It can't be easy being a parent. Before I commence, I'd like to pay my respects to all parents in the world: God bless you! I have always found it so cute when kids start saying what they want to be when they grow up (of course half of them end up by being something completely diverse of what they had initially planned): ballerina, fireman, police officer, doctor, singer etc. And parents always bear proud and shiny faces. Positive Discrimination...

…What the bloody hell does this mean? Last week, I heard some disturbing news: gypsy children are receiving their academic education in a container, separated from the other kids (who are being lectured in a recently refurbished school). This class is comprised of 6-16 years old children – all mixed together. This is happening in the Boa Negra primary school, in Barcelos (North of Portugal). The justification offered, by a governmental institution (that oversees educational matters), is that the school is executing a positive discrimination (plus, it is not a mere container, it is one with A/C: oh, that makes it all better, doesn’t it?). Discrimination : “The practice of treating one person or group of people less fairly or less well than other people or groups”. Love is a magical feeling: it brings light into the household of darkness; it bestows upon you happiness; it softens the hardest of hearts; it melts the iciest of beings and helps us to evolve. Love ignores the boundaries of age. However, society has managed, once again, to express its bigotry, lack of sensibility; poor judgment and, foment sexism even when it comes to feelings. Who the bloody hell decided that a lady (let's say, in her 40's or more) should not be involved with young men (for example, in their 20's or 30's)? Moreover, why are they labelled as cougars or pumas when they do so? We all know that whenever a lady falls in love with a younger man, people will either say "Oh, he's after her money" or "Oh, he's seeking for adventure with a more experienced woman" or even "What a waste! Remember Global Warming

Dear reader, I hope this epistle finds you in good spirits. When you hear about “global warming” what is your immediate thought? The environment, I assume. Today, however, I challenge you to go beyond that notion and dare, along with me, to behold other forms under which the globe is getting warmer. Remember, the temperature is getting higher in the Muslim World, causing successive tempests that surely will lead to a dramatic political-climate change. This is the case in countries like Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Syria (although still latently) and... Insha’Allah ...the future state of Palestine; where people are set to fight for Democracy (that is, free speech, the right to information, the right to assemble, multi-partisanship, free elections, access to the same opportunities for everyone, market liberalisation etc). It’s funny how people react to certain situations. I always say that humans are equal, that their similarities surpass their differences; however I must admit that the cultural factor affects pretty much the way people will respond to a particular event. Today I shall present 3 situations, 3 possible reactions to them by 3 cultures (African, Latin and Anglo-Saxon – for they are the ones I know best):
