Qual cor tradisti?

“Qual cor tradisti, qual cor perdesti, questa orrenda ti manifesti; da me fuggire tentasti invano, crudel Romano, tu sei con me. Un nume, un fato di te più forte ci vuol uniti in vita e in morte; sul rogo istesso che mi divora, sotterra ancora sarò con te.” (in Norma by Vincenzo Bellini)

“The heart you betrayed, the heart you lost, see in this dreadful hour what heart it was; in vain you sought to flee from me; cruel Roman, at last you are with me. A god, a fate stronger than you wills us together in life and in death, in the same pyre which consumes me; I will be with you even under earth.” (in Norma by Vincenzo Bellini)

Pollione betrayed Norma. She feel in love with him, gave him two beautiful children, and years later he fell in love with Adalgisa…

This week I will share with you two stories of heartbreak and betrayal.

Catherine is madly in love with her boyfriend Tarik; she lives for him, each of her heart beat pumps his name throughout her veins, making her cheeks blush with love. She seems to be the apple of his eyes too. They keep a steady relationship for 10 years. One day she finds out she’s pregnant; she is so happy…her dream finally comes true: having a baby from the love of her life. She gets home and prepares herself to tell Tarik, and when she hears «Cathy, we need to talk”», she becomes excited imagining that he’ll pop the question…

«My parents found me a wife; she’s from our circle, her dad makes business with my father; so we (my family and I) decided it is a good idea…» Catherine can hardly believe in what she’s hearing: she turns pale, her gaze gets lost, her mind wanders yet she still hears «…I will keep you, though…the deeds of the flat are already in your name; I’ll give you an allowance…nothing has changed, darling!» she places her hand on her belly, grabs her purse and leaves the house…in her mind she visualises an abortion clinic…

Sophia strolls around her neighbourhood when her eyes meet Bernard’s; they instantly fall in love! They talk for hours in a small garden nearby her house, and agree to start a relationship.
Sophia loves Bernard passionately; whenever he calls her “So” her whole body shivers, her skin gets all goosy and she yearns for him like she never has for anyone before…

Bernard is a loving and considering chap; he’s the kind of man who does anything for the woman he loves; he is like…the man most women dream of…

After 3 happy years, Bernie is returning home from work when a short old lady tells him «Child, she does not deserve you. Before you get home you will know what I mean!» Bernie frowns and when he turns to reply, he sees nothing but air…He is so in love that he decides to pass by the spot where he met So «I just might propose to her here!» then, he hears her laughter, he turns around…Sophia is flirting, kissing and cuddling with another…woman. Bernard becomes speechless (he’s in shock). In his mind he beholds all the possible things he could do to his girlfriend [slap her, choke her or even kill her…]; he feels sick to his stomach… «Quite a stab!» he utters while walking away…

Bernie is on his way home while thinking «I’ll pack her stuff and throw them out the window…» when suddenly Catherine, crying, bumps into him «I am so sorry!» she says, he looks at her with a mix of compassion and tenderness in his eyes «Are you all right? Can I be of any assistance?»…

  2. Hello Scott,

Thank you :). I wanted to make it light (since we are in December, and people have their minds on festivities), but as always I had to add something to make people think...

  3. And so is the tangled web of love when we get into relationships. They are all not bad though. Some of us have long tender love affairs with our spouses.

Betrayal is a scourge on the heart of love. It makes love so bitter and putrid and I know some people never get over it. I think that when we commit to one person, we have to commit to them with all of our heart - - period.

I think if most men found Sophia in that situation, they would be quite happy. (at least in their fantasy. ;D)

    Great post!

  6. Alexys,

"Some of us have long tender love affairs with our spouses." - Amen to that :)!

I agree with you: when we engage in a relationship we must commit to one person, and above all we must respect him/her. Respect is an important ingredient of any kind of relationship; but when love, sentiment, is involved we must treat the other person with care, tenderness (even if we find out that we don't love him/her after all, that it was sheer physical attraction...)...and absolute respect; which is a simple attitude and a very much appreciated one :).
It is a shame when people have their heartbroken and then can't seem to get over it. There is always a second chance, and people should be open to it...

"I think if most men found Sophia in that situation, they would be quite happy. (at least in their fantasy. ;D)" - LOL LOL LOL LOL indeed LOL *nodding*.

    Great comment, Alexys...Thanks :)!

  18. Hello Anna,

lol...I was listening to "Qual cor tradisti?" (from Norma, a gorgeous opera) and I thought: "poor Norma to be back stabbed like that...!"; and then I started imagining several possible stories of heartbreak, and I decided to write them down...and thus Catherine and Bernard, Sophia and Tarik were born lol ;).
Before Xmas I will have to offer Amelia a sequel lol...she's curious about the ending :).

Have you noticed that follow-up comments is down? What a mess...

  22. Max, the good thing I remembered that I left a comment here, yes it was mess, but hey we are back. Thanks for the update, I guess I will be waiting for one too. Just sad that Catherine was actually thinking about abortion clinic...did she go for it? This is something I don't believe, not matter how it was created. It is not the baby fault, and I think God will find a way to protect those children. My sister's in law aunt couldn't have children, so she adopted one boy and one girl, and I always have tears in my eyes from where these children came, and God Bless the lady for adopting. Her brother's wife also cannot have children, and they will be adopting one sometimes in April/May, and I know I am bringing God to it again, but God Bless them too. These children are very lucky to have such parents now. And here I am with my diversion....lol. Anna :) PS Nice idea for a post.

It was sad, yes...but you will have the chance to find out if she went for it or not, next Teusday :)!! I am with you: I don't condone abortion either; but a lot of people do it, unfortunately...and for the wrong reasons too *nodding*.
God bless that lady indeed...she was brave :)! May God bless every person who adopts a child for the right reasons (cause there are those who adopt kids to abuse them *nodding*): love, nurture, tenderness, care, protection :)!

  32. Max, thanks and I will be back then to read your story, curious though. Yes you are right, the adoption can be done for the wrong reasons too, and I think someone told me story one day how very nice beautiful girl was adopted, and the step parents treated her like a little robot, there was no emotion, just almost like 'I did you a favor for adopting you'. Your other case, is very bad, and I just hope there is not much of an abuse out there. It is sad. Oh glad that you liked my diversion, thus kind of sad. Thanks for listening, Anna :)

  47. Hi Max;

Sorry I am so late here, very creative and interesting story, and very provocative along with the comments.

As so many good points have already been made (and needless to say I am against premeditated baby murder also known as abortion) I will focus on a factor that has I believe not been overly touched upon….

Was it a coincidence that Bernie bumped into Catherine? Or was there a God ordained purpose behind it? Does God at times touch people’s lives in this way?

I note that both end of story characters had their names shortened during the story while the other characters do not. Bernard to Bernie and Catherine to Kate, I am wondering if this was a particular literary device you chose to use for a specific reason?

By the way was this Sophia in your story a play on the false pagan concept of the descent of Sophia and her “relationship” with Adam and Eve (also a false belief of Gnostics called Sethians)?

Was Sophia kissing Tarik’s arranged wife?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi LS;

As I said in the Xmas tag: Welcome back to the Maxcomment-sphere *bow*! With this being said: you are quite excused lol :D.

"very creative and interesting story, and very provocative along with the comments." - LOL thank you *bowing*! Provocative...noooo; it is a simple entertaining short story lol...me and provocation do not keep society LOL LOL....

"(and needless to say I am against premeditated baby murder also known as abortion)" - I am with you on this one...but you need to read the sequel to this article :)...

"Was it a coincidence that Bernie bumped into Catherine?" - no, there are no coincidences. Plus their meeting was prepared by the short old lady, who warned Bernard against Sophia (otherwise he wouldn't have met Catherine). The Angel told him, without saying it, that his disappointment would be the prelude to his happiness ("she doesn't deserve you", implying that someone does).

"Or was there a God ordained purpose behind it?" - but of course. Bernard and Catherine were meant to be together (since the day they were born); but they had to experience other relationships (and pain, disappointment that came with it) in order to better value their new future: Catherine+Bernard.

"Does God at times touch people’s lives in this way?" - I strongly believe He does; specially when a Higher purpose is involved. I even dare saying that He does it all the time, but some people are stubborn; and eventually God turns His face and allows them to suffer the consequences of going against His plans.

"I note that both end of story characters had their names shortened during the story while the other characters do not. Bernard to Bernie and Catherine to Kate, I am wondering if this was a particular literary device you chose to use for a specific reason?" - (Catherine was actually shortened to Cathy); indeed it was (you are very good *clap clap clap*, I am impressed); I used the diminutive to express endearment; and also to give the reader a hint that justice would be done to Bernie and Cathy :).

"By the way was this Sophia in your story a play on the false pagan concept of the descent of Sophia and her “relationship” with Adam and Eve (also a false belief of Gnostics called Sethians)?" - To tell you the truth, I have never read about that false concept (but now I am curious; I will have to do some research). Sophia represents a group of women, I came across recently...nasty women *nodding*.

"Was Sophia kissing Tarik’s arranged wife?" - LOL LOL LOL no, how could she? Tarik's arranged wife belonged to his circle (meaning that she was a Muslim); and Muslim women are very modest, and extremely earnest in their behaviour... :).

This was a great comment, LS...thank you :)!

    Cheers

Interesting….are we then puppets being forced to do everything, if so then we can hardly be held responsible for our thoughts, words or actions….now I would say that within the guarded threshold of God’s plans He chooses to allow randomness by His Sovereign will. He does not force everything to happen….

I am VERY interested in your view on angels (I note your capitalization of the word). Would you elaborate upon your thoughts on this issue?

I like the way you used the implication of someone deserving him, you used an interesting infrastructure to carry along the story here….

  50. LS!

" enter the MAX-zone….the sphere of Maxdom…." - LOL LOL I loved it :D! Hello my friend :)...

"I dip my toe in to test the temperature….ahhhh….time to soak….LOL" - LOL LOL *nodding*.

"Entertaining yes but you are never simple Maximus! LOL" - LOL LOL and to think that all this time I've been thinking that I am quite simple :).

"Interesting….are we then puppets being forced to do everything, if so then we can hardly be held responsible for our thoughts, words or actions….now I would say that within the guarded threshold of God’s plans He chooses to allow randomness by His Sovereign will. He does not force everything to happen…." - LOL I believe we have already discussed this in one of your articles...lol. I didn't say that we are puppets, I said that Bernie and Catherine meeting had a purpose; and so it was pre-established that they should stay together. If God forced things to happen, we wouldn't have to go through so much suffering, I suppose. He designs the plan, and humans break their heads until His plan is fully accomplished. God designs the what, when and where; what happens until the mission is fullfilled is entirely our responsibility.

"I am VERY interested in your view on angels (I note your capitalization of the word). Would you elaborate upon your thoughts on this issue?" - lol Angels are the messengers of God (nowadays I call them "I Messaggeri" - in Italian it sounds perfect; as if God Himself if uttering it), They descend on earth to either transmit messages and/or to defend people. But I also believe that they warn us against danger too; too bad many are not attentive *nodding*...

"I like the way you used the implication of someone deserving him, you used an interesting infrastructure to carry along the story here…." - thank you *bowing*.

"We are pretty close on this one….lets celebrate with a sip of cold water! Mmmm good!" - *rising my bottle of water* and now *taking a sip*, mmm good indeed...let's carry on! :)...

"I like that…very nice….diminutive and hint….nice echoes!" - lol thank you *bowing*! My, my, my...that water felt really good lol :)

"I love it when a writer telescopes events or groups of persons into a single event or character; it usually makes a dramatic impact as it does in your story! Well done!" - Oh my...merci beaucoup, mon ami *bowing*! Yes, synecdoches are very useful...lol.

"LOL LOL LOL No comment! LOL" - LOL LOL I knew you wouldn't :).

"Thanks Max…all this aside I enjoyed the story also at a superficial level, as entertainment….well done!" - you are welcome :). LOL well, I tried to make it superficial, but...I just couldn't LOL :)! I am glad that you liked it, LS *bowing*!

  51. Hey Max,

A suggestion......since this short story seems to be the first of several parts, and the fact that you sued this as your "Representative Post" for the writing category, your should go back to each one and link it the next, like I did with my "Success" series.

That way when someone clicks on the link they can continue through the entire series.
