A comment on two issues...

Une quéstion Musulmane (a Muslim issue) France has taken a few legislative steps concerning the Muslim customs, which have appalled a few people. For example, Muslim women are not allowed to wear headscarves in state schools; the government is searching for ways to ban the use of burkas (since it is understood that they “reduce dignity” and France “cannot accept to have (...) women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, prived of identity,”) and more recently a Muslim lady was prevented from swimming, in a public pool, in a burkini (image above) due to hygiene purposes (the pool prohibits the use of several kinds of swim wear). Some defend that it represents an attack to the Muslim culture; but I’d say it is a defence of the European culture and tradition. Bending the Protocol

...Yes, I know it is not politically correct to openly criticise the Islamic Fundamentalists (except when they bomb the western world)...however there is a thing or two I’d like to share...yes, sir...I understand...I will take it into consideration...thank you... I often watch the Doha Debates (on BBC World); because I am very much interested in knowing the opinion of the Muslim world on current issues. The show is well set up, the questions brought to the table are good...the TV programme endeavours to reveal how open the Muslim world, in the Middle East, is to debate and willing to critique itself. However, it seems to me that the conversations always converge to the same idea: trash the Western Life-Style. So far so good. I mean we know that we are not perfect, and we welcome criticism. However when the ones criticising us are those who benefit from our system and life-style; we can’t stop but wondering “Why don’t you go and live in the Muslim World, then?” The D

Political Indicators for 2015

Tethys the Spy - NASA 2014 ended with a bang when the UNSC rejected PA's unilateral move (to have a state ex nihilo recognised) – bravo. So, what can be expected this year? Some indicators point to the following:

The Lusosphere: East Timor

Timor derives from the Indonesian word Timur , meaning "east". Before the Portuguese arrived in Timor, there was already in the island a small population of hunters and farmers. There is documentation proving that this island maintained commercial ties with China (around the VII century) selling slaves, bee wax, sandalwood and noble wood (used to manufacture luxury furniture). 1512 : the Portuguese arrived in East Timor. For 4 centuries the Lusitanians only used the territory for commercial purposes (thus, exploiting the island's natural resources: sandalwood & coffee). Unlike they had done in the other colonies, the Portuguese never developed this island (for instance: only during the XX century, after the 60's, there was electricity, potable water, sewage systems, schools and hospitals in Díli [the capital of East Timor], all the rest of the nation remained undeveloped). August 1975 ( a year after the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 1974 )

Portuguese National Flag: borrowed from Here Just like in 1640 , on the 5th of June 2011 the Portuguese engaged in a life-changing political action: they restored Portugal - this time by ousting the Left and bringing the Right back to power. This time we have a Right Wing President and Government. It won’t be like in 2004 when the Socialist President, Jorge Sampaio, sabotaged our rightist administration by dissolving the parliament (in the midst of relevant reforms that could’ve prevented our present crisis) in a concerted political plot to put José Sócrates in power. I’d like to congratulate the 58.9% of the Portuguese Electorate for having fulfilled its electoral duty and for having respected the memory of those who fought for the right to vote. To the remaining 41.1% who were “too busy” to vote, I say: shame on you and you are a sham! You call yourself a national citizen, you benefit from the country’s welfare, you pretend to be patriotic and then spit on the memor

The Rare Interview of Angola's President: Frivolity or Fraudulence?

Flag of Angola On the 3rd of June, José Eduardo dos Santos (president of Angola) gave the first interview (in 22 years) to a Portuguese TV Network, SIC - if you speak the language, the interview is available here . The president demanded a specific journalist ( Henrique Cymerman ) and chose to "reveal" Angola's good relationship with Israel - at diplomatic, military and security levels. Henrique Cymerman looked like a marionette: his questions were shallow, his smiles were fake and, basically, he (a highly respected journalist) seemed to be making a fool of himself - it was like he was making sure he'd show the world he was forced to participate in that sham. Since most of Portugal doesn't even know about the relationship between Israel and Angola, why did President dos Santos feel the need to mention it? We can only assume he was sending a message to someone...but whom to? Whoever that person is; we are not sure the subliminal message sent by a corrosive
