Several world leaders delivered speeches, before the the annual meeting of the UNGA (Sept. 24-29). This week (i.e. one post per day) we will comment the speeches of four leaders due to content that caught our attention, for specific reasons.
Today, we'll comment the address of the President of the United States of America for its innovative components.
President Obama
"No children are born hating, and no children -- anywhere -- should be educated to hate other people. There should be no more tolerance of so-called clerics who call upon people to harm innocents because they’re Jewish, or because they're Christian, or because they're Muslim."
The US, despite the ambiguous stance of the State Department, is attentive to the incitement campaign carried out by Hamas, Fatah and other Islamic groups around the world. President Obama acknowledges that many Islamic leaders are teaching their children to hate the kuffar - which is unacceptable. But he was also sending a message to Christian and Jewish community leaders that engage in such practises as well (be it as a reaction to Islamist activities or not).
"That means cutting off the funding that fuels this hate. It’s time to end the hypocrisy of those who accumulate wealth through the global economy and then siphon funds to those who teach children to tear it down."
Arab nations (e.g. Qatar and Saudi Arabia) that enriched themselves due to our thirst for energy, should not bite the hand that feeds them - by sponsoring global terror. They will no longer be able to buy their way out of crises.
"It is time to acknowledge the destruction wrought by proxy wars and terror campaigns between Sunni and Shia across the Middle East. (..) So let’s be clear: This is a fight that no one is winning."
Iran (through Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad), Saudis and Qataris (through Al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham, Hamas, Fatah, Taliban etc) have given birth to monsters that have turned against Muslims all over the world. Their plan didn't work: America and Israel have not been destroyed. Time to revert such plans for the sake of Muslims in the ME and worldwide.
"Understand, the situation in Iraq and Syria and Libya should cure anybody of the illusion that the Arab-Israeli conflict is the main source of problems in the region. For far too long, that's been used as an excuse to distract people from problems at home. The violence engulfing the region today has made too many Israelis ready to abandon the hard work of peace."
Finally, a world leader has the fortitude to see and say the obvious: the Arab-Israeli conflict is not the origin of the destabilisation in the Middle East.
Note how POTUS did not say "Palestinian-Israeli conflict" but "Arab-Israeli conflict" - President Obama finally admitted that the whole Arab World has been sponsoring that conflict for over 65 years in order to destroy the only Jewish State in the world. Pres. Obama is re-affirming the US support to Israel and stating a near-future change in American policy regarding how it deals with Israel and its neighbours.
"So long as I am President, we will stand up for the principle that Israelis, Palestinians, the region and the world will be more just and more safe with two states living side by side, in peace and security."
President Obama is telling the Arab nations that it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is and encourage "Palestine" to take whichever offer is coming their way. (NB: the president said "side by side" which suggests that he may be ready to divert from the plan laid out by him in the MENA Speech, on the 19th of May 2011 "We believe the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states." - could he be acknowledging the Egyptian offer [i.e. the Sinai Option]?).
In sum: POTUS' address was worthy of a world leader. He addressed all the issues that afflict our globe today - ISIL/IS, the Ukrainian crisis, the Iranian nuclear question, Ebola in West Africa, the need for change in the Arab World - and, as a leader of the biggest world power, he engaged in self-criticism. President Obama's speech was also a re-assertion that the US is ready to lead again.

For as long as I remember Obama has always referred to the Arab-Israeli conflict that way. I don't remember hearing him say "Palestinian" cause he knows, as we all know, that Arabs fuel that conflict to distract us all from their deception! I think Obama's speech was very good and I agree, it was refreshing and clear about America's intentions. Death to ISIL!
ReplyDeleteBar the Arabs, who are also so called allies of the USA, the world knows exactly what needs to be done to bring about peace in Israel/Palestine. The POTUS has not said anything new and I found his speech lacklustre and without the oomph that he is capable of bringing into his speeches.
ReplyDeleteThe man is for once direct and open in a speech and still people don't like it, unf***ingbeliavable! This must be the most sincere speech ever given by Obama, he means business. Now this is change we can believe in!
ReplyDeleteSalut, ma belle! Well, Obama surprised me by his aggressiveness; he singled out Arab states and he openly criticized them for their role in terrorism. At last the man pointed the finger at Hamas and others like him cause the hypocrisy has been so big that I had been waiting to see who'd talk about it first! Bien, I was counting on Europe to do it but after listening to Lichtentstein's FM discussing women and blah blah blah I lost all hope.

It's indubitably a more aggressive speech and in that alone, it's politically refreshing.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Max: this is a great idea and thanks for your comments. Number two: I disagree with Rummuser, deeply; cause this speech was nothing like what we've heard before! This time Obama had the guts to tell the Arabs like it is, he dispelled the illusion that Israel and those so-called Palis are the source of problems in MENA, the guy called on the Muslim youth to stop being thugs and actually do something constructive in their lives but the most beautiful aspect of it was: he said America despite her flaws remains an example for the world!

I'll say only one thing: darn awesome! Finally Obama in a world stage says it: the Arabs have been destabilizing the world for years and then blame everything on the Jews! Time to stop!!
ReplyDeleteThe Israeli right is mad cause he said too many Israelis are quitting on peace: I know I am! I quit on peace with those Arabs, every time we gave them something for peace they returned our efforts with rockets, rocks and recently abductions! NO MORE!
I didn't watch it but I like the parts Max selected. So Obama had the balls to tell the Arabs off, huh? Bout time too! I watched Netanyahu's and the dude was so awesome that I actually applauded him hehehe. Still there are some people, journalists and so called experts that found nothing special about it, did we watch the same speech, folks? Anyway, I'm leaving my comment now, I'm sure you post something about Bibi too, cause I'm leaving, girl. I'm off for the Yom Kippur and Sukkot, will be back after the chagim. Soooo....Tzom Qal to everybody and Chag Sukkot Sameach!
ReplyDeleteThe actions the president has taken may not be enough, but it has certainly surprised me in what he is doing. I did watch much of the speech and still make the observation that Obama does not believe in the existence of either religion or ideology.
ReplyDeleteThe other point here is that Judaism and Christianity both believe that children are born with a sin nature, that will tend to hate other tribes as a result of things that are innate. Before Darwin worship went PC, they would agree that hate was a natural consequence of survival of the fittest. It is remarkable that someone would believe that children will naturally love one another unless they are explicitly trained to do the opposite.
