Training Jedi Knight Types Lesson 4: Elbow Waza - Part II

By Stephen Cheney

What Principles does this waza seek to Teach: and thus what can you Learn from Practicing this waza?

  • That when close to danger you are not helpless.
  • That the distance between you and your opponent decides what weapon you can use.
  • That you must obtain the correct distance needed to best deliver any waza or strike.
  • That you must use All of your body in any strike.
  • That your body’s mass is moved from the hips and the hips draw movement from the leverage of the legs against the ground.
  • However hard a fist can hit, an elbow can hit harder.
  • That it is difficult for an Aggressor to see any blow coming from below his eyes and chin when it rises up his centreline from close on his body.
What does this waza FEEL like?

Like you are stretching your body.
Feel as if you were a Rhino and your Rhino horn is your elbow. Hit with as if a Rhino moves behind your horn. As in the spirit of Merlin the Druidic wizard from Wales: Your mind is an infinite creator. It can create change. Direct your mind to become what you wish. Fight like a different creature. You know the nature of a rhinoceros, FEEL like a rhino, BE a rhino, attack like a rhino. Later enjoy the beauties of nature as only its creatures can.

What does this waza FEEL like to the enemy?

The impact of the thick solid bone of the elbow into the body feels like a sword point or lance has thrusted in.

Some Other Applications

REAR BEAR HUG

When Bear-hugged from BEHIND around your arms

Deliver a rear elbow strike by:

  • Breathe in to expand your chest. Suddenly breathe out to shrink it, Drop your hips downwards as you pull your elbows upward.
  • Dropping your hips whenever you are touched allows you to gain balance, stability and mobility, and collect force from the Planet Earth by way of levering with your legs.
  • Thrust both your open hands straight out to your front, so straightening your arms and bumping his surrounding arms more upward.
  • Looking behind you as much as you can, keeping your hands open, Suddenly reverse the direction and thrust an elbow to the rear into his Solar Plexus if possible.
  • Use that distraction to fully turn to face him and kick him in the knee to hamper his running and chasing ability, then run away to a safe area.

The forward thrust of your arms into vacant space gives you the distance in which to build momentum for your rearward thrust. Just as anyone or vehicle backs up to gain space to run forward. If when you try to thrust your elbows to the rear the attacker is holding on too tight, then before he lifts you off the ground:

1. Step to the side enough to straddle one of his legs.

2. Rear your head back to deliver a backward head butt to gain the attention of his mind. Fill the mind of the enemy with distraction and you gain the initiative.

3. Now use this moment gained to quickly bend forward and looking at his leg, reach down with both hands to grasp the ankle of his leg that is in-between yours.

4. Sit on his THIGH as you lever his leg upwards (care in practice that you do not sit too hard or drop back down on his thigh as you might break his leg). You pull up with your hands and press down with your backside. The levering will accelerate him rearward and he will fall heavily on his back, letting go with his arms in order to break his fall.

5. Retain your hold on his leg, using it as a guide as you raise your inside leg up high and stomp down and backward onto his groin. Let go and leave. There is always more than one way to skin a cat, or to stomp on a cockroach.

FRONT BEAR HUG

When an attempt is made (which you should see: Awareness), to Bear-hug you from the FRONT around your arms:

  • You are inside of the Aggressor’s surrounding arms as they reach out to lock onto you. You should always be standing with your knees slightly bent.
  • Step in to be close enough to deliver an elbow up under their chin. Seek to knock that chin up off their head. Straighten your bent legs to propel your body up into the blow.

The sudden compression at the rear of their head may be enough to knock them out. This is the finishing strike that all boxers seek to achieve with a close uppercut to the chin.

Deadly Attack on You

If the situation is especially dangerous (gang surrounding, weapons in view), you may be able to, when you step forward, to tread firmly on his foot and keep pressing. With his foot pressed as he falls down his ankle may break. This would greatly discourage the minds of any other attackers from thinking that you are an easy target.
When with a helpful partner always take your foot off before they go backward off balance.

If the Bully succeeds in wrapping around your arms before you can strike

With your arms held downward, move them to the front of your body and stab hard your fingertips into the crease that goes from the top of his thighs into his groin. That will bend him forward and give you a gap to take advantage of to immediately deliver an uppercut with your elbow.

Whenever an opponent is so tall that you cannot hope to strike their head: Using this stab (or even a punch) to the thigh crease will bring their head forward and down enough for you to attack.

If you fall on a bully

Put the tip of your elbow between you as you go down. On the ground hit his Solar Plexus or Groin with your elbow and get up and run away. Never stay to wrestle with a body far heavier than your own. There also may be mates of the bully who will come in and kick your head in if you stay on the ground.

Boxer

If a Boxer is punching at your upper body and head with bare fists, and you are blocking that with your vertical forearms: You can ram an elbow into his fist. That will wreck his fist: fight over. You may have a sore elbow, but his fist will be damaged. An elbow against a fist is no contest. Other methods to use against a boxer will be covered later.

  1. I didn't know we could ram an elbow into someone's fist and that it would wreck it - it must hurt like hell though. Yes, please, teach us more about boxing. Thanks, Stephen.
