London: Greenwich Hospital from the North Bank of the Thames by Canaletto |
Last week a US Presidential Candidate received a lesson
of Foreign Affairs from no other than Dmitry Medvedev, the incumbent Russian
President.
Presidents Obama and Medvedev were “caught” by an open
microphone having an interesting dialogue: President Obama would have more
flexibility after his election, and President Medvedev understood and would
convey the message to Mr Putin.
Political analysts and rightist politicians (mainly in
the US) immediately reacted (as opposed to thinking and analysing first). Mitt
Romney, in his reaction, went as far as saying “The
president mentioned missile defense to Medvedev as one area where the Kremlin
should expect more flexibility. This is alarming.” and “If he (...)
suggests to Russia that he has things he's willing to do with them, he's not
willing to tell the American people - this is to Russia, this is, without
question, our number one geopolitical foe”
The Republican Party could’ve come up with better
candidates than the ones it is offering. All of them represent the Old America that
the world doesn’t respect and is unwilling to work with (which could prompt
countries to snub the US and, follow the example of other nations by inventing economic & political blocs among themselves). Whether one likes it or not, President Obama set the diplomatic bar
high: the world likes him and is more than willing to work with him (because he
represents the New America; the America of the 21st century that the
whole globe respects [including her opponents] and is willing to follow).
Mitt Romney made two gross mistakes:
1. He showed that he not only doesn’t read into the
diplomatic and security conjuncture but he also fails to make the proper
correlations. President Bush signed agreements to place missile interceptors in
Poland and the Czech Republic (to fill a gap in its anti-missile defence to
shield US interests in Europe from potential threats) when there were
indicators that Iran was developing long-range ballistic missiles; however,
when President Obama took office, the US Intelligence assessed that Iran was
focusing on short-range ballistic missiles instead (rendering thus the European
deployment unnecessary for the moment).
Russia had felt threatened by Pres. Bush’s plan (she assumed the US would use
the radars to spy on her); and Russia was more relaxed when Pres. Obama
reversed the whole matter. There is a complex context in which falls the
conversation between the two presidents in South Korea, but Mitt Romney by
wanting to politically capitalise from it embarrassed himself.
2. He proved that he represents ancient America, by
revealing that his mind is still in the cold war period (presently, Russia is
so not the US number one geopolitical foe). Moreover he put the whole world en
garde (i.e. brace yourselves; good relations with America are coming to an end).
Mitt Romney doesn’t comprehend that the world is changing and that the old American
rhetoric doesn’t intimidate anyone any longer and, if (God forbid) he gets elected
into office it won’t definitely help him reach his goal “This century must be
an American century”.
So what was the result of Mitt Romney’s silly
reaction? He (and the Republican Party, by proxy) was disparaged by Russia:
“I recommend that all US presidential candidates... do
at least two things: that they use their head and consult their reason when
they formulate their positions, and that they check the time - it is now 2012,
not the mid-1970s.” (Dmitry
Medvedev, March 2012)
Yes, Mr Romney definitely represents the Old America
that no one likes or respects.
May God help us all if he ever becomes the next US
Commander-in-chief.

I would vote for Romney over Obama, because Obama is a socialist, and socialism doesn't sit well with democracy.
ReplyDeleteDelirious,
DeleteYou are confusing socialism with communism. Britain was governed by a socialist (labour) that helped a Republican president to invade Iraq: Tony Blair. Norway is socialist, Sweeden used to be socialist, Germany was governed by a socialist party before Angela Merkel and Schroeder; France was governed by Miterrand and his socialist party and let me tell you that all those countries are democratic, rich and they were chosen by the people so socialism sits well with democracy.
Communism is the one that doesn't sit well with democracy!
Hi D! :D
Delete"I would vote for Romney over Obama, because Obama is a socialist, and socialism doesn't sit well with democracy."
I detest the concept of socialism, myself. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying that contemporary socialism doesn't go with democracy. Besides the US has never met socialism and probably never will, thus Europeans (who actually have lived under socialism [and communism, in many cases]) always find it funny when some Americans accuse President Obama of being a socialist.
You say you would vote for Romney; so, you would basically vote for a man who is clearly unqualified to be the President of the US, and whom as a candidate is already alienating countries with which the US needs to work with, just because you want to depose a President that is actually doing a good job (under the dire circumstances)? I see...
D, thank you ever so much for your most interesting input :D.
Cheers
Hi Teresa :D!
DeleteWelcome to our little arena :).
I know you are replying to Delirious, but I would like to say that, although I dislike socialism, you are 100% correct: socialism (if properly managed) can sit well with democracy. And the examples you offered are right on.
Thanks for enriching the discussion and I hope to see more of you here :D.
Cheers
Delirious, perhaps you'd vote for Romney since you share the same spiritual belief. The man is not president material and he flip flops a lot (yah, even more than Obama).
DeleteWe are living in very interesting times Max. Are you a betting person? I am willing to bet that Obama will win his second term.
ReplyDeleteHi Rummy :D!
Delete"We are living in very interesting times Max."
I utterly agree with you, my friend.
"Are you a betting person? I am willing to bet that Obama will win his second term."
I wish I were. You know what? I hope you win that bet, man; cause the alternative candidates are not good at all.
Rummy, thank you ever so much for your input :D.
Cheers
Max, Romney made a fool of himself which is not surprising. Because of him once again the world is laughing at America- what an embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous :D!
Delete"Romney made a fool of himself which is not surprising. Because of him once again the world is laughing at America- what an embarrassment!"
Well, the world is not laughing at America; it is laughing at Mitt Romney (and at the Republicans by proxy)...
Thank you so much for your comment and be nice :)...

It doesn't matter so much what the world thinks of us. What can anyone do about it?
ReplyDeleteHi Vid :D!
Delete"It doesn't matter so much what the world thinks of us. What can anyone do about it?"
Well, it does. America needs the world more than some Americans seem to think.
All I can tell you is that a lot of politics, defence and trade agreements are involved and America can't afford to alienate anyone in the world, specially now.
What can anyone do about it? Let's say that US interests abroad (including US citizens, and I believe you are going to study abroad soon) can be in danger if the US goes back to act senseless and arrogantly...just one example.
Vid, thanks for your input :D.
Cheers
If anyone tries to negatively affect the United States, the other countries would be the ones to suffer for it. For example, a few years back the united States made the process to get a Visa from France to enter the US more difficult to avoid terrorists entering the country. In retaliation, the French made it more difficult to get a Visa to France from the US. This caused such a loss of tourism money in France that they had to undo their action.

Not a good example, but yes...let's discuss it.
The US, from times to times, engages in this sort of feud with Europe (which sometimes is well founded, specially when it comes to Security issues and France [due to its large Muslim community] can be a gate for terror in US soil - although it is not alone): sometimes it wins but it also loses (when facing Britain the US usually loses). It is all part of the diplomatic dance.
Still, the US interests abroad can be affected if she acts arrogant and senselessly.
Hi Max,
ReplyDeleteThis title could have been the sequel to the Bond film of a similar title.
Today's president or prime minister has to be aware that the world is listening. Microphones are so sensitive too, they could pick up a heartbeat.
This is the one instance where I would recommend texting. No one would have known. LOL. It would have put a different complexion on "peace." (Get it?)
I have a neighbor who lived in communist Russia through the cold war. He says that the time most presidents stay in office goes by so fast and though some don't want the man in power, soon the next one is in. He said, "Both parties are happy for a while, both parties are sad for a while, period."
Though there are many more ramifications to politics, I thought he had an interesting way of looking at it.
Great Post!
Peace Cheers!
Hi Lady A :D!
Delete"This title could have been the sequel to the Bond film of a similar title."
lol you reckon?
"Today's president or prime minister has to be aware that the world is listening. Microphones are so sensitive too, they could pick up a heartbeat."
True. However, I am not sure that this was an accident; know what I mean?
"This is the one instance where I would recommend texting. No one would have known. LOL. It would have put a different complexion on "peace." (Get it?)"
LOL LOL LOL got it LOL.
"He says that the time most presidents stay in office goes by so fast and though some don't want the man in power, soon the next one is in. He said, "Both parties are happy for a while, both parties are sad for a while, period.".."
Your neighbour has got a point...
"Though there are many more ramifications to politics, I thought he had an interesting way of looking at it."
Politics is an entangled web; yet a very exciting entangled web.
"Great Post!"
Thank you, darling *bowing*.
Lady A, thank you ever so much for your superb input :D. Always a pleasure!
Peace Cheers
I couldn't say much about this post Max...but I would delve on your title, "From Russia with Laughter"!
ReplyDeleteIt could be exciting if it is "From Russia with LOve"...how about that? And you may be writing a news headline that President Obama is falling in love with the Russian President? Lols! Peace...just kidding...or I mean, they are both whispering to each other how beautiful the Russian ladies are!
Thanks Max for your kind visit...I am happy you came by even if I was on break for a long time!
From the Philippines with Love,
Amity

Medvedev has given the proper reaction to Romney.
ReplyDeleteThe left from a century ago was split into three camps, not two. Socialism and Communism we name, but the third involved government co-opting of all private institutions through regulation, oversight and financial redirection. Since I am not allowed to use the F-word, I won't name it, but it seems that the US has more regulations than the rest of the world combined.
Hi Looney :D!
Delete"Medvedev has given the proper reaction to Romney."
*nodding in agreement*
"The left from a century ago was split into three camps, not two. Socialism and Communism we name, but the third involved government co-opting of all private institutions through regulation, oversight and financial redirection."
lol are you suggesting that third leftist camp is something like "Obama Camp"?
Right Wing governments (in Europe at least) are now in favour of regulations, oversight and financial redirection...so, are these a necessary evil?
"Since I am not allowed to use the F-word, I won't name it, but it seems that the US has more regulations than the rest of the world combined."
LOL LOL *nodding*...I don't think I can corroborate your position.
Looney, awesome comment for which I thank you a million times :D. A true pleasure, now doubt.
Cheers
Olá Max,
ReplyDeleteMitt Romney spent a lot of time saying that president Obama was inept in foreign policy and he has just proved that the inept one is exactly himself. I don't know what is the matter with republicans: first they present these terrible candidates (one is worse than the next one. Remember Michele Bachmann?), then they make unintelligent comments, then they transmit the image that they still live in the past (ok, Newt Gingrich not as much but still...). As a conservative, I feel embarrassed by the US right wing party.
Aren't American rightists sick of being slapped by Russia? The last time was Putin vs president Bush...
In a time when we want to eradicate the left wing and irradicate conservative values, we have the "Romneys" of the world to mess things up for us.
Good job with this post, Max!
Tchau
Olá Celeste :D!

True.

I see what you mean. It could be said that the Right Wing is also going through a severe crisis...
"In a time when we want to eradicate the left wing and irradicate conservative values, we have the "Romneys" of the world to mess things up for us."
I hear you.
"Good job with this post, Max!"
Thanks, darling *bowing*.
Celeste, thank you so much for your fabulous input :D. Always a delight.

I guess these are rhetoric's to cater to a select electorate to garner votes in election times because I don't think even Republicans are aloof from the new world order and US also realises that, it doesn't command that upper hand, it once did. To me in the political sphere, the European countries has come a long way, when it comes to aggressive trade with countries, with more transparent business policies than the US.
ReplyDeleteTo come to the post, I have followed so many elections in other countries where just to rev up some dry emotions, leaders will pep talk about their traditional neighbouring foes, but ultimately people today are far more mature and they generally vote today more on an economic and development agenda than on rhetoric's of the past. And as far I have followed the general US mood today, the present incumbents halo may be a little shallow at this moment, but one thing more concerning the people at large at this moment is their overall Economy.
Hi Kalyan :D!
Delete"I guess these are rhetoric's to cater to a select electorate to garner votes in election times because I don't think even Republicans are aloof from the new world order and US also realises that, it doesn't command that upper hand, it once did."
You may be right; however this sort of political strategy underestimates the electorate (that is far much more informed than it was many years ago).
"To me in the political sphere, the European countries has come a long way, when it comes to aggressive trade with countries, with more transparent business policies than the US."
You think so?
"(...) but ultimately people today are far more mature and they generally vote today more on an economic and development agenda than on rhetoric's of the past."
Exactly!

Kalyan, outstanding comment for which I thank you a million times. It's an honour to read your thoughts :D.
