Genocide & Racism: Perverting Terms to Escape Criticism

Interior of the Mosque of El Ghoree - David Roberts

In the past decade, there has been an ever increasing number of organisations abusing certain terms. For example,  the words Genocide and Racism have been suffering abuse from many left-leaning groups and individuals.

Definition of Genocide

Article 6 of the Rome Statute of the ICC defines Genocide as follows:

“For the purpose of this Statute, 'genocide' means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

            (a)     Killing members of the group;

            (b)     Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

            (c)     Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its     physical destruction in whole or in part;

            (d)     Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

            (e)     Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. “

Such was the case in Nazi-occupied Europe, in Armenia (perpetrated by the Turkish) and in Rwanda. But it is disturbing to see how, today, many groups (in order to influence public opinion) try to apply this definition to specific scenarios in a very crass way.

For instance, it has been reported that evidence (collected through Facebook and YouTube, regarding the civil war in Syria) indicates "a genocide of Alawite, Christian, Kurdish and secular communities" – this is a problematic statement that points to an abuse of the definition of genocide; first of all, because the Alawite are known for being secular (i.e. they do not mix religion with politics; a reason why Assad-governed Syria was considered secular), Christians and Kurdish are usually secular; so why the need to add “secular communities”? To sensitise deist & nihilist westerners.

And second, if those reports, cited by Edwin Bakker (in his work), had simply indicated that what is going on in Syria is tantamount to Crimes Against Humanity (murder, extermination, enslavement, torture, rape or sexual slavery etc), it would've been more accurate; because let's be honest the Jihadist groups fighting in Syria are attacking any Syrian citizen who is not with, and for, them (especially Muslims).

They are going after the Alawite, the Christians and the non-religious individuals because they stand with Bashar al-Assad; they are going after the Kurds not only because they represent a hurdle to the establishment of the Islamic State, but also because in a way they assist the Syrian president in the battle against the rebels. Without minimising the atrocities committed by Al-Nusra and ISIS (to name a few), we must be able to recognise that the attacks perpetrated against the mentioned group of citizens were not genocidal (since they lacked intention to exterminate) but tactical (in order to weaken the president's support base and conquer territory).

Definition of Racism

“Prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. It often takes the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities. It may also hold that members of different races should be treated differently” (source: Wikipedia)

Racism is another word that has been widely abused by certain segments of society.
Nowadays, it's quite common to see certain Muslims trying to shun criticism of their practises by accusing others of being racist. The definition of religion is “a set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.” therefore it is quite obvious that it greatly differs from the definition of racism, thus certain movements/people should refrain from trying to insult our intelligence. Nevertheless, in their attempt to abuse our intellect, they expose an interesting angle:
If racism includes a belief system considering different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, and Islam (a belief system) regards Jews as being apes; who's the racist then?

Because we all know that Judaism lies within the category of Ethno-religious Groups; since being a Jew is much more than just professing a religion or stemming from a specific culture; in most cases it is actually a race (with DNA traits to prove it) despite the differences in the levels of melanin in many Jews' skin.

Both genocide and racism are extremely serious words, that should not be taken in vain. But when we start allowing certain people to misuse and abuse them, we not only incur the risk of rendering them banal but we mainly pave the path for those abusers to practise genocide and racism without meeting resistance or criticism.

  1. Muslims are also an ethnoreligious group so yes when you say something offensive it's racism of course!

    1. Hi Anon :D!

      "An ethnoreligious group is an ethnic group of people whose members are also unified by a common religious background. Ethnoreligious communities define their ethnic identity neither exclusively by ancestral heritage nor simply by religious affiliation, but often through a combination of both (a long shared history; a cultural tradition of its own; either a common geographical origin, or descent from a small number of common ancestors; a common language, not necessarily particular to the group; a common literature particular to the group; a common religion different from that of neighbouring groups; being a minority or being an oppressed or a dominant group within a larger community)

      Examples of ethnic groups defined by ancestral religions are the Jews, the Assyrians, the Armenians, the Druze, the Copts, the Yazidi, the Zoroastrians, the Huguenots, and the Serer" -- Wikipedia

      Are the Muslims an ethno-religious group? No, they're not.
      We have Arab Muslims, Persian Muslims, Asian Muslims, African Muslims, Latin American Muslims, Caucasian Muslims and now White European Muslims. The Arabs, Persians, Asians (according to their ethnicities), Africans (according to their ethnicities), Latin Americans (according to their ethnicities) and Caucasians are considered ethnicities with ancestral heritage, whereas Islam is a religious affiliation. Those people, stemming from different ethnicities, don't have a shared history, don't have a common cultural tradition, they certainly don't have a common geographical origin (obviously) and they don't have a common language (as many Muslim authors have stated, most don't even speak or understand Arabic). So no, they're not an ethno-religious group although they are trying to be one, by "magic".

      We don't have the right to offend any human being, period.

      Anon, thank you for your comment :D.

      Cheers

  2. Word play, does it matter if there's the intention to exterminate or not? The amount of people killed in Syria is genocidal, those poor women and children, who's going to pay for their suffering, huh? Muslims are a race, yes so who are you to say otherwise? On which authority?

    1. Olá, Celia!

      It's so nice to see that you are one of those who don't understand what you read. I suggest you go through the text once again and then come back with a comprehensive response.
      I can understand the Anonymous; for the likes of him are out there playing ignorants for propagandistic purposes.
      Hey, Celia, freedom of expression doesn't require any authority; get it?

    2. Hi Celia :D!

      I'd say that Lenny's advice is sound: go back to the article and actually read and comprehend it. If you have any doubts, please don't hesitate to ask for our help.
      I would also suggest that you read my response to Anonymous: you'll see it is quite enlightening as to why Muslims are not an ethno-religious group.

      Celia, thanks for dropping by :)

  4. Yeah, most Muslims try to be like Jews! And so now they accuse people who criticize of being racist, to match anti-Semitism; and everything that happens to Muslims in terms of war is genocide, to match the Holocaust. How pathetic of them!
    But at the same time, they call us apes and call for vehicle and knife jihad with the intent to exterminate us: draw your conclusions!

    2. Hi Ana Raquel :D!

      Most Muslims or most Muslims in political positions (including the Clergy)?
      You have a point; it is sad.
      They will never achieve it...

      Ana, thank you so much for your comment :D.

  5. Max, I'm glad you wrote about this cause it's exactly what we've been seeing more and more in the media, that pervert and manipulate these words with no shame whatsoever. And forget certain Muslims, how about non-Muslims being racist and then trying to make moral equivalences between Jews and Muslims? It's disgusting. Dunno, Max...but I'm glad you're here to shed some light on us all. Cheers for that.

      So true. That's important to note: indeed, non-Muslims do the same (they are usually left wingers, but it's not exclusive to them).
      You are being kind, thanks *bowing*.

      Michael, thank you so much for your comment, mate :D.

  6. Europe is delusional. No freakin' way that the Saudis would demand any progress in the Pali issue cause the day Iran shows the will to attack the Gulf nations, the Saudis would run to Israel with the same speed the devil runs away from the cross. This being said, the Europeans can stuff it!
    But Max, what's that agreement that Abbas rejected now all about? Could you explain, please? Wishing you all a fun weekend.

    1. Hi Carl :D!

      So true.
      Ah, you haven't heard? The West and Jordan, last September, reportedly proposed Abbas and his people to take over Gaza (with western assistance), deposing thus Hamas, so that there could be some stability in the region. However, Abbas rejected the "offer".

  7. Max, you are certainly right. I have been informed a few times that my very existence is an act of genocide due to my failure to embrace the modernist religion. Why should we let the concept of the death of a few million innocents go to waste when there are political points to be gained?
