Training for Jedi Knights Lesson 1 - Part I

By Stephen Cheney

LESSON 1: THE FORCE

Those who are fans of Star Wars and Jedi Knights know that there is a mysterious magic called ‘The Force’. Jedi Knights use The Force to confound and defeat evil creatures. The Force is all around you, and IF YOU KNOW HOW, you can call upon it, connect to it and use it. There are a number of Forces to be so used and we will be covering them.

Evil ones do not understand or use the marvellous mysterious forces in nature because they are lazy and don’t like to study; and bullies and other evil ones rely on what works for them to dominate others: the use of their greater strength and vicious personality.

Their greater strength comes from them being bigger than you with bigger muscles. How do their muscles work? They pull on the levers of the body, the bones. They lever ultimately by bracing the body’s bone structure against the Earth. But if the body has no or little contact with the planet Earth: bodies just fall down. With their bigness, their greater weight they fall heavily and can be damaged. Why to fall or plummet downward instead of in some other direction? There is a universal Force, everywhere and on every planet, it is called ‘GRAVITY’.

Gravity pulls on all things that have mass or energy. So whenever you drop something it goes downward to the Earth. Actually Gravity does not do this by pulling. Gravity instead warps space (take note Star Trekking fans) so that it forms a slide, a curve, down which loose items slide faster and faster to the ground - the ground mass pushes back to stop any further falling into the centre of the Earth - and so there is a collision. So, meteors in space coming our way get caught in the space warp of the Earth and slide down towards the Earth’s centre, faster and faster until impact, or if at an angle they may swing off away - an acceleration. We use this acceleration effect to increase speed and save fuel in our spaceships to they can more easily get to, say, Mars; though by a longer route.

Where is the centre of the Earth? Simply drop a ball and the path it goes down points directly to the Centre of our planet. Through the path of the ball you can ‘see’ The FORCE.

To call on and manipulate the force of Gravity requires the enhancement of your balance and the off-balancing of your opponent. Many Martial Arts techniques make use of The Force of Gravity. It is a force that is always available.

SINGLE FINGER THROW NUMBER 1:

The magic wand that you need is your finger and a closeness to the Opponent.

{ 1 } Form your hand into a fist and move forward your first fingers knuckle tip, affix it there by pressing on that bent finger from the side with your thumb. So your fist ends up in the fist-shape but with one finger’s knuckle protruding like a triangle or miniature pyramid. It is the tip of this knuckle that we will use.

{ 2 } Step close to your opponent avoiding his arms. Over your forward leg with your forward arm you suddenly strike your knuckle into his Sternum. The Sternum is a plate of bone on the middle of the chest all the ribs join it. On top of the Sternum a nerve runs downward. So you hit there but do not take your finger off, instead keep pressing and also you grind or screw your knuckle into his chest. Lean forward with your weight. Great pain results and that takes your opponent’s the mind off the attack he was thinking about.  Your pressure pushes him off-balance to his rear.

You thus attack the mind (by way of the nervous system) and then you attack the body.

{ 3 } So, you must then take immediate advantage of this moment, as you lean/bend forward you can reach down either behind the Opponent’s hip or behind his thigh with your free hand and pull him towards you. This stops him from recovering his balance by stepping back.

Therefore, by using both hands you move then in a circle to push him back high on his chest and pull his lower half forward. Thus, you wheel him over and down as the Force of Gravity will take him. In a Self Defence situation you then quickly leave. You have delivered him into The Force and it has sucked him down.

He may try to counter his fall by grabbing onto you, however because pulling you greatly increases the pressure and pain from your knuckle: he will let go.

{ 4 } As he falls you must look around you for any other dangerous persons. Do not mock the person who is down as you have won and mocking him will wound his pride enough to get up and attack you again. Leave a bad scene.

  1. Never mock a man when he's down. This applies for all situations in life, not just combat.
    Excellent class.

  3. It will take me some time before I learn the single finger throw. It says number 1, is there another technique of finger throwing an attacker?

    1. Hi Celeste, You simply push back his chest by thrusting against the nerve on his chest; and you pull towards you his leg or hip with your other hand. His top half tilts back and his bottom half tilts forward until he falls. The nerve on the chest bone is similar to that on the shin bone, both are painful when hit.
Yes there are other single finger throws and we will cover some of them.

    2. Think of Harry Potter thrusting forward his wand into the upper body of a monster.
One of your arms thrusts forward and the other (pulling his leg or hip) pulls back to you.
This action is also seen in Karate: where you strike by thrusting one arm forward and you retract the other arm to your hip. Karate forms also have JuJutsu applications hidden in them. Retracting to the hip is not done in boxing and a boxer would not see the sense in it. In Karate it helps to deliver great power by maximising hip/shoulder turn (so long as the strike hits); however in battle it is the grabbing and pull them that has meaning (application). Also the Chinese, often being not of great body bulk, enjoy grabbing an opponent and pulling him into the blow, so greatly increasing the power of the strike (also off-balancing the opponent, so impeding a counter). Also in street fighting, a mugger will grab you so you cannot get away, grabbing then hitting you with a punch. Similarly you can be grabbed with one hand and a knife thrust into you with the other. Thus the purpose of learning in Self Defence/JuJutsu breaks to grabs which often does not make sense to Karate students, as why would anyone grab you instead of just hitting you? One action complements the other. A knifer stabs at someone and they just move back safely and run away: so a knifer, if close, finds value in grabbing you first. Karate grabs are hidden in their Kata.

  4. Mr Stephen, thank you for this lesson. I will try to train this technique with my boyfriend, he also likes combat and things like this.
I see you are explaining Celeste about a mugging situation but if he will grab us then how do we defend ourselves? We do nothing and let him rob us? I don't have time to go and learn Jujutsu, so how do I do?

  5. Hi Leila
I can only teach some arts on the internet, more requires years of teaching and training. Text is not the same as hands-on training. We will cover a grab, but there are many kinds.

If sometime in your life a mugger finds you, and they actively hunt for victims, and you have learned neither a defensive art, nor the ‘art’ of the gun, then you will be mugged, and if unlucky also killed (who wants witnesses?).

If you stand in front of an oncoming truck then you must expect to be flattened. So learn to move. You must find the time to learn a defensive art, or suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, as Shakespeare notes. So for you, at this stage of choices where you choose to select non-training: when mugged, hand over your wallet/money purse.

I would thus advise you to carry two wallets, the extra one that you hand over with some money in it and some invalid cards (no personal addresses or phone numbers) to bulk it up and make it look authentic. The strategy: give them what they expect. Make the mugger happy and maybe, maybe, he will leave.

Better to learn defences as well. All defence to attackers is in layers: You comply; you talk your way out of trouble if possible and if attacker gives you the time to do so; you physically defend yourself when necessary. Otherwise you need to keep your legal Will up to date, and live as if every day is your last, as one day that will be true.

    1. That is a great advice, Stephen! I always thought chicks needed to learn how to defend themselves.

  6. Stephen, thank you for the lesson. I only know the basics of self-defence, how to kick push and run. My mom taught me. But I will try these techniques, who knows? Thankks.

  7. Being a more visual person I would have to be in front of the instructor to see first and then do it! Reading these instructions is very hard for me to replicate! Sorry...but I like reading your posts at the same, thank you!

    1. Hi Carla, to get a simple idea of the mechanics of the technique do the following:

1.Stand in front of your partner, facing each other.
2.Reach out and place your palm on the centre of their upper chest, be close enough so that your arm is bent.
3.Bend forward and reach down to with your other hand and collect their thigh to scoop it upwards.
      4. Pull their leg (thigh) upwards so that they are on one leg as you push forward with your arm on their chest so your arm straightens.
      5. This is a push and pull action working together to wheel your partner backward so they fall to the ground (where you have placed a mattress to cushion the fall).
      6. If you want even more leverage then:
Your higher hand pushes up and back on their chin as your lower hand scoops up their knee and you wheel him over.

      7. IN APPLICATION, instead of where your opponent does nothing and cooperates:
      They punch at your head:
Using your arm that is on the same side as theirs, you block their arm from the inside, you arm ending up on the inside of theirs:
You step forward and that same arm of yours goes immediately forward to their chest with your knuckle, OR its palm to their chin to thrust their head back:
As you bend to scoop their leg:
      Push and Pull.
Your off-balancing them prevents them from effectively hitting you with their other arm as they go down.
