Twist Top Waza

EXERCISES to assist Learning and Doing the Waza

  • Standard Karate chudan punching: standing stationary, ready to march down the room, One arm strikes straight out (strikes are a PUSHING Force) as, at the same time, the other arm PULLS in to the hip. Then you STEP forward and repeat. Boxers do not see the sense in this fist to the hip action, and for their rules they are correct; however they do not grapple. In Karate Kata etc are hidden its roots in ancient China and its JuJutsu waza (Chin Na in Chinese). The forward hand grabs the enemy and pulls him to the hip and the other arm strikes. This Pull Push movement doubles the speed and thus increases the force of impact. The fist to the hip has other benefits in striking with power (but you must not miss). The Chinese are often of light build and against a bigger opponent this pulling a body into the path of their outward blow is very sensible. In Muay Thai they pull the head and body down into an upcoming knee blow. Two cars hitting head-on collide at their total speed not just the speed of one.
  • Wrap your arms around your upper chest and hug yourself. Also a good stretch for your upper back muscles.

QUOTES relating for discussion

A twist in time saves nine. -- SC

Put your shoulder to the wheel. -- Aesop

The wheel is come full circle. -- William Shakespeare

The moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. -- J. K. Rowling

And finally I twist my heart round again... --  Anne Frank

SITUATIONS

A bully or aggressor gets close to you to dominate by force of their intense personality and dominant will. Their arms are down and not in guard for they see no need to defend, they are not thinking that they have to defend. They are confident that they can conquer you as they loom over you. That confidence is however, misplaced.

If you just PUSH back a heavy Aggressor they can easily resist with their weight and by bracing their feet. If you instead grab and straight PULL towards you a heavy Aggressor they can easily resist with their weight and by bracing their feet. Same if you try to PUSH him to one side or the other. A linear force can be easily countered by linear force. Circular forces are, however, a different matter.

ATTACK

A bully or aggressor gets close to your front to dominate you by their overwhelming size and strength. Attacking your mind. May be a lead up to a Bashing. His arms are down, his dominance and confidence are high.
