Good Taste & Sensibility

Portrait of a Woman by Bartolomeo Veneto
The concept of good taste has been, over the years, suffering gradual erosion. The notion of sensibility has been victim of attempted assault. If by any chance, my dear reader, you fail to understand where this conversation is going; pray, do follow me to the brink of the abyss…

Feminists never cease to surprise me – they have come up with a project called “The Slutwalk”. Apparently, feminists have exhausted all the worthy causes to fight for (for instance, they pretend that: the problem of female genital excision has been eradicated; women are no longer victims of domestic violence and sexual submission; all women in the world have the right to vote and drive; all women finally achieved equal pay for equal job etc); and now it is imperative to reclaim the word “slut”. As we know, slut means an immoral, sexual promiscuous, slovenly woman; a prostitute and a dirty untidy female. So why would feminists want to claim back such epithets?

The so-called “slutwalk” was born, if you will, after a Canadian police constable stated that women should “avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised”.  Clearly, this is a stupid chauvinistic statement; cause Talibans execute Burka-wearing women for showing their wrists or bear-hands (which, according to them, constitutes a clear sexual incitement), and Iman Al-Obeidi wasn’t exactly wearing skimpy clothes when she was raped by Libyan troops. This being said, it is not a question of what a woman wears but a question of whether a man is a criminal animal or not.

Going back to our adorable feminine fighters: they get offended by the witless words of a police officer and yet they want to claim the right to be tarts, harlots, whores, hookers, wenches, Cyprians and trollops. I am not sure their approach makes much sense. I totally support rebutting thoughtless, disrespectful, statements made by people; but Feminists really need to re-think their strategies and the way they have been dealing with certain issues lest offering the impression that they are a bunch of immature, shallow and idle little women seeking for attention.

Whenever gays parade, every year, practically nude in the streets they do not appear to be proud of what they are at all; they seem to ignore the sense of dignity and they fail to conquer respect (as individuals).

I loathe homophobia, but hurting heterosexual susceptibilities is not the right way to combat it.
All humans must never forget that with Rights come Duties: if gays want to be free, they must respect other people’s freedom; if they want heterosexuals to view them for whom they are and disregard their sexuality, then they shouldn’t flash it on their faces.

Gays have the right to practice their nature, they have the right to social benefits and civil rights, they have the right to be served and protected, but they do not have the right to aggress society with what should be kept in the privacy of their home.

Humans often have to fight for behavioural evolution however anarchy must never prevail and, even in the battlefield there’s always room for a fair dose of good taste and sensibility.

Comments

  1. I totally agree that the Canadian police officer's statement was out of line. Many criminals attack women who are dressed properly. But I do agree with him that women need to be careful how they dress, although not necessarily for the reason he gave. What frightens me is to see how parents are allowing their children to dress! THese children's dress definitely puts them at risk. I notice middle school children who dress like prostitutes. They are young and don't understand what they are doing. But surely their parents see them walk out the door!!

I have always abhorred the gay pride parade. Why does the city of San Francisco allow men to do things in the parade, for which they would be arrested any other day? Why do they allow R rated, or x rated costumes in public?! If it were about "pride", you would think they would dress respectfully and act respectfully. Showing ludeness and nudity, and acting out sexual behaviors in public does nothing to make me respect gays. I suspect they have a different motive than just "pride".

  2. Hi D! :D

"I totally agree that the Canadian police officer's statement was out of line. Many criminals attack women who are dressed properly."

And he knew his words were out of line but he decided to just say them anyway - I suspect he wanted to send out a strong message to females.
Absolutely, criminals do attack modestly dressed women as well proving that it is not about what women wear at all.

"What frightens me is to see how parents are allowing their children to dress! THese children's dress definitely puts them at risk. I notice middle school children who dress like prostitutes. They are young and don't understand what they are doing. But surely their parents see them walk out the door!!"

You are 100% correct. Children, today, dress like mini-wenches and their mums allow them to (that is not good parenting).
There is one TV show that simply shocks me: toddlers and tiaras (or something like that). What is that?

"If it were about "pride", you would think they would dress respectfully and act respectfully. Showing ludeness and nudity, and acting out sexual behaviors in public does nothing to make me respect gays. I suspect they have a different motive than just "pride"."

It is not about pride, most definitely, otherwise they wouldn't do it. I don't like it when humans (straight or gay) display sexual behaviour in the streets - keep your sex life private.
If gays wish to parade with their clothes on and signs encouraging people to respect them, excellent. But to walk around naked and simulate sexual acts...come on!

D, thank you ever so much for sharing your thoughts on this issue :D.

    Cheers

  3. Hi Max,

I noticed the title of this post and immediately thought of you. Good taste and sensibility describe you to a T. (I have seen your clothes and shoes.)

“The Slutwalk…" really despicable. Once again women are keeping women down. Just like when women chose to pose nude in mens magazines and then blame men. The word feminist is not what is used to be. It is a political organization controlled by certain puppet masters to selectively protect some women and blame other women. Feminism itself doesn't really promote equal rights.

"Humans often have to fight for behavioural evolution however anarchy must never prevail and, even in the battlefield there’s always room for a fair dose of good taste and sensibility."

    Hear hear!

Max, excellent piece. As long as women have you fighting for our rights, we are in good hands.

    Empowerment Cheers!

LOL LOL Aha...it was you inside my closet last week...I knew it (but since I was in a hurry I didn't have the time to check). ;)

"Once again women are keeping women down. Just like when women chose to pose nude in mens magazines and then blame men. The word feminist is not what is used to be."

    Right? Ridiculous...*nodding*.

"It is a political organization controlled by certain puppet masters to selectively protect some women and blame other women. Feminism itself doesn't really promote equal rights."

    You have nailed it ^5!

    "Hear hear!"

  5. Max,

The slutwalk is the stupidest initiative I have seen feminists engaging in (another stupid one is pro-Abortion campaigns).
Women still have so many problems to solve and being called sluts its the least of them. You, in one of your past posts, said that the fight isn't over and as long as one woman on earth is still fighting for basic rights then we must fight for and with them - you are right.

As for gay pride parades: they embody the negative gay stereotypes that we are trying to fight against (ex: promiscuity, lewdness, obscenity etc).
I would swear that gays who participate in these events (because not all of them do) want to provoke people. And I say this, because this pride movement wanted to parade in Jerusalem (a few years ago)...Jerusalem, Max! Then, when they were not allowed they moved to Tel Aviv (where gays from all over the world parade half-naked). I can only view it as sheer provocation.
And it is a shame because they do not help the sensible gays who just want to live their lives in peace.

"Humans often have to fight for behavioural evolution however anarchy must never prevail and, even in the battlefield there’s always room for a fair dose of good taste and sensibility."

    Well said.

  6. Ah, it's a thin line between fighting for your rights and being blinded by them...

I admire women who stood up to legalize abortion in France many years ago. These women, most of them famous, wrote a "manifesto of the sluts" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifesto_of_the_343) because they had a point and were going somewhere with it. I'm not sure I would take part in a "slut walk", I still don't get it.

  7. The way you have written this post really suggests you have that good taste and sensibility, if not good, I'd say, best!

You have written a harsh reality which we can't do anything I guess to protect our feminism...women are always subject to ridicule beyond compare...just one woman can destroy an entire empire of women?

I mean, why do these thrive? Anyways, that is beyond our control...

Best is, just we keep ourselves to display such good taste and sensibility!

A very sensible post this one Max! Loved your thoughts, as always! And thanks for sharing...:)

  8. Hi Ana :D!

"The slutwalk is the stupidest initiative I have seen feminists engaging in (another stupid one is pro-Abortion campaigns)."

lol...Ana, Ana...you are so direct: I love it!
I am against Abortion myself - it goes against everything I stand for. But if women want to do it, then it is between them and the Creator.

"Women still have so many problems to solve and being called sluts its the least of them. You, in one of your past posts, said that the fight isn't over and as long as one woman on earth is still fighting for basic rights then we must fight for and with them - you are right."

LOL indeed *nodding*. Thank you for retaining my words; I feel honoured *bowing*.

"As for gay pride parades: they embody the negative gay stereotypes that we are trying to fight against (ex: promiscuity, lewdness, obscenity etc)."

I hadn't thought of it; yes...you are right. We fight for gay rights to be respected and when this kind of parades do not help at all (specially near the most conservative fringes of society).

"I would swear that gays who participate in these events (because not all of them do) want to provoke people. And I say this, because this pride movement wanted to parade in Jerusalem (a few years ago)...Jerusalem, Max! Then, when they were not allowed they moved to Tel Aviv (where gays from all over the world parade half-naked). I can only view it as sheer provocation."

Yes, I read about it *nodding*. Everybody knows that Jerusalem is a Holy city (to various religions) therefore trying to host this kind of event there is pure provocation, if not disrespect. There must be boundaries...

    "Well said."

    Thank you *bowing*...

Ana, it is always a pleasure to see you here among us; thank you so much for your superb comment :D.

  9. Hi Zhu :D!

"Ah, it's a thin line between fighting for your rights and being blinded by them..."

    Well said.

"I admire women who stood up to legalize abortion in France many years ago. These women, most of them famous, wrote a "manifesto of the sluts" because they had a point and were going somewhere with it."

Well, it is well known that I am against abortion (specially when it is used as a means of birth control); but it is more of a metaphysical, moral and ethical issue rather than a Law problem. This being said, I do not agree with emprisoning women for having had an abortion; however I will not pretend that all arguments used to support it are valid. For example, Simone de Beauvoir said:

«Condemned to secrecy, they have them in dangerous conditions when this procedure, performed under medical supervision, is one of the simplest.»

Although I understand what she meant by this (and she is right when she says it is dangerous when practiced by people without a proper medical degree); one must admit that the final parcel of the sentence renders the whole argument shallow "is one of the simplest" because there is nothing simple about an abortion. The physical and psychological consequences of such procedures are daunting.

«Just as we demand free access to birth control, we demand the freedom to have an abortion»

Indeed, people should have the right to use condoms and take poison if they will (because trust me, birth-control pills are nothing but poison that, like most chemicals, ruin the body); and freedom to do whatever they want with their own body if they are really sure that their body belongs to them...but like I said, abortion is more of a metaphysical, moral and ethical problem.

"I'm not sure I would take part in a "slut walk", I still don't get it."

I doesn't make sense to me either *nodding*...

Zhu Zhu, a superb comment (thanks for sharing the link) for which I thank you immensely :D.

"The way you have written this post really suggests you have that good taste and sensibility, if not good, I'd say, best!"

Why, thank you, darling *bowing*. God Bless you!

"You have written a harsh reality which we can't do anything I guess to protect our feminism...women are always subject to ridicule beyond compare...just one woman can destroy an entire empire of women?"

Indeed, unfortunately one woman can be all it takes to do a lot of damage in the feminine empire...

"I mean, why do these thrive? Anyways, that is beyond our control..."

Because they are the loudest (in every single way).

"Best is, just we keep ourselves to display such good taste and sensibility!"

    Teach by example, right?

"A very sensible post this one Max! Loved your thoughts, as always! And thanks for sharing...:)"

Amity, thanks a millions for your well reflected comment :D.

  11. There really is no substitute for good taste and sensibility, but these two characteristics are the two most difficult to find. The problem gets confounded when you have a clash of differing cultures and traditions too. It is too complicated and vast a subject to conclude one way or the other.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Max:

I totally agree with you and with the other respondents. Their comments are right on with my personal beliefs.

In America, we have a special problem with this kind of nonsense. It's called hypocrisy. For instance, teenage boys walk the public streets with their pants pulled down below their butts with impunity, while police officers roam the beaches looking for women wearing skimpy swimsuits. Is something wrong with this picture?

I am all for civility, mutual respect and freedom. Men and women should be treated the same, with the same opportunities, the same liberties and the the same freedom to do as they please. Of course, all of this must take place within the confines of a civilized society. And that's where I have a problem. Who determines the boundaries of a civilized society? In all my long years on this planet I haven't met one single person, or government body, whom I trust to set those limits.

    That's my two cents.

    happy trails.

  13. I'm gay, but I still don't understand the point of going nude or simulating sex on pride parades. It just further the stereotype that gay people (particularly the men) are a bunch of horny, promiscuous individuals. It's not really garnering respect.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh yes Max, "Toddlers and Tiaras" is crazy. These women, in my opinion, are living through their children. These beauty pageants are for the mothers to live out their own desires to be a beauty queen. Some of the beauty pageants even have a "mother" competition in addition to the children's one. What I don't like about these pageants is that the child is being judged on their poise and beauty, but much of the beauty that is being judged comes from makeup, hair extensions, spray on tan, and false eyelashes. These poor children are growing up to believe that beauty is something you put on, not something you are.

"There really is no substitute for good taste and sensibility, but these two characteristics are the two most difficult to find."

    Agreed.

"The problem gets confounded when you have a clash of differing cultures and traditions too. It is too complicated and vast a subject to conclude one way or the other."

I see what you mean; however good taste and sensibility surpasses cultures and traditions, in my opinion. There are some things that are simply universal - just like democracy.

Rummy, it is always a pleasure to hear your take on issues; thank you so much for your input :D.

I think that problem is universal (at least in the western world) *nodding*.

"I am all for civility, mutual respect and freedom. Men and women should be treated the same, with the same opportunities, the same liberties and the the same freedom to do as they please."

Any civilisation is civilised (in its own way). But societal rules and values have been created for some reason (to establish order, for example); and one of those values is modesty - which prevents a lot of troubles (at least in theory, right? lol)...

    "That's my two cents."

Awesome two cents, as always, my friend!

LOL really? They felt sorry for the mothers, eh? It's either that or it's for the mums to be distracted for a bit and take off the pressure from the children....

  19. I think that THERE ARE more serious issues that feminists may be concerned about. But the problem is that those issues do not draw media attention.
I believe that aren´t the clothes that make a criminal.
    Simply so...
Pride Parade, takes place every year in Stockholm, the Capital of Sweden. That should not be proud of anything or anyone. What I see are naked men, drunk and women in grotesque costumes. They kiss, cling, rub. And I do not see pride in acts that violate a society.
I was invited to be the official photographer of the Pride Parade this year in Stockholm. I declined. I don´t accept that cause, definitely, I would have to make photos that are not going to beautify the life. And photos shouldn´te used to shock the world in the sense of imposing a ATTITUDE.
I don´t see any fun, two men, overly made-up, kissing in the city center, with children around, looking puzzled.
That is what is called PRIDE?
While they do that, the serious homo are dieding with no help. The violence against them is very high in all over the world. I don´t believe that a PRIDE PARADE can help the society to understand that world.
last week, one friend of mine contacted me and asked me: GRACE, WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT MY GIRLFRIEND AND ME HAVE A BABY?
I just answered her: HOW can you do that?If you want a baby, why don´t you adopt one?
She is feminist and laughing told me that she was in Brazil being inseminated...
    I don´t know the future...but something isn´t very drawed...

  20. Hi Grace :D!

"I think that THERE ARE more serious issues that feminists may be concerned about. But the problem is that those issues do not draw media attention."

    Totally agreed!

"Pride Parade, (...) That should not be proud of anything or anyone. What I see are naked men, drunk and women in grotesque costumes. They kiss, cling, rub. And I do not see pride in acts that violate a society."

    Again, I agree.

"I was invited to be the official photographer of the Pride Parade this year in Stockholm. I declined. I don´t accept that cause, definitely, I would have to make photos that are not going to beautify the life. And photos shouldn´te used to shock the world in the sense of imposing a ATTITUDE."

I like your sense of ethics, Grace. Very well said "photos shouldn't be used to shock the world in the sense of imposing an ATTITUDE" *applauding*!

"While they do that, the serious homo are dieding with no help. The violence against them is very high in all over the world. I don´t believe that a PRIDE PARADE can help the society to understand that world."

True. Pride Parades are some sort of provocation; and given the violence (that unfortunately) gays are subject to, it doesn't help the cause at all.

"last week, one friend of mine contacted me and asked me: GRACE, WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT MY GIRLFRIEND AND ME HAVE A BABY? I just answered her: HOW can you do that?If you want a baby, why don´t you adopt one?"

Yes, why not adopt? There are so many children in need of a family out there...
But again, Lesbians have eggs, they have a womb...so they can reproduce, if they wish.

"She is feminist and laughing told me that she was in Brazil being inseminated..."

lol I see. Well, I saw a documentary in France (a few years ago) showing that children fruit of insemination had a hard time understanding where they had come from and as such it raised a lot of questions about the ethics of such interventions (in cases like gays, single women, etc)...

    "I don´t know the future...but something isn´t very drawed..."

The cloud of uncertainty is hovering over our heads...no doubt.

Grace, excellent comment for which I thank you :D.

    Cheers
