Under threat

Portugal is under a terrorist threat. The government convened, during the past weekend, after having been warned by Spain about two Pakistani terrorists who allegedly sought harbour in our country.
Since the 9/11 the Portuguese have witnessed the world changing: tight security in airports and aircrafts; paranoia; wars; more terrorist attacks (England, Spain, The Netherlands, Turkey…); the chaos generated by Islam, which led to censorship in Europe; empowerment of security forces; eavesdropping, tapped phones with no court order; the stigma of the Islamic community…
Amazingly some Portuguese socialist Euro-MPs (along with their continental Euro-fellows) engaged in a crusade against the American security forces claiming that the Americans were clearly violating the human rights of their terror prisoners, and using European locations and air space in order to implement their “rendition program”, thus making Europe its accomplice in these Human Rights violations (as if Europe were that abiding).

The rendition program was developed by the CIA in the mid-1990's in order to track down and dismantle militant Islamic organisations in the Middle East. "Extraordinary rendition" operations were meant to apprehend terrorists abroad, usually without the knowledge of the host government.
It is said that during this operations torture is applied to detainees, therefore going against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
When a bunch of cold-blooded, brainless, insensitive murderers plan to rip lives of innocent people; aren’t they exercising the cruellest form of “Extraordinary rendition” (since innocents are kidnapped from life, blindfolded by explosions and when they open their eyes they are being interrogated in the after-life by the Karma police)?

For the past two years, the Portuguese Euro-MP, Ana Gomes, has been screaming at 7 seas and winds that the American Security forces are criminals, and deserve to be brought to international justice.
Of course she can afford to hysterically scream her lungs out since no member of her family was ever involved in these past and current terrorist attacks (and God willing she and her family never will). One wonders whether all these Euro-MPs that declared war to the forces that strive to keep the world safe (since whenever there is a world crisis everybody turns to the Americans for some sort of aid) would hold the same position if tragedy would knock on their door…

Reflection is the prophylactics of ridicule.
Euro-MP Ana Gomes defends that terrorism should be dealt with without affecting the perpetrators’ dignity.
Let’s assume that Portugal catches the two alleged terrorists: should its national security forces (SIS – Serviço de Informação e Segurança) extract information from them over a café au lait and a croissant with duck fumé?
Is this the interrogation method that Euro-crusade-MPs suggest? Or are they implying that security forces should spank them as long as they leave no visible bruises?

Evidently nobody agrees with torture, however what is the most efficient form of extracting information that will be vital to keep all of us safe?

  1. Max, girl I hate terrorism. I think this is major issues today, and God forbid that they get to the nuclear weapons to destroy the humanity with the force of pressing a simple button (let's just hope that it isn't that easy today). The sad part is we are killing each other, instead of enjoying the beauty of life. I am fortunate to have that kind of life, where many don't even know what is the definition of beautiful life (have you ever seen videos where children are thought to fight and stone other people?). However, I still think that good will over come evil. Thanks for sharing your insights. Anna :)

  3. Hi Max;

Very interesting article that goes well with a current article of mine!

The Scream is pertinent to your article, well chosen!

The Pakistani’s arrested in Barcelona and Portugal are innocent till proven guilty, as you mentioned in your article the 3 arrested in Portugal “allegedly sought harbour”.

The fatalities of the Canadian Forces have now climbed to 77 (third behind the US and UK) in Afghanistan. Canada, the UK and Netherlands are currently the three land forces engaging the enemy in Afghanistan; it is a NATO mission being acted out at the request of the UN.

So where are the rest of our “allies” like Germany and France in actively engaging the enemy? They show a lack of leadership in direct proportion to what they should be doing and abilities to take action. Perhaps they are afraid of the reactions of their respective Islamic communities. Perhaps they should be more concerned about what will happen with that community if the mission in Afghanistan fails.

Do people really think you can build a nation state, schools and hospitals without protecting the population from those who are so full of hate and violence?

Those who claim to care for the rights of women should be ashamed for their lack of support for the mission in Afghanistan. Feminists in the West decry a man holding a door open for a woman and say nothing about the horrors visited upon the women in the Islamic world, and which Islamic terrorists desire to exact upon everybody everywhere.

Do they say nothing and do next to nothing because of their hate of George W. Bush and his actions in regards to Iraq? Is it because of his stated faith convictions? Perhaps those that hate Bush should apply a bit of love towards those who need our help in Afghanistan. Are they against the police using force to keep them safe in their own neighborhoods?

Now back to torturing suspected terrorists… The key word is “suspected”. Until one is found guilt in a court of law they are innocent. Therefore torturing them at that stage is no different from torturing any innocent citizen. Are each of us willing to be tortured because of government suspicions? If we cross that bridge then we are the same as those who are devoutly following the Quran and Haddith to terrorism.

Yet these words seem to ring hollow in the face of potential imminent horrific terrorist violence such as a nuclear blast, or destruction of a nuclear power facility….

No citizen of a western democracy has total freedom, that kind of freedom is not democracy but anarchy.

In Canada probably the most suitable way of dealing with the problem is by putting the accused in as goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs…. Or perpetual bungee jumping from the CN tower….

In the US they should be forced to watch Oprah…

In Europe/Portugal perhaps an endless loop of Bush speeches, or watching a full season of baseball…

Keep in mind that the terrorists may like spankings….

Thought provoking article my friend, definitely not torturous to read…

  4. Anna,

Terrorism put the world under a constant state of allert: it's awful *nodding*.

Well, Portugal was actually a bit ecarté from this issue (the Portuguese would watch it on the news and be concerned with relatives in the USA, UK, Spain, etc; but never thought that their country would ever be under threat as well...they were that relaxed in life); I think that only now they have realised how serious the issue is.

"and God forbid that they get to the nuclear weapons to destroy the humanity with the force of pressing a simple button (let's just hope that it isn't that easy today)." - I don't think it will come to that, darling. I believe that that is one of the reasons why American soldiers and their allies are fighting for...to keep us safe.

Unfortunately, to keep peace humans must kill other humans, it is the price of being safe; isn't it? That is why we must be grateful for having a peaceful and beautiful life; cause somebody's child is fighting for us to have that type of existence :).

"I am fortunate to have that kind of life, where many don't even know what is the definition of beautiful life (have you ever seen videos where children are thought to fight and stone other people?)." - Amen :). Yes, I have seen those videos, and I must tell you that it is a violation of the Children's rights. Children are to go to school and play; they are not supposed to learn how to fight nor how to stone others *nodding*. I abhor enticement to violence, specially in children....

"However, I still think that good will over come evil. Thanks for sharing your insights." - I also like to think that good will over come evil; but still evil will always lurk...after all we are humans, and unfortunately humans are prone to evil *nodding*. You are most welcome *bowing*.

I would like to thank you for sharing your words of hope with us :D!

    Cheers

  5. Hello Delirious,

"I think when someone chooses to attack others, they lose their right to dignity." - it is a hard question indeed. If I were a mother and my child would be killed by a terrorist, would I care if that person's rights would be violated or not? What about my rights of not being physically (my child was ripped from me) and psychologically (needless to say what happens to the mind when one loses one's child) hurt?

"This might come across as heartless, but if a little "persuasion" will protect countless other lives, I say the end is worth the means" - it doesn't come across as heartless at all, D; I understand where you are coming from. I also agree that there is a price for safety.

Thank you for your most appreciated view on this delicate issue :).

    Cheers

  6. Hello LS;

"Very interesting article that goes well with a current article of mine!" - indeed, indeed :). I have read your article and I must say that it was very good (as always) :).

"The Scream is pertinent to your article, well chosen!" - thank you *bowing*! I love this painting, ever since I saw here in Lisboa at the Calouste Gulbekian Foundation....

"The Pakistani’s arrested in Barcelona and Portugal are innocent till proven guilty, as you mentioned in your article the 3 arrested in Portugal “allegedly sought harbour”." - they are 2 and they have not been caught yet (if we are talking about Portugal). Actually according to the Roman Law (which is the one implemented in Portugal) they are guilty until proven innocent. I was being suspicious when I used the word "allegedly" lol.

"The fatalities of the Canadian Forces have now climbed to 77 (third behind the US and UK) in Afghanistan. Canada, the UK and Netherlands are currently the three land forces engaging the enemy in Afghanistan; it is a NATO mission being acted out at the request of the UN." - you don't agree with the Canadian participation in the war in Afghanistan?

"So where are the rest of our “allies” like Germany and France in actively engaging the enemy? They show a lack of leadership in direct proportion to what they should be doing and abilities to take action". - Germany caused embarassment when their troops took pictures over skeletons, in Afghanistan, while wearing Nazi symbols...so, they were retrieved. France (in Mr. Chirac's era) never agreed to this war (nor the one in Iraq), so they didn't send soldiers.

"Perhaps they are afraid of the reactions of their respective Islamic communities. Perhaps they should be more concerned about what will happen with that community if the mission in Afghanistan fails." - it could very well be, my friend. France has issues with its Islamic community for years; and everytime the community decides to manifest itself against gov. decisions it is a mess (it is a very delicate issue for the French). We should all be concerned with what would happen if the Afghani mission fails...

"Do people really think you can build a nation state, schools and hospitals without protecting the population from those who are so full of hate and violence?" - that is an excellent question, my friend...sometimes I think that people live in constant delusion...

"Those who claim to care for the rights of women should be ashamed for their lack of support for the mission in Afghanistan. Feminists in the West decry a man holding a door open for a woman and say nothing about the horrors visited upon the women in the Islamic world, and which Islamic terrorists desire to exact upon everybody everywhere." - ok, have you come across with feminists recently, or soomething? This is not the first time you speak against them (which I totally understan, but I am just surprised lol) within the same week lol. Anyway, needless to say that I agree that feminists are fighting the wrong war, nowadays (holding a door for a woman is what men should do). As long as there are women with no freedom of speech, expression or any kind of freedom...the fight is not over. Since in the West women have conquered many rights, they now feel that they don't have any valid cause to fight for, and start searching for silly things to pick on men *nodding*. I say that they should follow your advice :).

"Do they say nothing and do next to nothing because of their hate of George W. Bush and his actions in regards to Iraq? Is it because of his stated faith convictions?" - hate? How can somebody hate someone they don't know in persona? That is just silly *nodding*. If feminists are against Bush is because they are not focused on the real world wide feminine issues.

"Perhaps those that hate Bush should apply a bit of love towards those who need our help in Afghanistan. Are they against the police using force to keep them safe in their own neighborhoods?" - lol no, I don't think they would be against the police for ensuring safety in their neighbourhood. But perhaps they would be against it if male police officers would hold the door for them LOL :).

"Now back to torturing suspected terrorists… The key word is “suspected”. Until one is found guilt in a court of law they are innocent." - in Portugal one is guilty until proven innocent. Are you saying that torture is permissable in this case?

"Therefore torturing them at that stage is no different from torturing any innocent citizen. Are each of us willing to be tortured because of government suspicions? If we cross that bridge then we are the same as those who are devoutly following the Quran and Haddith to terrorism." - I would like to think that our security forces do not systematically arrest innocent people. However I would like to ask: what would you consider torture, exactly?

"Yet these words seem to ring hollow in the face of potential imminent horrific terrorist violence such as a nuclear blast, or destruction of a nuclear power facility…." - I hear you...

"No citizen of a western democracy has total freedom, that kind of freedom is not democracy but anarchy." - yes. And I would like to add that "freedom" has a price.

"In Canada probably the most suitable way of dealing with the problem is by putting the accused in as goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs…. Or perpetual bungee jumping from the CN tower…." - LOL LOL *nodding*...yes, that is quite a solution for it LOL....

"In the US they should be forced to watch Oprah…" - LOL LOL LOL LOL this is a good one LOL...

"In Europe/Portugal perhaps an endless loop of Bush speeches, or watching a full season of baseball…" - Bush speeches are funny lol, hardly torture. Baseball...not a torture either lol....

"Keep in mind that the terrorists may like spankings…." - LOL LOL LOL LOL true, true....*nodding*.

"Thought provoking article my friend, definitely not torturous to read… " - thank you, my friend *bowing*!

Your delightful comment was much appreciated, thank you; LS :D!

    Cheers

"...what is the most efficient form of extracting information that will be vital to keep all of us safe?"

  9. Hi Max, yes it is sad, that the Portugal is affected also, it is almost like they starting to pick on the small countries now. I remember those crazy thoughts when they said that there may be an attack on Canada.

Max you said: 'Unfortunately, to keep peace humans must kill other humans, it is the price of being safe; isn't it? That is why we must be grateful for having a peaceful and beautiful life; cause some body's child is fighting for us to have that type of existence :). - sad but true Max.

Max you said: 'Children are to go to school and play; they are not supposed to learn how to fight nor how to stone others *nodding*. I abhor enticement to violence, specially in children....' - I am with you girl.

and Max you said: ' and unfortunately humans are prone to evil *nodding*.' - yes in deed it is unfortunate thing, however, I still think that there is a small good seed within all of us, and if it is watered it will grow. Max, I have to tell you, I always hope for the best in people.

Max thanks again, you are the best already. Anna :)

  10. I refuse to be scared by terrorist threats because that's how we are supposed to react.

I also sometimes think we look at terrorism the wrong way. Sure, some terrorists are pure evil, but some are just doing that out of ignorance. Same way the USA are scared of everyone because they don't know the world. Not talking about all Americans of course, just the current gov'.

  11. Yes, we should be tough on terrorists to protect ourselves because our survival depends on it. While we ought to recognize limits to our conduct of warfare/interrogation/torture, we must also do what must be done to ensure that these ethics, our way of life, continues to the next generations.

Ah Max, I just did another campaign cartoon, they're fun to make haha. You should do some too.

  12. Interestingly enough, last night I just watched "Rendition". Before watching it, I didn't know what it meant. It was REALLY sadistic! :-((( You should see the movie, Max.

Anyway, I have GREAT news: the full-time Finnish course is starting soon!!! From Feb 4th until July 10th, so THANK YOU for your prayers: you and your Mom. Thank her for me, will you?

The bad news is that I don't know if I can blog that much anymore, since I'll have classes from Mondays to Fridays and I THINK it's gonna be from 8.15 am till 3.45 pm. I have to reschedule my exercise and cooking time he he he he...

Another good news is that I'll be getting some money from the government since then I'm listed as a full-time student. Dunno yet how much I can get, but if I can save enough money to buy a plane ticket, then I MAY be able to go back to Indo at the end of this year. That possibility itself makes me SO happy.

If I can't save enough, well at least I'll have more savings before our baby program starts HE HE HE HE HE HE...;-D

So don't wonder about my whereabouts starting Feb 4th, OK?

  13. Hi Max! I despise what our world is becoming. What will our children experience in their lives? It terrifies me! A lot of my school training is centered around terrorism, attacks and mass causality incidents, it is so depressing to think that when we go to a scene to help someone that we are trained to think " is this a trick, a terrorist plot, a set up?"
I hope that you are safe!

  14. Hey Alexys,

"It's awful that we have to live in a heightened state of terrorism. We can't even walk down the street anymore without looking at people with suspicion or wondering what's going to happen next?" - I agree with you; it is awful! I can't say that I walk down the street looking over my shoulder (I won't allow myself to empower them); but the thought that anything can happen at anytime *nodding*...and what about the stress when travelling nowadays? One can't even take toothpaste into the plane (we have to submit ourselves to that ghastly air-toothmass to scrub our teeth lol); perfume, facial cream...if at the end of a trip one looked like it is was having a hang-over, imagine now...LOL...

"Simply brilliant. " - thank you, my friend *bowing*!

"I think that terrorists should be forced to listen to a Britney Spears CD. They will confess everything - even things they didn't do. I can hear them now. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! In Hell, no one can hear you scream. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" - LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL indeed, Britney Spears' music is utter torture. I don't even know how people can stand listen to that pseudo-music *nodding*...Woody Allen in one of his movies suggested that terrorists should be put to watch Disney movies (prisoners would start screaming and confessing things just to stop watching it lol).

Great comment, Alexys...you made me laugh lol :D! Thank you :D!

  16. Hello Anna,

"it is almost like they starting to pick on the small countries now. I remember those crazy thoughts when they said that there may be an attack on Canada." - Well, Portugal has a peculiar law so if the Portuguese authorities get a tip on terrorists and they get caught they will be immediately arrested, considered guilty (since here you are guilty until proven innocent) and then wait for trial for God knows how long *nodding*. Attack on Canada? That would be awful *nodding*...God forbid!

"yes in deed it is unfortunate thing, however, I still think that there is a small good seed within all of us, and if it is watered it will grow. Max, I have to tell you, I always hope for the best in people." - You are a treasure, Anna. To hope for the best in people is exactly what people should do; but it is not an easy task (unfortunately). If the world had more humans like you we would have Eden back on earth :D.

"Max thanks again, you are the best already. Anna :)" - no, I thank you for these lovely conversations *bowing*! Me, the best? You are sooo kind at me :)! I will not blush this time LOL...

If they would fight the military only...it would be a whole different matter; but the thing is: they kill people who many times don't even have an opinion about Middle-East nor Islam; know what I mean? It may seem sadistic; but what would you call what they do to innocent people? The problem with terrorism is that it is very hard to tell the innocent from te guilty since they are often tacitly supportive towards each other (even if they don't participate directly in the attacks).

"Anyway, I have GREAT news: the full-time Finnish course is starting soon!!! From Feb 4th until July 10th, so THANK YOU for your prayers: you and your Mom. Thank her for me, will you?" - WOW!!!! 20. Hello Genevieve!

"What will our children experience in their lives? It terrifies me!" - I understand how you feel; I don't have children yet however I often ask myself what will their lives be like *nodding*. It scares the hell out of any mom, doesn't it?

"A lot of my school training is centered around terrorism, attacks and mass causality incidents, it is so depressing to think that when we go to a scene to help someone that we are trained to think " is this a trick, a terrorist plot, a set up?"" - I hear you...*nodding*. It seems like we have to be suspicious of everybody. But we shouldn't be afraid nor intimidated (cause that is what they want us to feel like); let's not empower them...

"I hope that you are safe!" - I think that we are. The thing is: Portugal wasn't used to this type of thing. We are known for being a quiet and peaceful country and we never thought that terrorism would actually knock on our door; so panic is lurking a bit...

"On another note, I love this painting; it seems to be Edvard Munch's most famous however he does have others I find appealing. I love his use of color! “See” you soon!" - I love this painting too; and it is so appropriate for this theme, for the way things are going sometimes we just feel like screaming...

I see you soon, Genevieve; and thanks for your marvellous words :D!

  23. Regardless of one's political beliefs, it is fairly obvious that the Bush administration used the 9/11 attacks to scare the American people into believing that America needed to attack Iraq in order to protect itself from terrorism, when in actuality, all this has done is to create more hatred toward America than already existed, and create many more generations of future terrorists.

The time for change in our country has come.

  25. Hi Scott,

In my opinion Iraq needed help; and since nobody was willing to find valid arguments to do it; President Bush's administration did what it believed to be the best to get the support of its allies to go there and fight against that regime.
People who hate America are a bunch of hypocrites for everybody dreams of the American life, and everybody across the world copies America and turns to it for help, every chance they get.

We have been having terrorists for ages: ETA, IRA, FARC, Brigate Rosse, FP25 (Portugal), the Patriots, Hamas, Hezbollah etc...terrorism is not a new phenomenon and it doesn't equal Islam only.
We have been fighting terrorism for ages and we must continue to do so; and we must agree that the USA represent a crucial element on the combat against these coward acts.

Thanks for your comment, my friend; it is much appreciated :D!
