "a very high price".
But going back to the original question; what's Israel's exact intention regarding Gaza:

a) Does it intend to depose Hamas and hand the strip over to Fatah/PLO (so that the Palestinian State can finally come into realisation, through the existence of a physical territory)?

or

b) Does it intend to re-occupy the strip until a peace agreement is signed with Abbas and his cronies?

I must admit that I would be more inclined to support option A (a demilitarised Gaza Strip; administered by PA, with the maritime blockade lifted and all), as a nth opportunity to the Arabs - to see if they could actually build a sustainable state and live in peace alongside the Jewish State. Certainly, this would imply replacing the Oslo Accords with a more viable conditional agreement.
If the PLO, the sole representative of the Arabs of Palestine, would fail to comply - and the terrorism would proceed - then the international community would see Fatah's real intentions and, be encouraged to support Israel's necessary actions (to achieve peace, once and for all).

If Israel coordinates the re-take of Gaza with Abu Mazen, perhaps it won't be such a bad idea after all...

Comments

  1. We can give them an nth opportunity but they will waste it once again and again and again cause they don't want a state, don't want self-determination (that is their biggest lie), they want the Jews out of Historical Palestine, period!
If I was Israel I'd retake Gaza and annex cause even if Fatah controls it the rockets will keep on coming. We annex it and then make our case to a failed international community, the same that allowed Russia to annex Crimea...

    1. Hi Mike :D!

I can't argue with that, given the history of these so-called peace negotiations, right?
I don't know if I agree with an annexation of Gaza; I mean, the world has allowed this situation go too far and now the "Palestinians" need to go somewhere...

Mike, thank you so much for your comment, my friend :D.

      Cheers

  2. Gaza has to be retaken without any doubt! The Islamic jihad has been throwing rockets, over 100, at Israel and then it says the attacks don't mean a declaration of war but part of the resistance struggle. Doesn't hamas control them? If Haniyeh doesn't control them then he is complicit and must be knocked out. God bless Israel and I am pro-Zionism. The word verification is Abraham: this is a sign!

  3. This article is juicy. Gaza has become a problem but if Israel would coordinate things with Abbas, the first option could actually work! Do you think the US would support such a move?

    1. Hey Celeste :D!

      It is, isn't it?
I don't know what the US would support any longer. I am still trying to understand what Sec Kerry is doing because it makes no sense at all; especially when we look at what is happening in the region. We need the US to have testicular fortitude...

Celeste, thank you so much for your comment, darling :D.

  4. Wow it is always the same when Max posts one of her Zionist articles! Gaza is only part of the liberated Palestinian territory, so what do you guys mean by a state in Gaza? What about the West Bank?

      How do you mean, dear?
What is the West Bank? I do not recognise that code.

  5. 1- Israel could help Fatah to retake Gaza and usher in a new peaceful period in the region, that is if Fatah really wants peace which I seriously doubt but at least Israel would give them that chance.
2- I agree with you. How can the US ever talk of following the intl law when America doesn't follow it herself? Putin knows it and it is taking advantage of it. He has realised that intl law and human rights is all a joke. Putin and China.
    Good job.

Yes, give them an opportunity to appease the allies, right?
Indeed, indeed...although Putin seems to be toning it down (troops began withdrawing from the Ukrainian border)...
      Thank you *bowing*.

Carl, thank you ever so much for your comment :D.

Thanks for always checking me out, Max. I'm okay. It's just that sometimes, things don't happen the way you imagined or expected it to happen. That's life, isn't it? Life happens! ;o)

  7. My opinion on these issues is clear: Samaria & Judea belong to Israel, so out with the Arabs from there. Gaza can go to the Arabs so they can build the fake state of "Palestine".
Should Israel help Fatah realizing their pronounced dream? If it means that they will get the hell out of our land, then sure, help them by all means necessary!
    Shabbat Shalom!

    1. Hi Ana :D!

It is so funny how the Arabs claimed the name "Palestine" to themselves when international treaties say that Palestine is the historical homeland of the Jewish People - what on earth are they trying to tell us?

Ana, my dear, thank you so much for your comment :D.

  8. Of course Obama had to be a hypocrite. How dares he to invoke the international law when his administration, and other previous administrations, does not respect the law when it comes to Israel? Unless, he is telling the world that hey now we have to start respecting the international law cause this Putin guy is acting out cause we haven't in the past?
Until then, Israel do not allow the Arabs to get our land! Am Yisrael Chai!
Bibi, good call on not releasing those terrorists. Enough of releasing criminals in the name of a fake peace agreement!

  10. There is a Sunni / Shia confrontation of some size evolving in the ME and the Arabs have for all practical purposes snubbed the West and have more or less told them to lay off. To do anything in Gaza now will be lighting a fuse and some major confrontatins can take place in the entire region. I am not saying that it will be a bad thing, but the cost in human terms will be very high in a region where there is already a massive refugee problem.

    1. Hi Rummy :D!

Yes, the Arabs told the West to lay off by sponsoring terrorism against the West, while at the same time not wanting them to seek oil in Africa - you see, what the Arabs do not understand is that if the West buys products from you, it will get involved in order to protect its investment...

I understand where you are coming from. And you have a point regarding the refugee problem: it may end up biting the West in its buttocks. However, I found what you said interesting: lighting a fuse to major confrontations but not necessarily a bad thing...indeed, indeed.

Rummy, thank you so much for your comment, my friend :D.

  11. Well if we see history, giving away disputed territories by the bigger/stronger nation to the smaller/weaker nation in the name of peace accord hasn't always been fruitful. It only makes the smaller nation more greedy and they try to push further and strive for bigger chunks as also the fact the so called peace accord never gets respected.

In the Gaza case, yes we can always take a chance and Israel may hand it over to Palestine but I would be little circumspect with the final outcome.
