It is a general thought that artists are special creatures who speak a special language; that can only be deciphered by the most sensitive. Artists are viewed as geniuses; and, as such, tolerance must be practiced when witnessing their “occasional” erratic behaviour.
Below you’ll find some of the myths conferred to this class:
- Artists speak in a divine code: well, if Rap artists’ language reflects the Divine may God help us all. If some painters’ art express the code of God (or even the gods) then Heaven (or the Olympus) must be full of perverts and troubled people.
- Artists are all for peace and love: Picasso exerted psychological violence upon the women in his life; Edgar Degas became an anti-Semite; it is said that Clint Eastwood displays violent behaviour from times to times; Russel Crowe likes to punch the paparazzi; António Lobo Antunes (a Portuguese writer) insults people...
- Artists are sane individuals: Modigliani drank his art & life away; Antero de Quental (a Portuguese Poet & Philosopher) was constantly depressed and (after being disappointed at socialism) killed himself; Van Gogh cut his own ear; Marquis de Sade suffered from sexual perversion...
- Artists always have good taste: Versace’s house was horrible; Yves Saint Laurent’s flats were so packed with antiques and art objects that it bordered bad taste and vulgarity. Then we have those artists living in the midst of empty bottles, trash, and disorganisation who are deified; and their lack of taste, of organisation and order is extolled as eccentricity.
- Artists are always balanced: many are the personification of disequilibrium - Marilyn Monroe (poor soul); Ernest Hemingway; Jim Morrison; Sylvia Plath; Kurt Cobain; Sá Carneiro (a Portuguese writer who was unbalanced and killed himself); Amy Winehouse (blessed be her heart)...
- Artists are above politics: yeah...right. Picasso was considered the icon of communism and Wagner was an icon of the Nazi Party. Plus, nowadays it is trendy for artists to be political activists (in some cases they do an excellent job [Mia Farrow & George Clooney] and in other cases they occasionally make a fool of themselves [Vanessa Redgrave & Denis Glover, for example]).

I had never thought of Clint Eastwood as an artist, but maybe there is something artistic about point a gun at someone and saying, "Go ahead, make my day.". I guess that makes California's Governator an artist too. Michelangelo was a famous grouch who used his art to express his annoyance with others.

Oh, Cali's Governor is considered an artist indeed (at least in Europe, but do not ask me why, cause I am not much of a fan).

Well, the general idea is to tolerate their moods because they are like "gods" (since they have a special gift; as if we didn't) *nodding*. I know what I do when before a silly artist.

Interesting post and info he he he...Some new pieces of info for me about some of those you talked about there...but you're right...they're just humans like us, with weaknesses and strengths...challenges, temptations...

You know I think I told you that, your writing always have the twist, it starts with seriousness, and than BANG BANG lol, and its funny many times. You know what you said in the last paragraph is true, they are not any different than us, the only difference is that they are public figures now, and anything anyone will find about them, they will tell the world. I think that is the draw back of being famous.

My father is an artist (and yes, a full-time one!) and there is one thing I learned through the years : artists don't choose to be artists, they are just this way. :-D

Hi! Like you, I propose that an artist lives within all of us.
ReplyDeleteSome go on to great fame and fortune, while many of us plug away with the things that give us great enjoyment, without the need to be financially rewarded or recognised internationally.
But having said that, I'm sure those that went on to great fame and fortune, would have said the same thing when they first started.

Artists should be revered for they got the ability to make people connect through laughter, tears, fear and joy. However, it does not mean that their human idiosyncrasies are different from yours and mine.

Artists are exceptional beings, but when they get overwhelmed by their talent and they lack the capability of ego's management; the world is shaken with deplorable behaviour and suddenly we realise that they're just human beings like the rest of us.
